A bin. And grit salt. This is the mundanity of my purchases now. And don’t get too excited, but a pizza cutter is also being delivered imminently.

what mundane purchases have you bought recently? Tell me I’m not the only one buying bins.

Those mini choppers are AMAZING. Mine is electronic but it was still pretty cheap and I use it pretty much every day. I swear our vegetable intake has tripled since I got it. I throw in any old thing to stews and curries and pasta sauces and it’s brilliant for getting us to 7 a day. We get through like 4 courgettes a week thanks to it.

peachgreen · 25/08/2023 13:19

This is honestly my favourite thread in years btw. Please share more amazing mundane things, I want to buy them all.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/08/2023 13:23

I bought an egg topper/cutter... for boiled eggs, it looks like a small pair of scissors.
Also bought a hairdryer holder, I was sick of seeing it either on the floor or on my chest of draws, it didn't really have a place iykwim.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/08/2023 13:27

New kitchen scissors
I needed scissors to open the pack!

@tapdancingmum can you share the link to your dustpan and brush please? Mine is falling apart and I use it daily!

It was this one.

I’m going to get one of those wee brushes folk have mentioned.

i do feel with my grit bin, any bin with a lid would have done as long as it’s got a sturdy lid that is somewhat airtight. But now I’m going to be the smug arsehole with a dedicated grit bin. And a scoop.

those people in the Joseph and Joseph bin advert look so organised and calm. Must be because of the bin. Sadly I have not the space for a bin of such height and stature.

im still none the wise about the potato sorter

I googled potato separator, the hits I got seemed to be machines for making mash on an industrial scale.ConfusedGrin

peachgreen · 25/08/2023 18:13

Ooh another exciting one I got recently – tiny ziploc bags to keep my earrings in so they stay in pairs and don’t tarnish.

peachgreen · 25/08/2023 18:15

Re: potato separator– I’m going to assume it’s either a hassleback slicer thing OR something that sits in your saucepan so you can keep boiled vegetables separate.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 25/08/2023 18:22

It's not a slicer. The words were 'potato separator tray'. That could mean a pan insert, but it seems unlikely.

@continentallentil please come back and enlighten us.

I wonder if it’s some sort of wooden tray with square compartments that prevents stored potatoes from touching each other- do they maybe go off more quickly if they are touching, like fruit?

Maggiemaggieooo · 25/08/2023 18:29

Some new kitchen cookware which made me happy 🤣

MrsAvocet · 25/08/2023 18:32

Well I have just ordered something you will all be envious of... a new wash bag.
I'm going into hospital for some surgery soon and I noticed my current one is looking decidedly tatty hence this extravagant purchase! It's quite nice though. Blue and white seaside type theme.
Might treat myself to some new slippers for the occasion too actually.

vestedinterests · 25/08/2023 18:39

Today I bought an extension lead and a new spatula. Spatula was reduced from £4 to £1.20. I'm living my best life.

hanka · 25/08/2023 19:12

Today I bought two Underwear Organisers from Dunelm for our DC going off to uni. When I came home and started to tidy up laundry I realised I really, really needed (and wanted) one. So now I need to go back and get some more🙄

I'm another one intrigued by the potsto separator.

My most recently mundane purchase was toaster.tongs (bamboo, Lakelamd). A marvel! No more burnt fingers or dicing with death by using a knife.

And I can also second the recommendation of plug-in, stick-on LED striplights for undercounter lightning. Took 2 mins to install - no sparky required - and make such a difference.

Many blessings on your bamboo tongs @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn may your toast never burn! I shall look into one of those on payday.

Lagershandy · 25/08/2023 19:41

Raspberry sauce for drizzling on ice cream. The Amazon seller claims it tastes just like the one ice cream men use.
My DH will be so disappointed if the sauce doesn't live up to the claim.

RedVanYellowVan · 25/08/2023 19:45

MrsAvocet the best bit about going into hospital (apart from being cured of whatever the problem is) is buying new things. Slippers certainly, and what about a new dressing gown?

My purchase of the week was a pair of secateurs. We have several pairs but these are very sharp and have comfortable handles. I am hoping it doesn't rain all day tomorrow so I can go out to use them.

NormalForNuneaton · 25/08/2023 20:16

How perfect that this thread just popped up .... the very same day that I just purchased a new gas meter box.

I've found my spiritual home.

New knitting needles 😂 a new insulated water bottle each for DC and I. However, I moved last year and now have a small garden with a path down the middle so I too am secretly contemplating the excitement of a grit bin.

Just bought two more sets of knitting needles. I really need to get out more 😂

BrandyandGinger · 25/08/2023 21:20

I bought drawer organisers recently too. When I sorted by sock drawer I realised that I'm a secret hoarder of trainer liners. I probably won't need to buy any again until I'm retired.

chillyjilly · 25/08/2023 21:42

We bought a grit bin a couple of months ago from ebay.

Recent buys, a new vacuum sealer machine as mine broke after 4 years, bought the exact same one again. Some white glitter to make some more Christmas baubles with and some more meal worms for the garden birds which frankly I feel like I have pets with the amount they cost me. They are a joy to watch though, especially the blackbirds who love to sunbathe. I thought it was injured the first time I saw it as it had its wing stretched out and was motionless, a google search showed me that they do sunbathe.

On the subject of bins, I have a Brabantia one that is still going strong after at least 15 years. I still have the spare lid catch as I thought by now it would need it but it doesn't. Best thing about it you can open the lid with a press of your foot or elbow so no messy hands on the bin lid. I recently looked up the cost and at £180 for the bin I am hoping this lasts another 5 years.

A new hanging shower rack. Old one had gone irretrievably rusty. It's huge though.

One scoop does a pakora or falafel, two scoops does a muffin.
