That World Cup kiss

The news about the world cup is being dominated by an unsolicited kiss on the lips on a Spanish player. I do not want to condone the rather bizarre and overly personal celebration of the head of Spanish football (idiot) but I do feel the whole matter has drawn focus away from the football on the pitch and made the hugely successful world cup a feminist issue where discussions are now revolving around appropriate behaviour between men and women rather than the actual sport.

Young girl players instead of looking up to the heroic exploits of our players are now getting drawn into much more general discussions about personal limits and what constitutes assault. I think this is all a pity really.

If he had immediately acknowledged that his behaviour was inappropriate and made a proper apology and acknowledgement things would be very different.

Definitely.

Sky news mentioned recently that the female CEO of the women's football league in Spain reckon that his career in football is over now....

Yep. By doubling down he and the Spanish FA have made sure the story has blown up in their faces.

Agreed. That performance he gave at the press conference meant this went beyond being a conduct issue and became one of being a complete fucking liability.

Because even if one takes the view that it's all overblown or whatever nonsense OP has come out with, a huge part of being in positions like this is how you deal with difficult situations. There's a lot of politics in it. So you can't go and throw a load of petrol on the flames. He and the Spanish FA forced FIFAs hand.

Willmafrockfit · 26/08/2023 20:11

Luis Rubiales was suspended by Fifa pending the outcome of its disciplinary proceedings. Spain's entire coaching staff from their World Cup win - except for the manager - also resigned over the controversy.

7eleven · 26/08/2023 20:20

I wanted the Lionesses to win, but my admiration for the Spanish woman has gone through the roof. Imagine having to deal with these slimy cruds and then play such good football. Well done ladies.

calimali · 26/08/2023 22:30

And now Vilda is saying the kiss was inappropriate - funny that, I am sure this is the same man clapping enthusiastically in the press conference when Rubiales was so obnoxiously shouting that he would not resign as he had done nothing wrong.

Vilda clearly trying to save his own skin here.

Both of them should be removed from post immediately.

So this is going to the courts and I think if there is specific legal action consent will be explored there specifically with any defamation suits. It does look like this event is the 'tip of the iceberg' for other behaviour so we will see what events unfold.

I do think I'm future there has to be caution about non consensual hugging and cheek kissing given the focus on this and maybe the whole thing will bring into sharp focus social boundaries when it comes to physical touching (between any sex). The issue is that a cheek kids can be viewed as a greeting while contact with another's lips then becomes sexual in nature. The site of the kiss important?

Personally, after reading what happened in the Spanish courts to the woman who was repeatedly raped at The Pamplona bull running, I don’t feel hopeful. Not that the uk courts treat women who have been assaulted any better.

On a Spanish website. The masterchef contestant compares her kiss to the host with this football final one. (Also for those who say it isn't common in Spain)

Double standards? Outrage at both? Cultural? So many facets to explore

Jenni Hermoso disagrees and that is all that matters

You being fine with being kissed like that does not change that.

Maddy70 · 27/08/2023 10:33

She has changed her story re consent many times. That's also being investigated too.

Are we going to end up in a world where booze teaches each other without a letter of consent.? Proportion is necessary. It's a fair comment if she didn't like it but it seems shes changed her story following others being outraged. .

New phone so many typos. Sorry ..

BitOutOfPractice · 27/08/2023 10:36

No, the Spanish FA have changed her story, putting out a statement in her name that she didn’t agree with.

btw there’s now an edit function @Maddy70

It's not on the android app yet unfortunately :(

Who actually knows the truth? Its being reported differently in Spanish press than it is in the British press

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 27/08/2023 10:39

No she hasn't.

DuncinToffee · 27/08/2023 10:40

So you are saying that Jenni Hermoso should just put up or shut up rather than tackling the seemingly normalised misogyny in Spain@Maddy70 ?

I am ambivalent if I'm honest. He knew her and it was winning goal of the World Cup. It's fairly common here to kiss someone you know ...

The press here are reporting very differently to the British press with her saying it was fine. It was in the moment

And then other reports saying differently.

So somewhere between is the likely truth

I also think that in his professional capacity. Even if he did know her it was probably inappropriate but not something I can get worked up about

I do think too much is being made of a kiss and detracting from their success

IClaudine · 27/08/2023 11:21

Maddy70 it seems much of the rest of Spain don't view it in the same way, as reported by another poster from Spain.

At least two Spanish people on here have disagreed with @Maddy70

I find it tragic that even though the woman who got kissed has said she didn't like it and didn't want it, Maddy is still ambivalent about it. You would think if it was so prevalent in Spain Jenni would just put up and shut up, as advocated by one or two posters.

Threenow · 26/08/2023 08:29

I agree with you @iDontBelieveAnyOfYou. It's such a ridiculous thing to have all this drama over, and has taken the focus off the team and its achievements.

I agree that it has taken the shine off their fantastic achievement and I would have not have had such strong views about it had I not heard about the crotch grabbing (his own, not theirs) incidents. Absolutely disgusting behaviour. Even my footie mad DH and his (usually fairly chauvinistic) friends are appalled.

DuncinToffee · 28/08/2023 11:55

The latest surreal twist: the mother of Luis Rubiales, Ángeles Béjar, is going on hunger strike in protest against the 'manhunt' of her son. She is demanding that Jenni Hermoso "tells the truth" over the incident and has 'locked herself' in a church in Montril.

DuncinToffee · 28/08/2023 12:05

And there is more

https://twitter.com/Millar_Colin/status/1696099865011388772?s=20

Ángeles Ruiz, a cousin of Rubiales, has spoken on Spanish TV show @HablandoTVE.

Says the Rubiales family is "unfairly suffering...due to an abnormal rush to judgement."

Addresses Jenni Hermoso directly: "Tell the truth Jenni, why have you changed your statement three times?"

Jenni Hermoso has not changed her statement three times. She has corrected the fabricated statement sent out on her behalf, in which she played no part, as part of the Spanish FA's cover-up.

Worthwhile to remember that FIFA have banned Rubiales and the Spanish FA from contacting Jenni Hermoso or anyone in her environment. It appears media communications addressing Hermoso are now being conveyed through the Rubiales extended family.
