What dumb thing has taken you forever to realise?

Nights in white satin song was playing in the car today. A favourite song of mine so I was singing along and it dawned on me that the word is "nights," not "knights".

Whole song makes much more sense now 😳

I had a similar issue with "Toyota, the car in front" but it's a Nissan I'm behind (or other car brand).

And in the film Winnie the Pooh where the gopher says "I'm not in the book" and I thought it was the phone book😬 for decades!

I promise I'm intelligent.

The way Clarks is written, I thought it was 'Clanks' as a young child. Also I didn't realise it was Linkedin. I thought the second I was an L. Weird, I know!

I always thought the lyrics to “Celebration” were “celebration time, come on”. So recently I was wandering around the house singing along to it doing a few jobs and my 8 year old stopped what she was doing and said “Actually, it’s “celebrate good times, not celebration time”.

I had to have a look and she was right 😂

I know, it totally did say Clanks!

House of fun by madness

Only found out a few weeks ago this is a song about a 16 year old boy's 'coming of age' and he's going in to buy some condoms from chemist then visit the local brothel

Please someone tell me I'm not the only person who didn't know this lol. I'm mid 50s!

It’s about the chemist and their misunderstanding, he isn’t going to a brothel though.

What! No! But I always thought they were alluding to boobs when talking about “party hats with their coloured tips”

BMW6 · 09/01/2025 19:47

No, they're singing about condoms "a pack of party hats with a feather light tip" ......

How on earth do you think it's referring to boobs???? 😂

PurpleChrayn · 09/01/2025 20:14

It took me years to realise that the expression "letting the side down" refers to the team. I always envisaged someone trying to hold up the side of a huge box but finally letting go of it.

IjustbelieveinMe · 09/01/2025 20:49

I always thought it was about a fairground! Never actually took notice of the lyrics! Just did the funny dance and sang the chorus!

Just asked DH what he thought Nights in White Satin meant. He also had visions of a guy in chain mail with a white tabard, on a horse 🤣🤣🤣

Erm. Same.

That Amazon and the little arrow brand picture is marking the points A to Z in the name ie it sells everything in the alphabet and wasn't just an arrow signifying delivery.

That I can be a good teacher and not ruin my own life at the same time.

That thunder is the SOUND of lightning and not an entirely separate phenomena. My flabber is truly gasted in an embarrassed kind of a way.

Same. I only found out differently a year or so ago.

I had a really blind spot when it came to the word 'miniseries' wondering what on earth it meant as my head was hearing it rhyming with 'miseries'. When the penny dropped that it was mini-series it suddenly made so much more sense. Honestly, it took me years to figure that out.

HorsePlatitudes · 11/01/2025 08:20

@charabang I do that too, and actually it puts me off anything described that way. need the hyphen!

Not to mention 'Ive got you under my skin(cocaine), and Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds😂😂

Sorry, that's wrong. Nothing to do with cocaine.
Besides, most people in the era the song was written, snorted it, rather than injected it!

Not me; but my friend kept asking why don’t private ambulance’s windows in them we all laughed at her & thought she was going potty but then I was driving her to hospital one day & she said look a bloody private ambulance it has no windows; I roared with laughter so much tears were streaming down my face; I had to explain to her it was an undertakers van that collects the dead bodies & that no patients in there would be worried about the view on their journey; she was mortified that she had never known about it when we met friends later I was in stitches S she tried to explain it to them 😂

But... labelling it as an 'ambulance' is almost oxymoronic, because for most of us, an ambulance is used for an emergency or for transporting sick/injured people.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 11/01/2025 09:04

Anyone else see "shopfitting" on a van and read it as "shoplifting"? My brain starts wondering why they are advertising this then the penny drops.

Song lyric wise, I only recently found out it’s not ‘my love has got no money, he’s got his trombolese’, which I blindly accepted without ever questioning wtf a trombolese is.

It’s actually ‘he’s got his strong beliefs’.

IS IT? I thought a trombolese was an instrument of some sort 😅

SM4713 · 26/08/2023 21:10

I just found this out out from reading your post! I too thought it was trombolese all these years later!😳

Me too! I accepted it without question but had I been asked I would have suggested it was some sort of variation on a trombone. Mind blown!
