Food that doesn't taste like it used to

What food do you miss?
I really miss the taste of proper roast chicken, baked beans, roast beef, and fresh tomatoes. None of these taste like they used to.
I have tried loads of different brands and shops and none of them are like they used to taste.

Kitkats! I don't see that Cadburys's chocolate has changed that much, it's still (far too) edible for me. But Kitkats are just vile now, completely tasteless chocolate and overly sweet wafer filling. Bought a 14 pack recently and had to donate them elsewhere!

CornishGem1975 · 07/08/2023 13:21

@Poochypaws Yep. I still crave a bowl but they were absolutely disgusting.

GrumpyPanda · 07/08/2023 13:22

Lamb lettuce and white asparagus. Fucking Dutch hybrids have had the last trace of bitterness out of them, now it's all just like overpriced water.

Chicken - not my experience but we've got a poultry specialist locally who imports "label rouge" chicken from Alsace. I wouldn't dare buy a roasting chicken from a supermarket.

With processed food there’s nothing you can do but tomatoes, chicken etc it’s generally just a matter of finding the right varieties and producers and paying twice as much….probably more than twice as much in the case of a slow grown organic chicken.
My mum was convinced she had lost the art of making pork crackle but really it was just the producers were rearing pork with less fat under the skin and you could no longer take it for granted that something bought as a roasting joint would work like it used to.

Coco pops. I think they must have reduced the sugar. Even my kids don't bother with them these days. It's for the best, I know, but it was just a little treat to mark the beginning of school hols a few times a year.

NutellaEllaElla · 07/08/2023 13:26

Did you know that your sense of smell, which is crucially linked to your ability to taste, is the first sense to deteriorate as you age?

Cheese. It doesn't even melt the way it used to.

Marks & Spencer Cornish cruncher cheddar is good, it ain't cheap though.

Inaworldmadeofsteel · 07/08/2023 13:27

Fentiman’s Curiosity Cola. I used to love this as it reminded me of cola from my childhood but they have recently replaced the sugar with stevia and it’s absolutely foul.

sausageboxer · 07/08/2023 13:28

This is quite specific but Kallos rice crispies used to be great but I can't take them out of the packet anymore without them falling into crumbly little pieces. Bleugh.

Re the chocolate wars I think Cadburys and Nestlé have both gone down hill.

Chicken is pointless at 60% water nowadays.

Tesco own brand tea bags have taken a turn for the worse.

Coco pops and cornflakes.

EmmaOvary · 07/08/2023 13:29

Findus Crispy pancakes. Capri Sun.

CapEBarra · 07/08/2023 13:29

Strawberries, even homegrown and in season they are nowhere near as good as they used to be. I remember vividly the first strawberry I ever picked and ate. I couldn’t have been more than 5 years old. It was on my aunt’s farm in Ireland and it was fat and juicy and tasted of the summer.

madeinmanc · 07/08/2023 13:30

@Inaworldmadeofsteel Oh no! Fentiman's was the last hold out, I can't believe they've caved in.

Busubaba · 07/08/2023 13:31

Rowntree's fruit gums.

They used to come in a little box at the cinema and they tasted lovely.

Now they are absolute crap.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/08/2023 13:37

Completely agree about Jersey Royal potatoes. But at least they are better than some other new potatoes (I'm looking at you M&S) which have no flavour whatsoever.

Ritz and Tuc crackers don't taste the same any more - they've reduced the amount of salt.

Ribena. It gives me the rage that there is sweetener in the "full fat" version now. They already have a light and extra light variety for those who want that - leave the fucking original recipe alone!!

Heartbreaktuna · 07/08/2023 13:44

Irn bru. I grieve for the old recipe!

Inaworldmadeofsteel · 07/08/2023 13:45

madeinmanc Yep, seems they’ve followed all the rest like sheep! I contacted their customer service department but they couldn’t give a toss!

TodayInahurry · 07/08/2023 13:46

Jersey potatoes, I used to live there. There are a few growers who use seaweed, but they sell at the roadside to locals. Bartlet took over and the potatoes are mass produced, sprayed pretty much daily, harvested and then washed and put into plastic bags. That is why they taste like all the others. I used to live surrounded by potato fields.

TodayInahurry · 07/08/2023 13:48

My pet hate is Cadbury’s milk chocolate, it tastes vile now, all sugar and no chocolate. Still I have stopped earring it and am not tempted when I buy petrol

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 07/08/2023 13:51

Kellogg Coco pops. Had some yesterday and they taste bloody shite now

MmePoppySeedDefage · 07/08/2023 13:53

For well-flavoured chicken, try an M&S organic one, or, a recent discovery, Sainsbury's Black leg chicken. Neither of them is cheap – but, sadly, you get what you pay for. Ordinary chicken has absolutely no flavour in my experience.

happyinherts · 07/08/2023 13:54

Bacon

May well be nostalgia harking back to the great bacon sandwiches grandad used to make - but surely there's not too many ways to cook bacon! Bacon seems quite watery now in comparison?

Andanotherone01 · 07/08/2023 13:55

Mine is all junk food but occasionally we crave a bit and just can't get the flavours of yester-year:
Soft drinks - how I miss full sugar soft drinks
Christmas Chocolates - all waxy palm oil now
Pringles
McDonalds fries - why are they so soggy and tasteless now?

Crikeyalmighty · 07/08/2023 13:56

I get chicken from the good farm shop- pay about £13 but they taste fantastic- exactly like they used to and are meatier than cheap supermarket ones- although M&S higher welfare ones are decent too

Robinbuildsbears · 07/08/2023 13:56

Coco pops. Bought a box a year ago and was convinced that it was a stale OOD box. But apparently that's just what they're supposed to be like now.

Fizzy drinks with all the sweeteners added even if it's still got sugar. The M&S 1lt bottles of lemonade is the only lemonade I'll tolerate now.

You won’t be imagining it, it will literally be that you are buying bacon with water added to bulk it up.
Try a farmers’ market.
