Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Veal. For obvious reasons, and it's quite correct that it's not considered an acceptable dish any more. It didn't half taste nice though.

gogomoto · 10/09/2023 18:57

Most of these are still available. I've seen prawn cocktail, avocado and prawns, loaded potato skins, melon starters and Black Forest gateaux recently mostly when I was in Yorkshire. Around here you can get potato skins on a platter, think it was tgi Fridays or somewhere similar near the cinema

I had chicken in a basket recently.. Bizarrely, I think it was at The Alchemist.

I really miss melon as a starter. I might do it at Christmas. It's a regular craving of mine anyway.

DH and I went to a traditional hotel in Scarborough for our silver anniversary the other week. One of the starter options was grapefruit. I felt I had to ask whether apple or orange juice to drink was an either/or option as one of the starters, like the 70s. 😅 Thankfully it was, the grapefruit, and our veggie cooked breakfast was lovely. 🙂

T bone steak!

@AnotherCountryMummy

Lidl had the coconut ice cream in shells a few weeks ago, it's part of their Asia range. Their range is advertised a week or so ahead

Old style proper puddings like Apple Pie, Bramble Pie and Apple crumble with plain old vanilla ice cream or pouring cream.

Everything is messed about with now and turned into weird modern versions like 'Toffee Apple Crumble with salted caramel sauce' bleugh.

Potato croquettes. Used to love them as a child.

Still on the menu in my house, Asda sell them. They don't taste quite as good as back in the 80's.

Birds Eye potato fritters are sadly missed.

ThreeRingCircus · 10/09/2023 19:01

It's many years since I've seen a suet pudding on a menu.

Death by Chocolate. Was always on the menu in the late 80s/early 90s when I used to waitress in the local pub.

Oh God you made me have a little nostalgia cry for some reason. Reminding me of my youth!

MissAmbrosia · 10/09/2023 19:02

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Scampi! This was the height of sophistication when I was young. Along with viennetta

WellThisIsFun1 · 10/09/2023 19:02

Chicken Kiev.

A taste of 1985

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2023 19:02

Crepes Suzette

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 10/09/2023 19:03

There’s a hotel in Jersey that still does a glass of orange juice as a starter option.

For anyone wanting recipes for some of these dishes, The Prawn Cocktail years is a fabulous cookbook, including an excellent Black Forest gateau.

I miss Mississippi Mud Pie. Dreadful for you and as synthetic as Death by Chocolate, but I loved it.

purplecorkheart · 10/09/2023 19:03

An mixed grill used to be a minute steak, a sausage, a slice of gammon, some chicken, chips, grilled tomato and some pineapple and Chips in my local town. Seemed to vary around Ireland but always similar

Seychal · 10/09/2023 19:03

Welsh Rarebit. Not only as a starter but as an alternative 'pudding' for those who do not like sweet dishes.

Pasithean · 10/09/2023 19:04

Steak Diane.

BasilParsley · 10/09/2023 19:04

Anything flambeed at the table and dished up within minutes... Particularly crepe suzette, certain steak offerings with maybe a whisky based cream sauce and peaches in a wickedly alcoholic and lush sauce...

Loads of pubs round here do scampi.

We used to go out for Sunday lunch and the dessert was a choice of Peach Melba or Pear Helene. It seemed really sophisticated at the time.

VikingsandDragons · 10/09/2023 19:06

Banoffee pie.

You can get the half coconut filled with coconut ice cream, the lemon filled with lemon sorbet and the orange filled with orange sorbet at chester zoo, at the little stand next to where you get the boat ride and they are fantastic :D

12moose · 10/09/2023 19:06

Melon is still a popular starter in Italy, with ham

I've seen it on menus recently as Chicken Kyiv. 😄

I had a ploughman's a few weeks ago it was so disappointing and not how they used to be, and I was starving after eating it.

We would have Ploughman’s for lunch. They’d give you thick wedges of cheese and lovely crusty French bread and butter. Served with a cold white wine. We thought we were so sophisticated.

Some people would go back to work wasted! And our boss didn’t mind. Those were the days!

I really miss Bombay duck in Indian restaurants. I'm sure I read somewhere that it had been banned...

Not so much banned, but it's very smelly when being cooked & some clients don't like the smell of fish..
