Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

I used to love Black Forest gateau but you don’t see it anymore. My bil and sil had it at their wedding last year and it was fantastic!

AffIt · 10/09/2023 17:55

Half an avocado filled with prawns Marie Rose, which I remember finding incredibly exciting and exotic as a child in the mid-80s.

Those puddings that were like an inverted trifle. They came in all sorts of flavours and were delicious!

A while of Googling tells me it's a Charlotte Russe

Prawn cocktail

Prawn cocktail

A pub near me has one on its menu. Naturally it's not called a Prawn Cocktail but that is in fact what it is.

Knickerbocker glory

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/09/2023 17:59

I really miss Bombay duck in Indian restaurants. I'm sure I read somewhere that it had been banned...

BakedTattie · 10/09/2023 18:00

Banana split

DeathAndParsnips · 10/09/2023 18:00

I loved Knickerbocker glories and prawn cocktails. I still buy prawn cocktails.

I'm adding banana splits to the list. I still love those.

Egg Mayonnaise as a starter. Friend had it at her wedding in the late 90s and it was retro then. With a wee sprinkle of paprika.

froomeonthebroom · 10/09/2023 18:02

Loaded potato skins 😋

Loaded potato skins 😋

Those on a Berni Inn or Harvester sharing platter to start - onion rings, garlic mushrooms, loaded (crispy) potato skins, and chicken wings.

A lemon filled with lemon sorbet

You need to come to the algarve. You can get all of the above there all year round. I had a banana split just last night and it had a sparkler as well 🤗

We've often had those in Spain & they sell them in Costco (or certainly did about 5 years ago).
Love a prawn cocktail. I buy them from the supermarket & put them in half an avocado.

HeDoesntWannaBangYouSomebodyHangYou · 10/09/2023 18:07

Aw my late Mum used to do this as a starter when she had a dinner party, early-late 90s. We thought it was the height of sophistication as kids 🤣Properly arranged with a fancy salad bed 🤣

Frodedendron · 10/09/2023 18:09

And tomato juice as a starter.

Came on to say egg mayo with paprika as a starter. I used to waitress at a masonic lodge in the mids 00s and it was often on the menu. I used to love eating any extras

Also love a black forest gateau and melon and Parma ham. Whitebait as a starter too

red onion and goats cheese tart.

cos of the ditching of veggie classics for new fangled vegan dishes.

AnotherCountryMummy · 10/09/2023 18:13

Melon wrapped in parma ham.

Coconut ice cream in a coconut shell 🥥 Although Lidl had some of these in a few years ago and I absolutely maxed out on them.
