How do British Parents feel about...

...the Brexit vote, given how it has disadvantaged those children without dual nationality?

I'm from NI, so very fortunate that mine still have FOM. I'd be raging if anyone took that away from them.

Thousands of children homeless in the U.K., people struggling to feed their children, childcare costs through the roof…but yes I worry about Edwin not being able to study in the Dordogne!

Edwin will still have no trouble going to study in the Dordogne.

Alfie from Streatham will find it a damned sight harder to get a decent job abroad. WC people have always migrated and traveled for work far more than the middle classes who are doing pretty nicely where they are.

Even before full FoM our membership of the EU enabled unemployed skilled and unskilled workers to work elsewhere in Europe and support their families back in the UK. Boys from the Blackstuff was not fantasy - it was based on a common experience under Thatcher's unemployment regime.

Raging here. An election can't come soon enough. And rejoining but not sure when that will be.

@Abhannmor thank you, appreciate you getting back to me.

I recently got passports for English born kids. English born myself of Irish parentage and grew up in Ireland. I don't have a UK passport but could if I wanted to.
Its all bonkers and retrograde. Most EU citizens travel on ID cards.

I wasn't talking about Spain.

Didn’t say you were, just pointing out your comments about economics. I recently visited the Balearics and noted that transport, supermarkets etc were a lot better than ours. On time buses (that ran mon-sun) supermarkets full of fresh fruit (that looked spectacular), veg and meat and none of the crap that is going on in this country. So just wondering what economic playing field you’re talking about?

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2023 21:43

Have anyone's DC discussed the costs of Brexit with them?

Im talking about when the Eastern European countries joined the EU. Most countries put certain restrictions in place, but the UK didn't. In my opinion many of the EE countries were not ready to join the EU hence why hundreds of thousands of people moved to the UK. Previously freedom of movement between say the UK and France or the UK and Germany would be much of a muchness. When the EE countries joined it was mainly one way traffic.

whatstheagendatoday · 09/08/2023 21:29

I'm pissed off that my children can't study in EU, and have to pay 9k per year here as a result of this shite. But I guess brexiteers don't think about this as their children and them are unlikely to worry about education. Yes that's right, I think they're uneducated fools for the most part. I'm way more prejudiced now,cos their prejudices were infectious and rubbed off on me it seems.

Probably didn't occur to them because they're earning big bucks as self employed electricians, builders, beauty therapists etc years before your children will see a single cent from their sociology degrees.

fullbloom87 · 09/08/2023 21:49

@TooBigForMyBoots

Explain how WC kids have to pay more now?

LadyWithLapdog · 09/08/2023 21:50

@Comedycook I found EE immigration a positive. Young people, good language skills, good work ethic. The odd bad apples that the right wing tabloids delighted in telling us about, but no problem in my area. In time they’ll become the French and the German you don’t object to.

Where about in the uk do you live?

eurochick · 09/08/2023 21:53

Fucking furious. I studied and worked in Europe when I was younger. I am so annoyed and disappointed that my daughter will not have the same opportunities.

I never said a single thing about EE people. I'm talking about sheer numbers emigrating to the UK versus British people emigrating there based on economic reasons.

I feel like the world has closed its doors to the UK. The world has shrunk. And we are stuck in a very small place.

Like it was the ‘good old days’ just a few years ago, when we all had the opportunity to live and work anywhere in Europe. I took this opportunity, as did most of my family and friends.

Exactly the same here 😐

Londons a big place. Which district? It makes a huge difference to what your experience with EE. Migration will be like.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/08/2023 21:55

Someone made a derogatory comment about WC children so I politely explained to them they were wrong on their assumptions.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/08/2023 21:55

Yes but I'm not talking about the people...I'm talking about the economics. I have nothing against any nationality. I'm making the point that the emigration between the UK and EE countries was only moving in one direction. Whereas freedom of movement between countries with comparable economies is more balanced.

newnamethanks · 09/08/2023 22:00

I am furious on behalf of my children and grandchildren who have had many opportunities stolen at the insistence of the Brexit lunkheads. And I am furious with all of those who are too ignorant, many wilfully so, to acknowledge what they have done to this country. They should be in prison but it will be the House of Lords for them.

fullbloom87 · 09/08/2023 22:02

The point of the matter is EE migrants were flooding the uk and yet the only uk residents leaving to work and study in the EU were the most privileged. Left behind were the WC who had to compete for housing, education and jobs from EE migrants. This is not something that is understood well by people who are privileged enough to Work, travel and study in the EU.
I didn't vote in the referendum and I understand grievances from both sides. I don't really care either way if we're in or out. I'm just explaining what I've been told by people I know who voted leave.

The UK voted to close it's door to the world.
