A bin. And grit salt. This is the mundanity of my purchases now. And don’t get too excited, but a pizza cutter is also being delivered imminently.

what mundane purchases have you bought recently? Tell me I’m not the only one buying bins.

I also bought a new bath mat, those command strips to hang up pictures, and am waiting on a big frame to put a cork board in for the kids pictures, and some weed killer spray for the block paving out the front of our house as the maintenance contractors haven't sprayed it so having to do it ourselves (we live on one of those new build estates where you pay a service charge for communal grass to be cut, play area maintained etc. Just apparently not for weeds growing out the road to be sprayed...)

Yesterday I ordered 3 different kinds of fluid for the chemical toilet in the Motorhome.

The stuff I’ve been using for years is not working as well as it used to. I will rota the 3 new ones and see which I like best.

My life is this exciting 🙄

I fell asleep after starting this thread.

A clear case of a post bin-buy adrenaline crash.

I went for a pretty cheap model on my grit bin; mainly because the next bracket up seemed to be the big yellow efforts that were £150. This one also comes with what will no doubt be a ridiculously small scoop.

But Jean mcsorley, dougie Blakely and a host others have given it 4-5 stars. Although they too, have purchased in summer so the real mottle of the bin has yet to be tested.

Oh just read more of the thread, and see I should have used all the white vinegar instead of buying weed killer!!

Ahhhhh! So that's what a grit bin is!!!!
(Adds to ever growing list)

Baneofmyexistence · 25/08/2023 08:53

I haven’t bought it yet but I really need a new debobbler, the blades have gone blunt on mine.

DuskandSummer · 25/08/2023 08:56

Thanks OP I've just added a grit bin to my basket. My recent mundane purchases are a show horn and sticky trees to catch the fruit flies on my houseplants.

ShangPie · 25/08/2023 09:01

Love this domestic-mundane chat!

I need a new bin after the lid broke so had a look at some of the suggestions here (❤️JosephJoseph one!!) BUT then I realised that my bin has a 5 year guarantee! So I emailed to ask them to fix it instead of buying a new one.

Assuming they can fix it, I def recommend this as it looks fancy and steel but is actually recycled plastic: Curver bin

A pair of tongs from Tesco for turning things over on the oven tray, and it has a special ridge so you can pull out the whole oven shelf if you want!

YourWinter · 25/08/2023 09:09

I bought a new washing up bowl as people were coming to stay.

The old one is now in the shed with the previous three washing up bowls, which are discoloured but watertight. Useful.

froomeonthebroom · 25/08/2023 09:15

Please, for the love of all that's holy, will someone tell me what a potato separator is????? I'm sure I must need one!

FloNightingale · 25/08/2023 09:19

Winter screenwash, garden waste bags, safety pins and bird food.

CornedBeef451 · 25/08/2023 09:24

@tapdancingmum can you share the link to your dustpan and brush please? Mine is falling apart and I use it daily!

DRS1970 · 25/08/2023 09:34

2 meters of 75mm diameter reinforced rubber hose.

I'm another one intrigued by the potsto separator.

My most recently mundane purchase was toaster.tongs (bamboo, Lakelamd). A marvel! No more burnt fingers or dicing with death by using a knife.

And I can also second the recommendation of plug-in, stick-on LED striplights for undercounter lightning. Took 2 mins to install - no sparky required - and make such a difference.

A long squeegee to get dog hair out the downstairs carpet. I do vac but for some reason the hair remains and the baby pulls it out and eats it 😵 I saw a tiktok of someone 'sweeping' their carpet with one and mounds of hair coming up so I'm hoping for great things!!

FaintlyMacabre · 25/08/2023 10:08

A set of 3 pop up laundry baskets- one for each child. The bathroom laundry basket is much too far away to stand a chance of getting used so I’m hoping these will be life transforming. I ordered them after discovering that two of my children (admittedly the ones with ADHD) were using their wardrobes/drawers for dirty clothes storage then complaining they had no clothes 🙄

20 litres of white vinegar, I use it as a weedkiller on my drive.

Does this work? My drive is an embarrassment. But does it kill the nice bushes and shrubs?

frustratednomad · 25/08/2023 11:13

@catin8oots It only works on shallow rooted weeds so ideal for driveways, paths etc, so it wont kill things like large dandelions, thistles etc, it wont kill bushes or shrubs. See the recipe on my pp, it really works and it's fast.

I just bought a little food chopper powered by a drawstring. Even better found it on a charity stall for £1.50 brand new! Made my day!

I’ve got one of these small choppers, they are ideal for chopping nuts or herbs. I also have a Cuisinart food processor which has a small bowl as well as the larger bowl, mounted on top of each other so does not take up much space on my worktops. I use both of these gadgets at least once a week.

TonTonMacoute · 25/08/2023 12:07

Oooh, thanks for reminding me I need a new dustpan and brush!

lastminutewednesday · 25/08/2023 12:11

After about 15 years of thinking 'I really need a pastry brush' about three times a year, I've finally bought one off the back of this thread

Added to my list! My drive is fairly level but I have mobility problems and use a walking stick so use salt on the drive to get to my car safely. I usually keep some in a basic storage bin on my covered front step but this bin is much better.

I might need to stop following this thread as my shopping list is getting very long as I seem to need most of the items being mentioned!

It wasn’t cheap but DH told me last night our new kitchen bin makes him happy. It makes me happy too. Its so easy to change the bags and clean the inner buckets, not that I’ve needed to. The bottom section rolls out on casters. Currently 20% on the Joseph Joseph site. There’s a white and a metal option for naughty whippets.

https://www.josephjoseph.com/products/totem-max-60l-waste-recycling-bins-black

Oh, this looks amazing! I’ve just in the process of planning a new kitchen and so have been discussing where to put my bins. I currently have a couple swing bin, use one half for general waste and the other half for tins, cans etc. I then have a cloth bag on the back of the door for paper and a small food waste bin underneath a worktop. But I was thinking of incorporating the bins into the cupboards in my new kitchen but this bin would be better, all four current recycling containers in one unit - I can split one bin into two for tins and paper. Yes, it’s expensive, but only a small percentage of the eye watering cost of my new kitchen - been waiting for 12 years to get round to it!
