Food that doesn't taste like it used to

What food do you miss?
I really miss the taste of proper roast chicken, baked beans, roast beef, and fresh tomatoes. None of these taste like they used to.
I have tried loads of different brands and shops and none of them are like they used to taste.

OMG yes! This was one of these things I knew was bad for me but used to buy a box occasionally because they tasted lovely. Last box I had it was like they had stripped out all the sugar or honey or something. Disgusting. Never bought them since. Still in mourning.

co co pops too, first spoonful is ok, the rest has no taste!

PriamFarrl · 07/08/2023 19:10

I agree with Pringles. I’ve just had some green ones and they tasted of nothing.

And I’m annoyed at Fentimans too. Their dandelion and burdock used to be wonderful. Now it just tasted like Diet Coke.

Irn bru. I grieve for the old recipe!

You can buy it! The new stuff is crap.

We buy some every couple of weeks now. It's in a glass bottle and it's just perfect. Like old fashioned cream (crème?) soda.

I really miss lucozade

I honestly thought it was just me! I still enjoy it and drink it, but it is NOTHING like it used to be 🥺🥺

Bacon

May well be nostalgia harking back to the great bacon sandwiches grandad used to make - but surely there's not too many ways to cook bacon! Bacon seems quite watery now in comparison?

We buy water and nitrate free bacon from a local butcher that still behaves like bacon.

newfriend05 · 07/08/2023 19:41

Walkers crisps especially ready salted

WheresTheRemoteControl · 07/08/2023 19:41

Cornetto
All boxes of chocolate like roses quality street etc, the foil round them was much better.
Sugar puffs

Lookingatthesunset · 07/08/2023 19:44

Just about everything!!! Fruit has got so tasteless. Chips are shit. I'm cured of my lifelong addiction to crisps now because none of them taste of anything!

Marks & Spencer Cornish cruncher cheddar is good, it ain't cheap though.

Second that, it's amazing! Sainsburys also do Davidstowe. It's good too.

My late Nana's hot chocolates! She only used to use the dairy milk powder but I can't get it to taste the same as I remember it tasting as a kid!

This. We always used DM and it was delicious but now it's always just... weak and watery.

TinselAngel · 07/08/2023 20:09

Radishes that nearly burn your tongue.

Jujubes5 · 07/08/2023 20:17

They’ve bred the slight bitterness out of Brussels sprouts which went well with sweetish Turkey and cranberry sauce.

Justsaying22 · 07/08/2023 20:23

Bread.. it used to taste fresh and less synthetic.. it tastes crap these days…

NutellaEllaElla · 07/08/2023 13:26

Did you know that your sense of smell, which is crucially linked to your ability to taste, is the first sense to deteriorate as you age?

Spot on! This is why children often don't like strongly flavoured things that older adults do, ie brussel sprouts!

Rowntree's fruit gums.

They used to come in a little box at the cinema and they tasted lovely.

Now they are absolute crap.

Shaped like the fruit!

WhatcreaturemaderthishHellWEB · 07/08/2023 20:39

Bacon doesn't taste the same even butcher so called posh stuff.
Chicken... Used to to be so flavoursome.....

Then of course choclate.. Cadbury had a crisper bite and was truly creamy.. Now it's just vile slime.

Bread again event posh loaf does nt seems the e same

cheapskatemum · 07/08/2023 21:31

Have given up buying apricots, plums, cherries as they now taste of nothing.

Strawberries, even homegrown and in season they are nowhere near as good as they used to be. I remember vividly the first strawberry I ever picked and ate. I couldn’t have been more than 5 years old. It was on my aunt’s farm in Ireland and it was fat and juicy and tasted of the summer.

There's so many different varieties of strawberries. It may have been one native to that area

There is a brand of Bacon on Ocado which claims to not have any added water?

Cadbury's chocolate. It no longer melts in your mouth like chocolate should. You end up chewing what feels like a lump of over-sweet wax. Chocolate should not need chewing FFS.

Melts perfectly fine for me? I've never had to chew Cadburys chocolate.

Nitgel · 07/08/2023 22:01

Galaxy chocolate

GrumpyOldCrone · 07/08/2023 22:35

I lost most of my sense of smell/taste with covid so I depend on texture and consistency for food pleasure. And I’m not quite a good enough cook to compensate. So everything tastes a bit shit these days.

But I second (or nineteenth) the criticism of Cadburys chocolate. Even before I lost my sense of taste I’d given up on it. I still like the chocolate I get in Aldi and Lidl.

madeinmanc · 07/08/2023 22:48

To the people missing Cadbury's, I remember reading that the Irish stuff is still made to the same recipe as ours used to be. I remember finding some on Irish eBay but I never actually went ahead and bought it. This was a few years ago, mind you, so I don't know if it would still be true.

Twiglets!!

I know they aren't everyone cup of tea but I really miss them. They were my dad's favourite especially at Christmas and now they are rank 🤢

Agree! They taste burnt now so disappointing. Always had a tub for Christmas not any more.

Freddie frogs, flake, animal bars and possibly twirl are all from Ireland and taste the same.
