Nights in white satin song was playing in the car today. A favourite song of mine so I was singing along and it dawned on me that the word is "nights," not "knights".

Whole song makes much more sense now 😳

I had a similar issue with "Toyota, the car in front" but it's a Nissan I'm behind (or other car brand).

And in the film Winnie the Pooh where the gopher says "I'm not in the book" and I thought it was the phone book😬 for decades!

I promise I'm intelligent.

Song lyric wise, I only recently found out it’s not ‘my love has got no money, he’s got his trombolese’, which I blindly accepted without ever questioning wtf a trombolese is.

It’s actually ‘he’s got his strong beliefs’.

I just found this out out from reading your post! I too thought it was trombolese all these years later!😳

@muchalover I still don't think I understand the Toyota one....what does it mean, please?

Isn't the "police follow this van" mean that the drivers will not pull over for the police due to the risk of thieves pretending to be police. Drivers instructed to drive to the nearest police station?

I still don't get this either.

It means the car ahead. Ahead of the rest.

Louisetopaz21 · 26/08/2023 21:16

My dh thought the lyrics were Maxwell Jump instead of might as well Jump. We sing DH's version much better. I only learnt ducks fly I thought they bimbled to the ponds. Africa is a continent and not a country, mind blowing xx

When I used to drive past security vans that had ‘POLICE FOLLOW THIS VAN’ written on the back I thought it was a command for any passing police cars to start following the van 😂 I was 28 when I realised it was a warning to possible robbers!

Must admit i thought the same as you on that one.

DavesSpareDeckChair · 26/08/2023 21:18

The first I ever heard of that Moody Blues song was when I saw a cartoon depicting knights in white satin, well before I heard the song itself, so for years I was a bit confused about whether the song was about knights or nights.

I think it's ment to read that police follow this van, as in it's got a tracker on it linked to the police and security company

I was about 35 when I realised the wombles were from Wimbledon Common, not that they were from Wimbledon and were common.

I also thought that, unti I grew up, moved to London and discovered there was a place called Wimbledon common 😂

That the instructions at the start of the rounds (except the technical) in Great British Bake Off are purely for the benefit of the audience. The contestants already know the requirements, they have used that information to create their recipes. It took me WAY too long to cotton on.

I only realised recently that thunder and lightning weren't two completely separate things. I didn't know that the thunder was the noise of the lightning. I haven't confessed that to anyone. Until now Blush

I also thought it was trombolese (must be the most commonly misheard lyric of the 90s) and thought that maybe it meant he got his trombone on a lease (as he's got no money, so he can't afford to buy it outright!).

I had a like a joke book thing as a kid that had the phrase “many hands make light work” and there was a cartoon picture of loads of people up a stepladder changing a light bulb.

I just assumed that the saying was about light and it wasn’t until my early twenties that I realised it meant light as in easy!

Kids take things so literally don’t they!

"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille
With 5 hundred children, and a crop in the field"

Eventually I realised it was 5 hungry children...

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who just accepted ‘trombolese’ as a thing 😂

Bloody hell. All these years I've been imagining actual knights, on horseback, dressed in white satin robes 😂😂😂

Oh wow. Years and years of misunderstanding. Is it because we were small children when we first heard the song?! Blush

In school I learned that rivers started in mountains and flowed down to the sea. Either from snow melt or from springs, which bubbled vigorously up in the mountains somewhere.

In my late 40's I discovered that some rivers ere made by quietly welling up from underneath the ground, when groundwater is close to the surface.
It actually blew my mind!

Ladysamantha · 26/08/2023 21:26

I always heard it as "drum police" not trombolese

At first glance I'm thinking I didn't know this but I must have done because as kids we would count the seconds between the lightning and thunder and that told you how many miles away the storm was!

letmesailletmesail · 26/08/2023 21:27

I have known for years that it is daylight 24 hours a day in the far north. It didn't occur to me until this summer (and I'm in my late 40s) that that meant it would be continuous daylight for days and days on end. Until then, to the extent I'd thought about it, I thought it would be daylight overnight for one day and would then go straight back to being dark for at least a few hours the next night.
