...the Brexit vote, given how it has disadvantaged those children without dual nationality?

I'm from NI, so very fortunate that mine still have FOM. I'd be raging if anyone took that away from them.

@Exasperatednow are Swedes and Norwegians not European then?

Geordielass1987 · 09/08/2023 21:08

I wonder if anyone could advise on this, sorry to jump onto this one but you all know what you’re talking about so I hope you don’t mind.
if I was born in Northern Ireland to an Irish father English mother and then moved to England, can I have dual citizenship? And therefore can my children (English dad living in England) children born in England can they have dual citizenship or am I way off the mark? Trying to think what may benefit them with regards to travel.

I did. So did a lot of my friends and family. From bar work, fruit picking, au-pairing, training as well as career stuff. All working class, all able to take advantage of FoM, be it for a single summer season or longer term.

I get that it's not for everyone but we all had the option. That's no longer the case. Now some UK citizens entering adulthood and employment have an advantage that other UK citizens don't. Because of Brexit.

Did you vote Leave @Comedycook?

Yes...i said I did earlier in the thread. I voted leave reluctantly

My English born husband has to pay £375 to get a sticker in his Dutch passport to prove he is British and entitled to live here. He has dual nationality being half dutch but gets stopped by customs trying to get into England after holidays!
Passports are very expensive now. All because of breckshit

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to have 2 passports? You show the Dutch one to the Dutch authorities and the British one to the Brits. No stamp required.

In answer to your question, I’m fuming for everyone and everyone’s dcs, who can’t move around freely. We are privileged as dh is from the EU and dd already was registered as a dual national. Dh and I have now also become dual as a result of Brexshit.

Fast forward a few years when the British economic situation has worsened, unemployment has risen, and emigration isn’t a middle-class jaunt, it’s a necessity for some people.

Previously, they could have gone to Berlin or Paris but now the options are Australia or Canada.

Cue a heap of MNetters crying that they only see their kids once a year because flights are long and expensive, and they have no relationship with their grandkids.

I don’t understand how anyone can argue that freely traveling to and working in 20+ neighbouring countries isn’t a massive advantage.

DrCoconut · 09/08/2023 21:14

DS1 can get an Irish passport via his father's side. The rest of us are stuck on Brexit island unfortunately. The thing that makes me angry about it is that most of the people I know of who voted leave have no ambition to work anywhere much abroad, travel beyond a week's all inclusive to Benidorm, study, take part in international collaboration etc. Their phobia of "foreigners coming here taking our jobs" has ruined opportunities for those who want more in life. I know there will be people who don't fit this mould but that is my experience and I do think it's a significant number of Brexit supporters. My brother works in a scientific field and jobs in his area in the EU are regularly not open to UK applications because of the increased paperwork and hassle whereas someone from eg Germany can just move and start work. Same with travel to a conference or similar. Why would they employ someone who needs a permit when they can have someone who can pack a bag and jump on a flight at short notice? My brother is fortunate to qualify for an EU passport too (different fathers so I don't 😫) but he has enough empathy to really feel for his friends whose careers have been poleaxed.

Louloulouenna · 09/08/2023 21:16

I am happy that Brexit has shone a light on the hugely depressing effect that FOM had on wages in the UK, particularly for lower skilled workers.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/08/2023 19:22

I don’t think about it- equally I don’t worry about the fact they can’t just go and work in America or Australia or Singapore or….etc without paperwork.

i worry far more about the general state of the U.K.- the chance to go and live in another country has always been for the more privileged

The privileged? No,the point of the EU is that anyone could go on holiday to a EU country, meet a boy or a girl and decide to stay and get a job to see how that relationship might shape up. The holiday could have been somewhere fancy or simply Benidorm.

fullbloom87 · 09/08/2023 21:07

@Exasperatednow are Swedes and Norwegians not European then?

I suspect you fully understand that they are in the schengen area and all that implies and are not nearly as obtuse as you are making out.

Or just doing that word salad this that brexit voters do to make themselves feel better.

LimeCheesecake · 09/08/2023 21:19

Last summer in Greece I noticed on holiday all the entertainment staff were Swedish. The nannies/staff in the kids club, the people running the cycling sessions and the aqua fitness etc. as previously, the bar and waiting staff were Greek, but pre-covid holidays in the Med, often the entertainment staff in a hotel aimed at Brits were British, even if it was owned by a big international company like Tui. (I didn’t hear any other language/accents at the pool/ restaurant, there may have been non-British guests but they were defiantly in a majority British hotel)

It was explained to me that Swedish people have good English so while they can hire Brits, it’s just easier to hire Swedish young people to do a season, particularly last year when they needed short recruitment times given covid issues when they were starting the season recruitment.

Not done the big hotel on the med holiday this year so not sure if this is a long term trend.

It was Kind of like a middle finger up to the most privileged in society

The most privileged in society are still grand. They always will be because they have money, contacts and advisors.

Brexit didn't faze them. Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees Mogg, Nigel Farage, all their kids are fine and further advantaged by Brexit. It was a big Fuck You to WC, UK kids, who now have to pay more and jump through hoops when they didn't have to before.

Yes and yes. More paperwork for your kids but you can get Irish passports. And keep your British ones too.

Because its going so swimmingly now that there isn't enough people to do jobs. It's giving such a boost to our economy and business isn't it? Thers so much surplus cash to pay on wages.

Btw, our local farmer shut up shop as they lost all their exports. Other farms just aren't harvesting as they can't get people. It's going swimmingly.

How? You’re talking as if we haven’t had non-stop strikes in all sectors for the past two years. Brexit is shit and hadn’t shone any light.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 09/08/2023 21:26

Don't put words in my mouth.

I have no disdain for anyone. I'm merely saying that freedom of movement can only work when countries are on a similar playing field economically.

Read an interesting article a couple of days ago that said Spain was down to 2% inflation due to their forward thinking ideas on reducing it. Some might say that we’re the ones behind economically.

JamSandle · 09/08/2023 21:28

Sad.

Geordielass1987 · 09/08/2023 21:28

@Abhannmor thank you, appreciate you getting back to me.

whatstheagendatoday · 09/08/2023 21:29

I'm pissed off that my children can't study in EU, and have to pay 9k per year here as a result of this shite. But I guess brexiteers don't think about this as their children and them are unlikely to worry about education. Yes that's right, I think they're uneducated fools for the most part. I'm way more prejudiced now,cos their prejudices were infectious and rubbed off on me it seems.

Furious

pompomdaisy · 09/08/2023 21:31

I was so angry then that people were so shortsighted and still to this day no one has offered one single benefit to Brexit. I repeat not one single benefit!

We deserved the leaders we got!
