That World Cup kiss

The news about the world cup is being dominated by an unsolicited kiss on the lips on a Spanish player. I do not want to condone the rather bizarre and overly personal celebration of the head of Spanish football (idiot) but I do feel the whole matter has drawn focus away from the football on the pitch and made the hugely successful world cup a feminist issue where discussions are now revolving around appropriate behaviour between men and women rather than the actual sport.

Young girl players instead of looking up to the heroic exploits of our players are now getting drawn into much more general discussions about personal limits and what constitutes assault. I think this is all a pity really.

So much mental and linguistic wrangling @saffronsoup ... Hmm

ThePinkQualityStreet · 26/08/2023 13:26

When I was 17 I was in a night club and a man came along and pulled my top down exposing my breasts to everyone.
I was mortified and devastated but because of films like Carry on Camping etc it was considered ok to do stuff like that.
if I’d have been 17 today and it had happened I would have had the courage to do something about it and everyone would know it was wrong.

so I applaud the Spanish footballer calling the creep out on this.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee provisionally suspends Luis Rubiales, president of the RFEF, for 90 days.

It's bad when even FIFA sees something you are turning yourself into a pretzel not to @saffronsoup

I'd have slapped his face there and then. My young self would have too.

DontGetEvenGetEverything · 26/08/2023 13:39

@BIWI of course there's been lots of good sporting commntary and analysis - great game, great athletes and a great competiton.
I'm not sure what you think I said to contradict this.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 26/08/2023 13:40

Even a corrupt, male dominated organisation like FIFA can read the room and has suspended Rubiales. His demeanour in front of the cameras yesterday was chilling.

IClaudine · 26/08/2023 13:40

That video has really upset me. Those women will have worked hard to get to play for their country. Then they gave to put up with being assaulted. I sometimes think Germaine Greer was right and that men really do hate women, if just subconsciously.

I am sorry that happened to you @ThePinkQualityStreet .

I literally quoted your post!

Which was, again:

Whereas lots of journalists and commentators are interested in women's soccer not because they love the game, but because women's sport is a feminist issue. These commentators are not interested in a blow-by-blow discussion of the game

maltravers · 26/08/2023 14:34

Well that’s a deserved rebuke to the Spanish FA.

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/08/2023 15:36

There we go, he's been given the yellow card, here's hoping for a permanent red one.

The RFEF has released a new statement in response to Jenni Hermoso’s statement

“We have to state that Ms. Jennifer Hermoso lies in every statement she makes against the President.”

@saffronsoup have you heard of the concept of CONSENT?

Christ alive what is it about the concept people struggle with?!'

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 26/08/2023 15:53

I am curious how do you define consent in a sports celebration?

//

Generally speaking I'd say it f it's an intimate gesture you either ask first or be ready for repercussions. Especially if you are in a position of power of influence over the other person.

It's not difficult.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 26/08/2023 16:00

I'm learning from this thread that -

As a man, if in any doubt just go for it after all she may be well up for it, and

As a woman your consent is meaningless as someone will justify his actions anyway.

Our poor daughters are tucked Angry

Fucked even.

11 members of the technical staff across Spanish women’s football have resigned from their positions in support of Jenni Hermoso

It ranges from both senior national team assistant manager, U19/U20 coach, senior team analyst to the senior team physio

girlswillbegirls · 26/08/2023 17:10

This chauvinistic individual actually made the country to agree with something for the first time.
All Spanish political parties are united against Rubiales. All Spanish TV channels and papers are against him right now.
I feel even emotional with it. The country is for the first time united. It's something that never ever happens.

BIWI · 26/08/2023 17:20

That's very heartening to hear @girlswillbegirls

LizzieSiddal · 26/08/2023 17:22

@girlswillbegirls so glad to hear that.

megletthesecond · 26/08/2023 17:23

He's a sleazy, gropey pig.
The women will win in the end and he's making it even worse for himself.

Greengagesnfennel · 26/08/2023 18:13

Yabvvu

A) to think his behaviour is a not a big deal - it is. Combined with his crotch hold and the mass action from all the women who have been working with him the past few years he is clearly a known lecherous creep.

B) to think it overshadows their achievements. (It is giving me the rage hearing the BBC report that. They seriously need to review their own bias). It overshadows nothing the team achieved. It highlights what those achievements mean. The balance of power has shifted. He is a shit talentless groper who hasn't yet realised that. The womens team now have the success ability and strength to call this kind of thing out. They have not been overshadowed.

NotMadeOfStone · 26/08/2023 18:28

Imagine all the stuff that hasn't come out in public yet!

SheilaFentiman · 26/08/2023 18:35

The difference between team mates, peers, hugging each other on the field and a player having her head seized by her boss and forcibly kissed on the lips is obvious to anyone not an apologist.

Even in an office, people hug each other sometimes for personal news or a big contract win, say. FFS.
