Food that doesn't taste like it used to

What food do you miss?
I really miss the taste of proper roast chicken, baked beans, roast beef, and fresh tomatoes. None of these taste like they used to.
I have tried loads of different brands and shops and none of them are like they used to taste.

I was coming on here to say chicken! We had roast pheasant a few months back, and that, to me, tasted like roast chicken used to.

helloooitsmeee · 07/08/2023 12:37

My late Nana's hot chocolates! She only used to use the dairy milk powder but I can't get it to taste the same as I remember it tasting as a kid!

AtrociousCircumstance · 07/08/2023 12:39

Ribena. That used to taste amazing. A well timed glass of Ribena could be a real highlight! Tastes artificial now.

A roast lunch on a Sunday never tastes the same. I remember picking mint and rhubarb fron the garden for the sauce and crumble.

Cosycover · 07/08/2023 12:40

I really miss lucozade

cruffinsmuffin · 07/08/2023 12:41

Any sort of full sugar fizzy drink! So many now have aspartame in and just taste meh 😒

HarrietJet · 07/08/2023 12:42

Cheese. It doesn't even melt the way it used to.

RuthTopp · 07/08/2023 12:43

Jersey royal potatoes , apparently used to be grown via independent farmers who used seaweed as fertiliser, now grown in Jersey by a big conglomerate and no seaweed.

Seeline · 07/08/2023 12:43

Most fruit and veg. The forced stuff, flown thousands f miles available in the supermarkets just isn't the same. The lack of seasonal produce available to those that don't have access to farmer's markets etc is a real issue. We don't even have a greengrocers near us.

Sugar Puffs.

lovinglifesometimes · 07/08/2023 13:03

@Akiddleetivy2woodenchu I might give pheasant a try, I thought it would be really gamey

Chicken and mushroom pot noodles.

Sugar Puffs.

OMG yes! This was one of these things I knew was bad for me but used to buy a box occasionally because they tasted lovely. Last box I had it was like they had stripped out all the sugar or honey or something. Disgusting. Never bought them since. Still in mourning.

try guinea fowl, wonderful flavour

I agree about Jersey Royals, in the past they were incredible.

We have had Pembrokeshire new potatoes recently, they are lovely.

It's easy to grow potatoes in a bag, and nothing like harvesting your dinner.

LibertyLily · 07/08/2023 13:09

McVities digestives. The original type without chocolate. I used to love them with cheddar but now they taste awful. I remember seeing on here that M&S do some that taste the same as McV's used to but keep forgetting to pick some up.

GalileoHumpkins · 07/08/2023 13:10

Smarties, they're revolting now.

LibertyLily · 07/08/2023 13:10

And yes, I thought Jersey Royals were not as good too!

madeinmanc · 07/08/2023 13:12

Could we try growing potatoes ourselves using seaweed fertiliser, I wonder? 🤔

HighHopesHeaped · 07/08/2023 13:15

Cornetto
Quality street
Supermarket chocolate muffins
Munchies

madeinmanc · 07/08/2023 13:15

Totally agree on tomatoes, all supermarket tomatoes appear red and shiny but way too much water comes out when you cook them and they mostly lack flavour. And bizarrely, they don;t go off when they should do. Try leaving some out on the counter you'll see that they stay ripe for an unnatural length of time.

lovinglifesometimes · 07/08/2023 13:15

@ChocolateCinderToffee is that like roast chicken?

Cadbury chocolate. Christmas tinned chocolate like celebrations etc... all like licking wax.

ForTheLoveOfGrace · 07/08/2023 13:18

Twiglets!!

I know they aren't everyone cup of tea but I really miss them. They were my dad's favourite especially at Christmas and now they are rank 🤢

WineIsMyCarb · 07/08/2023 13:19

All cereal, chocolate and fizzy pop. Not convinced it has made people eat less of the stuff, judging by the nation's health, but it's all far less satisfying for us all.
