Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

apple and banana fritters ( not together) as dessert in Chinese restaurants probably the only batter dish I really liked

Flyinggeesei234 · 10/09/2023 23:15

Thank you @Cookerhood

I once had , well a few times had, chicken supreme, when camping with school years ago.
I can’t remember if it was out of a giant catering tin, or packets, but it was served on rice, and I loved it. We didn’t have anything like it at home, as my mother was a very plain (awful) cook

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 10/09/2023 23:20

I’m here to say that a prawn cocktail starter is not a prawn cocktails starter if it doesn’t come with a couple of triangles of buttered brown bread.

Does everyone know that Morrisons bakery do a black forest gateaux that is lovely? Rich chocolate sponge, cherry jam and cream. It's in the chilled section by the bakery

Sorry if it's been mentioned

The chocolate cherry muffins are amazing as well

Unsalted caramel.
As a sauce, in a dessert, as an ice cream flavour, whatever but without salt.

Auntpodder · 10/09/2023 23:38

Haven't RTFT but the Wolseley has a fab banana split on its menu...

Oioicaptain · 10/09/2023 23:43

Also a mixed grill!
I used to love Bernie's cocktails for children. Always so exciting. Curly straw, umbrella and a plastic animal perched on the side of the glass.

Items that you no longer see on menus.

If you're nostalgic for old school food, this is the place to go: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d1016879-Reviews-Oslo_Court-London_England.html

My MIL invited us all there on her 70th birthday as the ironic ultimate old person restaurant, I don't think the menu or decor has changed since about 1987!

I was going to say Oslo Court, it's amazing. Also Rules

oh yes, I miss plain old caramel.

sometimes salted caramel can be nice, but more often than not it manages to be overly sweet as well as acrid.

Prawn cocktail

One of Gordon Ramseys' chains has prawn cocktail on the menu.
I enjoyed it.

justasking111 · 10/09/2023 23:47

Here our tourists are mostly from the North so most of these dishes are available. We're big on fish being coastal so fish and chips is very popular and scampi, whitebait. As for vegans many kitchens here have decided there's no bloody pleasing them anyway. So it's vegetarian with vegan or real cheese. Vegetarian guests being politer.

Eton mess popular, ditto cheeseboard food, ploughman's I see as sharing platters.

YupIKnow · 10/09/2023 23:47

Many restaurants have prawn cocktails. I love them. I also love chicken Kiev and eat weekly😂

Oioicaptain · 10/09/2023 23:48

@Pushmepullu

Hazelnut yogurts. Now there's a blast from the past.
Also ice magic!
And hedgehog flavoured crisps. And curry crisps.

Oioicaptain · 10/09/2023 23:50

Also the desserts trolley! They used to wheel it round to each table!

Wincarnis · 10/09/2023 22:58

Pizzaland platter - half a baked potato, coleslaw and pizza slices!

monkey gland steak

chicken a la king

Ploughman’s Lunch

Yes to this! Although my recollection is a full spud. I even remember the way they arranged it - long oval plate, 2 half pizzas at each side, spud and coleslaw in the centre and a wee packet of butter.

And the salad bar seemed so posh.

rinseandrepeat1 · 10/09/2023 18:47

There's no wrongly about it. Foie gras is horrific.

My vote is for knickerbocker glory. And I remember those teddy bear wafers too!

I agree. Inflicting such pain on animals for a non-essential pleasure (and this goes for all including battery farming and other practices) isn’t acceptable

Oioicaptain · 10/09/2023 23:54

Chicken cordon bleu. If you were feeling fancy!

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/09/2023 00:05

I remember the dessert trolley but looking back it makes you wonder how long the desserts had been sitting there.

Loved Garfunkels in the 80s, we used to go to the Golders Green one, great burgers.

I miss proper chicken Kiev too, if anyone is familiar with Hungerford there used to be a great little restaurant (near the bridge and river I think) where they served chicken Kiev chips and peas.

I also miss Wimpy especially their brown derby - doughnut with ice cream and chocolate sauce.
