Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Mississippi mud pie. That was a great pudding.

Agreeing totally with the veggie eating out comments. I do not want to eat vegan meat alternatives, it's all ultra processed with a huge fat content. My gall bladder is screaming within minutes of eating it. DH goes mad that I will have to check a menu very thoroughly before agreeing to eat out these days.

I miss good old vegetarian meals.

If you're nostalgic for old school food, this is the place to go: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d1016879-Reviews-Oslo_Court-London_England.html

My MIL invited us all there on her 70th birthday as the ironic ultimate old person restaurant, I don't think the menu or decor has changed since about 1987!

“…a la mode”, - meaning with ice cream.

You never see this on menus anymore, the terminology, not ice cream.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 10/09/2023 21:51

We eat a lot of cauliflower at home as a meat substitute but I would be raging if it were the only veggie option to me and I was faced with paying over £10 for a cauliflower ‘steak’ as I’ve seen on a few menus! At least old style veggie dishes had some substance to them.

Anniissa · 10/09/2023 21:54

Just been reading about a hot new restaurant that has a Knickerbocker Glory trolley and frequently see many of the dishes named here on menus in London (maybe less of the orange juice as starter or devilled eggs!).

Veal is also pretty common - as long as it’s Rose Veal, unless you eschew all dairy products, it is absolutely acceptable.

I've seen it on menus recently as Chicken Kyiv. 😄

Yes they have started calling them Kyiv on the packets too , Kiev Is the Russian name for the place so they changed it to the Ukrainian version.

It's still a popular term in America.

Oh and those DELICIOUS teddy bear ice cream wafers which had two teddies - a boy and a girl - and snapped in half. Very popular on children's puddings in the 90s.

They still serve them in the kids ice cream in my local pub

The dessert trolly!

I remember going to family special dinners in a local hotel and the dessert trolly at the end was always exciting.

Treacle lattice tart, spotted dick, Black Forest or strawberry gateaux, death by chocolate, banoffee pie and sherry trifle

Makes me think of Victoria Wood “Is it on the trolley?”

Melon in a fan shape with a few tinned strawberries.
Chicken or scampi in a basket
Black Forest gateau (just the word gateau instead of cake)

I still like cubed cheese and silver skin onions on cocktail sticks.
My Mum was partial to vol-au-vents on special occasions.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 10/09/2023 22:00

I feel like this thread should be able to access a database of restaurant menus. I reckon I can still order 80% of the things posted on it in my local area!

Ironically, I googled it and the only recipe that came up was Mumsnet.

Jamie Oliver has a version. www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/lamb-recipes/spiced-shepherd-s-pie/

You'll probably find more if you Google spiced Shepherd's pie.

I have the Mumsnet recipe. I will definitely do it this autumn. I might call it spiced shepherds pie though,

Eton mess is one of the dessert options at the Cosmo's chain buffet restaurants.I have it every time we go

Salmon mousse molded into the shape of a salmon with cucumber slices for scales

Chicken Cordon Bleu

Parfaits

Goulash

Chocolate Barbarian (Bavarian)

Chocolate Mousse

Cheese balls

Oh, and anything in aspic and tripe can rot in hell where they belong.

villanova · 10/09/2023 22:11

Tutti frutti ice cream (all the candied dried fruit from a panettone)
Neopolitan ice cream (though that was mainly in cardboard wrappers from the supermarket)
broccoli & stilton soup
omelettes in restaurants

Profiteroles, I feel like I hardly ever see them on menus now and they’re my favourite. Now just have to buy them from Tesco, definitely not the same.

They are easy to make, it has been a while since I did it but I was surprised how straightforward it was, you don't even need a piping bag for the choux pastry or the whipped cream. You can dollop the pastry on the baking sheet with a spoon and when they are cooked and cool, you just slice an opening in them and shove a bit of whipped cream in. Pile on a plate and drizzle with melted chocolate, I am sure there will be plenty of online info and videos.

Vegetarian meals are getting harder to find in restaurants now. Mostly vegan substitutes and it's simply just not the same.

Vegans (3% of UK population) have somehow trumped Vegetarians (10%) of UK population. It’s ultimately laziness on restaurants parts: we’ve been conflated somehow?

TranquilWater · 10/09/2023 22:17

More of a cafe menu item than a restaurant dish, but bacon and avocado sandwiches were popular in the 90s, never see them anymore.

Otterock · 10/09/2023 22:20

Scampi
butterscotch tart
Mississippi mud pie
gateaux

I remember trying Black Forest gateaux at my dm's wedding. I thought I'd gone to heaven!

I'd forgotten about that, I now really, really want some, It is in my head and I need to find it and trough it down

red onion and goats cheese tart.

cos of the ditching of veggie classics for new fangled vegan dishes.

Yum!

MehtotheChristmasrunup · 10/09/2023 22:27

@Lifeomars Yep I make profiteroles/choux buns all the time as they require much less butter and egg than normal biscuits, pastry or cakes.

I remember every meal out in my youth being garlic mushrooms on toast, trout or steak and Mississippi / Alabama mud pie.

@Mrsjayy ploughman's? You want The Harrow. Proper chunk of bread, chunk of butterm lettuce, tomato, homemade pickle , and a choice of cheese or meat. They are proper old school though..cash only, kids not welcome inside.

Lemon Meringue Pie!

I loved that when I was little, apparently I used to call it "lemon anger pie"

plasticinevitable · 10/09/2023 22:32

Pubs where I live (semi-rural north) still serve prawn cocktail and pate.

However we don't see garlic mushrooms, scampi, black forest gateau, zabaglione, spinach and ricotta cannelloni, or tiramisu as much! All late 90s/early 00s staples, and even then they were dated. Such a shame as I bloody love tiramisu as well.

A lemon filled with lemon sorbet

Never heard of this before but it sounds gorgeous.
