I’m looking for something new to watch and rather than series/films I think I want to start getting stuck into some documentaries.

So, what do you recommend please? New or old, what’s been your favourite? Open to all subject areas!

I find myself thinking about The Staircase very often - it’s a classic. It was interesting to then watch the drama version with Colin Firth years after and seeing them recreate the documentary making.GrinConfused

What’s The Deepest Breath about… without giving spoilers?

A Lion In The House, if you want to have your heart ripped out and never feel the same again.

Can I give it a miss ? Sounds horrific and I've absolutely no idea what it's about.

My favourite was "The Vow' about Keith Raniere and NXIVM - the power he had over so many women - and branding them with hot irons in the pubic area, the mind boggles....

The Vow Part II | Official Trailer | HBO

The truth will find you.The #HBO Original documentary series returns to continue the revealing story behind NXIVM. Set against the federal trial of The Unite...

It’s about free diving, so diving with no oxygen. It’s beautifully filmed but this is an extremely dangerous sport its very tense at times

userxx · 08/08/2023 22:32

@Emsb2022 it was so good and intriguing.

It’s about paediatric cancer. I am simultaneously glad I watched it but also wish I hadn’t. It will sit with me forever, I think.

I was addicted to it! I just couldn't not believe he had such power over those women (utter creep) but then this is how cults work I guess, with seemingly charismatic leaders who make you feel special and draw you in, and make you do anything they want - poor Nancy and her daughter 🤨

Living undocumented

When they see us (not a documentary but a true crime drama)

The Puppet Master was weirdly and scarily compelling.
There's also one about a French woman who was murdered in County Cork, which was also very well made.

The one about the woman murdered in Cork is very good i cannot remember the name of it.

cloudydays97 · 09/08/2023 02:46

The one about the murder in cork is called Sophie a murder in west cork

I'll Be Gone in the Dark
“A six-part documentary series based on the book of the same name, I'll Be Gone in the Dark explores writer Michelle McNamara's investigation into the dark world of the violent predator she dubbed "The Golden State Killer," the man who terrorized California in the 1970s and 80s and is responsible for 50 home-invasion ...”

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this yet.

Warning: descriptions of the murders are grim. There were some survivors - so there are first hand accounts.

The story of the writer/investigator’s life is touching. And Adds another level.

Tell Me Who I Am

I've watched around half of this today but I'm finding it quite triggering due to things, and just don't know if I can finish it.

I only watched a little bit of it the only Netflix documentary I cannot watch is sins of the mother. It is hard to imagine how evil anyone can be this story is just heartbreaking.

Just watched American Manhunt - The Boston Marathon bombing. So good. (3 parter) well worth a watch.

TokyoSushi · 09/08/2023 21:19

Wow. Thank you so much to those who recommended Icarus. I have watched it in about 4 parts throughout today, utterly utterly fascinating.

Words · 10/08/2023 06:11

Just watched one about the reuniting of triplets who were separated at birth. Very interesting and very sad.

Another vote for Sophie - the west cork murder. Very well made.

overitunderit · 10/08/2023 06:30

The Deepest Breath might be the best documentary I've ever seen, full stop

jamsandwich1 · 10/08/2023 06:33

I really loved Fyre and Woodstock 99 but I also thought Sherpa was good!

Atreus · 10/08/2023 06:45

Another vote for Wild Wild Country here too. Just as you think a cult documentary can't get any more bonkers, it does!! I found it fascinating as one of my much oldest sisters spent a number of years at a slightly less bonkers version in India and then in the US.

Also, despite having zero interest in motorsports, I've loved F1 Drive to Survive.

PetitPorpoise · 10/08/2023 06:51

Bad Vegan is really good
