What dumb thing has taken you forever to realise?

Nights in white satin song was playing in the car today. A favourite song of mine so I was singing along and it dawned on me that the word is "nights," not "knights".

Whole song makes much more sense now 😳

I had a similar issue with "Toyota, the car in front" but it's a Nissan I'm behind (or other car brand).

And in the film Winnie the Pooh where the gopher says "I'm not in the book" and I thought it was the phone book😬 for decades!

I promise I'm intelligent.

And don't forget about "Relax". I remember it suddenly getting banned (presumably someone actually listened to the lyrics)

Not to mention 'Ive got you under my skin(cocaine), and Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds😂😂

Greenly7 · 06/09/2023 19:15

Thanks for the 3… post helps a lot 🙈

Sorry but the song "I've got you under my skin" by Cole Porter has nothing to do with drugs.

If you contend that it does, please quote yor source! The lyrics don't support your contention at all!

Golden Brown though is 100% about heroin. The lyrics make perfect sense.

There's a song on the Frankie album called Krisco Kisses. I was in my 40s before I twigged what that was about, all I'm going to say is Relax is like the Teddy Bears' Picnic in comparison!

Why, oh why, did i Google that... 🥴

GR8GAL · 07/09/2023 10:00

That Tayto crisps were named after po-tatoes. Decades old before I realised this 😅

Atsocta · 07/09/2023 14:51

That I’m an idiot who hasn’t learnt 🤦‍♀️

If memory serves me correctly, that ban was initiated by DJ Mike Read on Radio 1.

I don't want to tell you how old I was before I discovered a 'black comedy' didn't mean the Cosby show, the Fresh prince of Bel Air or Sister sister.

Thatsmorethanhalf · 15/09/2023 15:06

You can email yourself

Twotwinpeaks · 15/09/2023 15:46

As a child I used to ask my Mum why these large houses, with signs out the front, were ‘Free.’ Whereas others with signs outside said ‘For Sale.’

What was the criteria between free houses verses once ones people had to pay for? I quite liked the idea of the free house.

Free Houses were of course, the pubs!

Hydrangeasneedtrimming · 15/09/2023 20:10

🙂

cariadlet · 16/09/2023 06:51

I knew you could email yourself but I have just WhatsApped myself to see if it works.
I had no idea that you could do that. 🤦‍♀️

Jennifer Lopez was singing "Amstel Amstel" to me in Jenny from the Block.

It was the first beer served in England I learnt about. That's awkward.

Another dumb thing is it took me ages how two faced people can be. That's a bit bitter but I mean it genuinely.

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 19/09/2023 00:42

It took me far longer than it should have done to catch on that ‘Henri’ in the brand Henri Lloyd was Welsh and not French - thank goodness I never needed to mention it out loud. 😳😅

TromboleseFan · 05/11/2023 08:37

...and yet 'Trombolese' has made it into the urban dictionary!

Scullface · 13/01/2024 22:53

For years I thought the lyrics were “sitting on the dark coloured bay…” 😳😳😳

How?

SusieLawson · 14/01/2024 23:21

I always pronounced chimney as chimley as a child and nobody corrected me, so was confused when I saw the proper spelling and it didn't have an L in it.
Also as a child I didn't know the word werenit wasn't a real word. As in 'it was like that werenit.

AInightingale · 15/01/2024 10:05

I was thrown by the spelling of 'pneumonia' as a child when I read it in books, and the ailment that my granny was always talking about called 'knew-moan-ee-aa', which sounded terrifying tbh. Until I was about 11 I thought they were two distinct conditions. 🤦

Diplidocus4 · 15/01/2024 10:17

Sheep in a field .
The colours on their backs I thought were farmers ID , certain ones with certain colours etc .
Wondered one day about the ram I could see with a rope / harness type thing .

The ram wears the marker to colour the back of ewes he's mated with .

Took many many years to know that .

i was forty before I realised that!

When we were driving along the country roads as kids and asking about the 'pink sheep and green sheep', my dad always said it was to distinguish the 'different farmers' flocks of sheep'. He was from a rural background himself and I'm sure he knew rightly, but he was hardly going to tell us the real reason!

If you click on the three horizontal dots at the top right hand side of any post a menu pops up. Just click on 'Quote' at the top of the menu and voila, you'll quote the PP. 😎

Thank you - I’ve wondered how to do this for months!
