That World Cup kiss

The news about the world cup is being dominated by an unsolicited kiss on the lips on a Spanish player. I do not want to condone the rather bizarre and overly personal celebration of the head of Spanish football (idiot) but I do feel the whole matter has drawn focus away from the football on the pitch and made the hugely successful world cup a feminist issue where discussions are now revolving around appropriate behaviour between men and women rather than the actual sport.

Young girl players instead of looking up to the heroic exploits of our players are now getting drawn into much more general discussions about personal limits and what constitutes assault. I think this is all a pity really.

I haven't rtft so apologies if this has already been said. Yes of course it's a pity that the Spanish team's world cup win has been overshadowed by this, but it is completely and utterly Rubiales' fault. Any young girls watching the final and hoping this can be them one day must have gone from feeling proud and relieved to finally have women's sport taken seriously, to being absolutely disappointed and horrified to see that when the team are about to be presented with the trophy to mark their hard work, a man has to embarrass them and make them feel like the little ladies who deserve a kiss for their efforts and to just smile and politely accept it. It was all very uncomfortable as soon as they started walking up and he hugged the first few, knowing how many would be following and having to put up with the same. Would Rubiales have lifted up and kissed the men's team? I doubt that very much. The point is, he undid all the hard work that had been done for women and girls to feel that they can be part of football and will be taken seriously as professional athletes. This was the height of unprofessional. Yes it was an emotional moment, but this crossed the line, and in front of millions of people watching. It's a good thing that the issue is being highlighted and not just brushed under the carpet as has always been the way previously.

Few contrasting Rubiales family developments

Extraordinary interview with Juan Rubiales, uncle of Luis. “All of our family stands with Jenni.” Calls his nephew “a cowardly man.” Juan adds: “He is obsessed with power, with luxury, and with women. He needs re-education on how to treat women.”

And

Ángeles Béjar, mother of Luis Rubiales, has been rushed to hospital. The parish priest of the church where she has locked herself in for a hunger strike (now lasting over 48 hours) explained that her scheduled press conference for this PM was cancelled.

Today is a good day. The day many men like Rubiales out there will finally learn this behaviour is NOT acceptable, no excuses any more. Not just that but that their job is on the line.
Great news!
