What dumb thing has taken you forever to realise?

Nights in white satin song was playing in the car today. A favourite song of mine so I was singing along and it dawned on me that the word is "nights," not "knights".

Whole song makes much more sense now 😳

I had a similar issue with "Toyota, the car in front" but it's a Nissan I'm behind (or other car brand).

And in the film Winnie the Pooh where the gopher says "I'm not in the book" and I thought it was the phone book😬 for decades!

I promise I'm intelligent.

That those fluffy things you see in fields next to dandelions are actually dandelions in their final phase. I knew they were connected in some way but didn’t think they were the same thing.

I always read "epitome" as "ep-ih-tomb" and it was only a couple of yrs ago the penny dropped and I realised it's "eh-pih-toe-me" 🤣 I say the word fairly often too but I'd never written it before when I realised.

allthehops · 26/08/2023 19:52

Bloody hell. All these years I've been imagining actual knights, on horseback, dressed in white satin robes 😂😂😂

ISeeARedDoorAndIWantToBreakIn · 26/08/2023 19:55

Last week I found out why the Dark Ages were called the Dark Ages. Apparently it’s nothing to do with the sun disappearing in some kind of nuclear winter. My face was red!

I was about 35 when I realised the wombles were from Wimbledon Common, not that they were from Wimbledon and were common.

LittleGreyGoose · 26/08/2023 20:00

In my head I had always imaged the Elgin Marbles to be big and round like oversized actual marbles. And I have a degree in history.

GeorgeSpeaks · 26/08/2023 20:01

Flo Rida is actually the name of a state of the United States if America. I didn't see his name written down for ages so I didn't clock this!

Mr Saxobeat is not, in fact, Mr Sexomeat 😳

MWB29 · 26/08/2023 20:04

When I used to drive past security vans that had ‘POLICE FOLLOW THIS VAN’ written on the back I thought it was a command for any passing police cars to start following the van 😂 I was 28 when I realised it was a warning to possible robbers!

This!
I feel quite stupid now

Lifeisgood1 · 26/08/2023 20:06

I used to think the song 'everytime you go away, you take a piece of me with you' was actually take a piece of meat with you! 😂 could never understand why they took meat with them!

Oh my god, I have forever looked at those vans, thinking that is a hopelessly ambiguous instruction, Police follow this van, rather than police! Follow this van! makes so much more sense. Thank you!

MWB29 · 26/08/2023 20:11

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this!

Tripolitripodder · 26/08/2023 20:12

Not me but my friend this one.She kept saying to us,how come this person gets so many letters sent in to problem pages, has so many issues etc.The person she was referring to was Anon.Hahahaha we fell over laughing as we told her it was Anon for Anonymous not a person called Anon with a fetish for writing to problem pages etc.

Lilithlogic · 26/08/2023 20:13

That several doesn't mean seven. Makes total sense to me.

SM4713 · 26/08/2023 20:14

I moved to the UK in my mid 20's. It took me ages to realise that the term 'poorly' didn't mean they couldn't afford things!

KrazyboutKillian · 26/08/2023 20:29

@LittleGreyGoose
me too !
i imagined marbles

Monopoly. Mono (one) + poly (many). One person owning many things.

Mind. Blown.

I would always think, but what if the police are already in the middle of something!

OK, I thought that too until I saw your post 😳
But also, if so many of us didn't get it, why would potential robbers?! Poor communication skills I say...

Song lyric wise, I only recently found out it’s not ‘my love has got no money, he’s got his trombolese’, which I blindly accepted without ever questioning wtf a trombolese is.

It’s actually ‘he’s got his strong beliefs’.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 26/08/2023 21:00

Isn't the "police follow this van" mean that the drivers will not pull over for the police due to the risk of thieves pretending to be police. Drivers instructed to drive to the nearest police station?

stargirl1701 · 26/08/2023 21:01

Dogs are way easier than DC.

ThewaytoAmarula · 26/08/2023 21:02

In the Amazon logo there is an arrow pointing from the letter A towards the Z. I always just thought it was a fairly crap logo with a curved line underneath the name.
