I’m looking for something new to watch and rather than series/films I think I want to start getting stuck into some documentaries.

So, what do you recommend please? New or old, what’s been your favourite? Open to all subject areas!

I quite liked "how to fix a drug's scandal", "sins of our mother" and "puppet master".

I'll be watching this thread with interest as I love documentaries

Daughters of Destiny. About a boarding school in south India set up to educate girls from impoverished, Untouchable caste backgrounds into successful careers, and follows a number of these girls through their time at the school. It’s very thought-provoking as you can see the problems with this model as well as the ways it benefits the children.

Fyre, about the failed fyre festival was an interesting watch

American Factory, about a Chinese firm re opening up an old General Motors factory in America, and the difficulties between the two cultures trying to work together.

Also the 3 episode series about Bill Gates

The Mark Cavendish doc is very very good.
Then watch the tour de france one.

Wild wild country - lots of original footage about a cult

Chimp Empire

Inside the mind of a cat

Annalisatheantelope · 07/08/2023 21:17

Loads, most of which already mentioned but thought Athlete A was brilliant as well as the mardough murders.

SheWontSheCantShesLeft · 07/08/2023 21:18

Agree with a couple of the other recommendations.

I loved Fyre - documentary film about a disastrous festival.

Wild, Wild Country is amazing series about a cult.

Puppet Master and Tinder Swindle - both gripping docs about conmen.

CrushingOnRubies · 07/08/2023 21:18

Our National Parks- just to hear Barack Obama talk about a subject he's clearly passionate about for an hour

LegendsBeyond · 07/08/2023 21:18

Abducted in Plain Sight

The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez

TheHorneSection · 07/08/2023 21:21

Wild Wild Country as fantastic, really makes you think about new religions and societies acceptance of them (to a point!)

I really enjoyed the Woodstock doc about the festival that went wrong recently.

TheHorneSection · 07/08/2023 21:21

Oh, and Blackfish, if you haven’t seen that yet.

Landlubber2019 · 07/08/2023 21:34

The mark Cavendish was excellent to watch. Not Netflix but I got Disney plus just to watch dopesick , best documentary and years after watching it I still get riled by the sackler family, just shameful!

MossCow · 07/08/2023 21:39

The staircase.

I watch it every few years and I'm always shocked at the participants.

waltzingparrot · 07/08/2023 21:40

Bkackfish and The Jinx were standout documentaries to me.

I also enjoyed the Explained series of short 20min episodes on a whole bunch of subjects.

lapisamethyst · 07/08/2023 21:42

The Deepest Breath is very good

sashagabadon · 07/08/2023 21:43

Woodstock 99 was eye popping and rather wild

YoSof · 07/08/2023 21:43

Lots to go at thanks everyone!

I second the deepest breath. My octopus teacher was also lovely if that's still on

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/08/2023 21:47

Watching the thread as I love a documentary. The best I've seen in the last few years by far is Navalny - but I think that might be Amazon Prime.

mogtheexcellent · 07/08/2023 21:49

Haven't seen many but the mermaid one was intersting. I binged it which is unusual for me

TitoMojito · 07/08/2023 21:51

Agree with Abducted in Plain Sight (and it's spiritual successor The Girl in the Picture) The Tinder Swindler and Fyre!

Also recommend Challenger, about the space shuttle disaster, and Vatican Girl, about the very shady disappearance of a girl who lived in the Vatican. The case was reopened this year which is interesting.

If you have Discovery+ at all, I also recommend Fruitcake Fraud.

Doggytastic · 07/08/2023 21:52

The Staircase

I just posted this after you. Do you think he murdered her?

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 07/08/2023 21:54

Agree with PP about the deepest breath - loved it!
