Items that you no longer see on menus.

Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Tournedos Rossini, DP’s all-time favourite dish.

The reason it has disappeared is that, rightly or wrongly, foie gras is no longer considered an acceptable thing to eat. It could be replaced by ethically reared calves’ liver, I suppose. Wouldn’t be quite the same, though.

Omg @Pushkinini did we work together 🤣

I want to have so many of these now.

Organ meat like liver and kidney. Very unusual to see a steak and kidney pie on a menu now, although I do suspect that it's still included in many of the steak and onion/ale/etc pies in a covert fashion.

Very different to France where there's organ meat of some sort on most menus!

Chicken in a basket

I had chicken in a basket recently.. Bizarrely, I think it was at The Alchemist.

I really miss melon as a starter. I might do it at Christmas. It's a regular craving of mine anyway.

A lemon filled with lemon sorbet

They had these in Lidl a while back!

Oh and those DELICIOUS teddy bear ice cream wafers which had two teddies - a boy and a girl - and snapped in half. Very popular on children's puddings in the 90s.

You can get them in Asda!

AperolWhore · 10/09/2023 18:45

Baked Alaska! I used to want this on my birthday every year!

Frech Onion Soup topped with a big piece of bread with melted cheese on it. They even used to come in specific bowls with a handle on one side, unlike other soups.

It's on the menu at Cote!

Black Forest gateaux? I'm on skyscanner already ✈️

THe local bakery does this, but their red velvet is even better. It melts on your mouth and has to be the best ever cake I have eaten. And I have eaten quite a few ... 🤓

Always remember that Fawlty Towers bit, think it was the "Gourmet Night" episode. The starter menu had Grapefruit Cherry (half a grapefruit with a cherry on top) and Grapefruit Orange (ditto, with bit of orange instead of cherry) and Grapefruit Surprise. A guest asks Basil what's Grapefruit Surprise? and he replies that's the half grapefruit with, er...... nothing on top.

It was duck, not grapefruit - duck with cherries, duck with orange, and duck surprise. Because he could only get duck from the restaurant he ended up having to go to when the chef got too drunk to cook.

My contribution is trifle - it does still pop up occasionally but not as often as it should!

Coquille St Jacques. Can’t think why you never see it - it’s delish.

They often have these as a starter on the Valentines Dine Inn at Marks, I always stock up!

There's no wrongly about it. Foie gras is horrific.

My vote is for knickerbocker glory. And I remember those teddy bear wafers too!

Our local restaurant in Porches (Algarve) does the most delicious Liver and Onion on a Thursday - olives, bread, butter, salad, main course, desert, drink (wine, beer or soft drink) and coffee. All for the princely sum of 12.50 euros (about £10 ... Honestly - most of what is on this thread we have here (plus lots of other food as well, of course!)

I had a ploughman's a few weeks ago it was so disappointing and not how they used to be, and I was starving after eating it.

I used to love Black Forest gateau but you don’t see it anymore. My bil and sil had it at their wedding last year and it was fantastic!

Oh yes, I remember having it at an inn in Haworth in the late 80s. It was bloody glorious, a big slice served with a generous serving of double cream. I've never forgotten it. 😋

Veggie risotto - used to be the standard veggie dish on a menu!

But agree with previous posters that most options are vegan these days and sometimes I just want something nice with cheese or cream!

I've noticed lately that the trend seems to be the vegetarian option can be made vegan. Like, a veggie burger with cheese and mayo but made vegan with fake cheese and vegan mayo. I'd quite like that to continue. I'm not vegetarian anymore but sometimes want the vegetarian option, but rarely the vegan option. My pet hate is the vegan option also being the gluten free option. It's invariably bland and has a strange texture.

I miss a nice meat and potato pie. There's often a pie option but I can't remember the last time I saw meat and potato.

NoTeaNoShade · 10/09/2023 18:53

Anyone have a good recipe for Black Forest Gateau? Fancy trying to make one 😋

ThreeRingCircus · 10/09/2023 18:54

Vegetarian meals that don't include vegan substitutes. My MIL wanted the veggie burger but regular cheese (because vegan cheese has the texture of rubber and tastes like 2 day old vomit) and the restaurant wouldn't do it!!!

I completely agree with this. Also, when I want a veggie burger I want the ones made of actual vegetables. Or a bean burger.....not some horrible fake meat thing.

I used to love the orange sorbets in an orange skin and it's many years since I've seen Black Forest Gateau (not sure why because it's amazing!)

Lurleene · 10/09/2023 18:54

We used to go out to eat on special occasions when I was a child, it would have been unthinkable at any other time.

My absolute favourite treat was a simple side dish of sautéed potatoes, I don't think I've ever seen them on the menu as an adult.

Oh god yeah! Used to live near one pub where it was a sort of speciality, loads of cheeses etc to choose from. Don't think it's there any more.
