I’m looking for something new to watch and rather than series/films I think I want to start getting stuck into some documentaries.

So, what do you recommend please? New or old, what’s been your favourite? Open to all subject areas!

The speedcubers about people solving Rubik's cubes competitively was good. Also North of the sun about two friends staying on an uninhabited Norwegian island for nine months.

Thank you to those who recommended the Wham documentary.

I watched it tonight and it took me right back to my teen years. It also made me realise how skewed my perception of time is - I would have sworn that Careless Whisper came a fair bit later in the timeline!

What a beautiful and honest friendship.

Running with the Devil was fascinating. All about John McAfee. I had no idea about his crazy life.

A Lion In The House, if you want to have your heart ripped out and never feel the same again.

Unbearably sad and a very difficult watch. But so powerful. My DH wouldn't watch it with me, so I sat in my office watched it and wept.

But sometimes you need reminding that there are far far worst things that can happen

Not Netflix but has anyone seen Hunting The Catfish Crime Gang on BBC iPlayer?? it literally blew my mind .

RobinEllacotStrike · 30/05/2024 18:31

The Volcano on Netflix is good.
It tells the story of the people who were on Whakaari/White Island in NZ when it erupted a few years ago. Its incredible people were even allowed there.

The survivors and the people who went to help the victims (who were severly burnt) were unimaginably brave.

American Murder: The family next door (really haunts me and I think about those girls often

This has haunted me too and although it was very well done, I actually wish I'd never watched it as I found it so unbearably upsetting. So if anyone gets at all upset by the thought of children being hurt then I would genuinely say do not watch it. It was harrowing.

Tour de France - and there's a second series starting soon.

The Andy Warhol diaries
The billionaire, the butler & the boyfriend. How the head of L'Oréal gave away millions to a gold digger boyfriend & the subsequent fall out.

A drama doc that I really enjoyed is Halston about US fashion designer of that name.

I follow it all on YouTube still, it's harrowing. I still shed a tear now, watching all the home videos etc.
Poor Shanann's Facebook is still there too.

I've watched Woodstock 99 after recommendation further up this thread. I've really enjoyed watching it, but bloody hell, what a fiasco. I've been to dozens of live music festivals and some of them have been basic or chaotic, but never anything like that - thank goodness.

I love a good documentary but often find the Netflix ones are so longwinded- something that should be a two-part stretched into 6 episodes 🥱

RubyRue79 · 18/06/2024 11:54

Escaping twin flames… just bizarre how easy people get sucked in.

Yes in some cases this is very true. I started watching a documentary about an art robbery at a gallery in Boston. I saw two and a half episodes but then got bored with them discussing the same things over and over.

In contrast, I'm loving the Tour de France documentary and wish there were twice as many episodes.

A Secret Love - about two women who kept their love secret for decades and finally married after 70 years together.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/06/2024 18:23

When The Screaming Stops - documentary about Bros and specifically one of the twins (sorry can't remember which one). It was so SO good. Don't know if it's still available now.

Nitgel · 18/06/2024 18:25

Dallas cowboy cheerleaders starts Thursday. It's fab

Duckdown · 18/06/2024 18:32

Watched a documentary about Gene Wilder on Netflix last night. A gorgeous man and a really lovely documentary. Highly recommend.

GoogleWhacking · 18/06/2024 18:49

Don't fuck with cats. Literally unbelievable

Howareu · 18/06/2024 18:58

The Dawn Wall & Free Solo - both are fantastic viewing(over 8/10 IMDb)

AsparagusGirl · 18/06/2024 19:00

Has anyone said Maiden? The all female round the world yacht crew. Really good.

MissMarplesNiece · 19/06/2024 11:28

@Nitgel Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders - is that on Netflix? I used to watch when it was on a Freeview channel (can't remember which one). I really enjoyed it, curious because I never thought a programme about cheerleaders would be my kind of thing. But those women put the most ferocious energy into being at the top of their game, it's interesting to watch their ambition and dedication.

Nitgel · 19/06/2024 12:02

yes Missmarple it's starting on Thursday, I missed the first few series so interested to watch. I love Kelly and Judy they are just so dedicated and professional. it's just another world so different from sports here. In the US everyone seems to rally around their team.

TootenCarMoon · 06/07/2024 18:29

Oh I’ll have to watch DCC too. I love it! The dance instructor is terrifying 😁
