Food that doesn't taste like it used to

What food do you miss?
I really miss the taste of proper roast chicken, baked beans, roast beef, and fresh tomatoes. None of these taste like they used to.
I have tried loads of different brands and shops and none of them are like they used to taste.

Strawberries, satsumas, chicken, skittles (they've taken all the e numbers out) and KFC gravy!

LadyEloise1 · 07/08/2023 15:58

Cadbury's chocolate.

Chocolate Kimberley biscuits - they used to have a thick layer of chocolate on them now it's just some chocolate flavoured stuff. Sad

Tomatoes Tasteless
Strawberries Tasteless
Just taste wet as someone up thread said.

FawnDrench · 07/08/2023 16:12

Marmite
Cheese and onion crisps - Walkers
Ketchup
Colmans mustard
Cream crackers

I've recently discovered Lu chocolate biscuits. Crisp buttery crumbly base topped with a thick slab of lovely chocolate that tastes like chocolate should. No palm oil. Dark and milk varieties equally delicious.

JamieFrasersfurrysporran · 07/08/2023 16:23

I would kill for a decent jersey Royal covered in Lurpak

AgnesX · 07/08/2023 16:24

So many things don't taste the same. The recipes and ingredients have been changed, water added (bacon) fruit and veg force grown.

Doesn't help that your taste buds seem to change as you grow older😔

Jersey royal potatoes , apparently used to be grown via independent farmers who used seaweed as fertiliser, now grown in Jersey by a big conglomerate and no seaweed.

Quite right. No taste either :-(

LadyAstor · 07/08/2023 16:28

Anything that used to contain real sugar and high quality fat. Now, they just use Frankenstein concoctions made in a lab. The one that stands out is chocolate adulterated with palm oil.

A lot of sweets and cereal bars give me diarrhoea and wind because they contain laxative sugars (the ones that end in 'ol' mainly).

@Doratheexplorer1 Thank you!! ❤️

God yes, everything mentioned on here. Tbh most things are tasteless now. Food from years ago was so much better, it may have contained more sugar for that to happen but there were fewer obese people compared to now where every piece of food has had the flavour removed.

Chicken is the worst, doesn't matter where I buy it, it either has no taste or a gas taste off it. I've tried shops, butchers the lot. Chicken portions are the same, full of water and tasteless. Even ordered chicken in a restaurant not so long ago and had to ask for extra sauce as it was so bland, takeaways the same, chicken dishes just rubbery and bland. Chicken use to be so juicy and melt in your mouth tender with lovely crispy skin.

Did you know that your sense of smell, which is crucially linked to your ability to taste, is the first sense to deteriorate as you age?

I was thinking this, along with Covid.

Cream - single, double, whipping cream - any cream....
I can't taste it! Got some in some in for the bi-annual rhubarb pick and use. I'm gutted. The texture is there, everything is, but no taste 😭
I am gutted. I've said it twice, that's how gutted I am!

Jersey royal potatoes , apparently used to be grown via independent farmers who used seaweed as fertiliser, now grown in Jersey by a big conglomerate and no seaweed.

Not to mention the fact that they are now washed before being packed in plastic bags, so they keep for approximately 3 minutes...

I haven't bothered with them for quite a few years now, just get local earlies from the farmers' market when it's time for new potatoes.

All of the above! However, on the plus side, I have dreamt of finding Abernethy biscuits again for years and found a packet the other day. They taste just as amazing as always and I was very happy about that!

Whichwhatnow · 07/08/2023 16:54

Coco Pops. Or indeed any sugary cereal from my childhood. I understand why they've reduced the sugar content for kids who're eating it daily but for me Coco Pops/Frosties etc were a rare treat, and I very (very!) occasionally have an urge for a bowlful now for a treat as an adult. The disappointment is immense!

Cadburys chocolate 😢

Most fresh fruit and veg and meat - I mostly buy expensive organic/farm shop stuff now which I'm luckily able to do, but I swear normal supermarket stuff was far more flavoursome when I was a kid! I had some strawberries from Tesco the other day and they were like eating slightly sour water.

doris9034 · 07/08/2023 17:00

We moved to the North a couple of years ago, to a town with an amazing meat, fish and veg market where produce is fresher, cheaper and far better quality. Now we buy most stuff there - defo wouldn't ever go back to supermarket watery goo meat

Chocolatepumpkin · 07/08/2023 17:23

All chocolate it has a weird aftertaste now, sports mix and similar sweets and McDonald's fries

QueefQueen80s · 07/08/2023 17:45

Being able to smell cadburies creme eggs through the foil 😢 the chocolate was that nice. Now they taste of nothing.

3arthmama · 07/08/2023 17:52

When I moved to the UK 15 years ago I was struck by the poor quality of fresh fruit and vegetables, everything was tasteless. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house with a kitchen garden which my grandmother tended. I have very fond memories of tending the garden with her and picking lunch and dinner. My grandmother now has sadly died but my grandfather and uncle still tend the kitchen garden and I love going home and picking lunch a dinner😊

Sugaspunsista · 07/08/2023 18:19

Batternburg cake... the marzipan tastes like play doh now

dudsville · 07/08/2023 18:22

So many supposedly nice cakes and pastries just taste of sugar or sweetener. Same for chocolate.

Lagershandy · 07/08/2023 18:24

Caramac.

Dogsitterwoes · 07/08/2023 18:35

Jersey royals used to have great flavour and an amazing flaky skin. Now bland and boring.
Most veg is rubbish now, luckily I can grow some and they still taste good.

Meat - I buy less but more expensive from a local butcher or farm that sells it's own meat. Supermarket meat is shit. Bland, no fat, watery.

ilovebagpuss · 07/08/2023 19:00

Cheese (unless you pay £££)
Chicken -only buy now and again free range expensive one.
Crisps- don't know if it's oil changes but most taste of a sort of bitter oil
Potatoes
Most veg unless I go to the fancy market greengrocer who has a veg stand like the supermarkets in France and Spain have as standard.
Lots of sweets and fruit gums now "Vegan Friendly" and they don't have the chewy thing they just sort of break up yuk.
I am watching my local co-op go from a whole aisle of sweets and chocs to a half an aisle. I would love to talk to a supermarket buyer, is it Brexit or what?!
Aldi this week had got a half isle for meat, I stood looking for the pork section for ages and there was just a couple of pieces?!
Rant over.
