Food that doesn't taste like it used to

What food do you miss?
I really miss the taste of proper roast chicken, baked beans, roast beef, and fresh tomatoes. None of these taste like they used to.
I have tried loads of different brands and shops and none of them are like they used to taste.

Our local Morrisons has the Irish Cadbury bars in the international food aisle.

Where do you buy the original Irn Bru in glass bottles?

It’s called 1901 (or something like that) you can get it on Ocado.

@Andanotherone01 Home Bargains have the Iron Bru 1901 on and off. Fairy often but not so much that you could go and know it's there, if you see what I mean.

Schweppes tonic water. A few years ago the diet version was fine. Now it's no-calorie it's bloody awful. I use the Aldi diet version which is not as good as the old Schweppes, but OK.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/08/2023 13:55

@doris9034 the same round here in Bath with the farm shops - some of it is £££££ but other stuff quite reasonable for far better quality.

madeinmanc · 09/08/2023 14:53

*Fairly often

@HarrietJet I have two for you. Cathedral City Vintage, now renamed "our strongest cheese" and Waitrose Cornish. Only if you like strong cheese.

TheMousePipes · 09/08/2023 15:18

Jersey royals are nowhere near what they used to be. In France this year we bought Noirmoutier potatoes in the market - they were delicious, like Jersey royals used to taste.
Teissiere syrup is our only squash these days - I hate soft drinks with sweetener in them, it tastes foul and makes my teeth feel wierd.

I get the Iron Bru 1901 from Sainsbury's

Second/thirding the Irish Cadburys reccomendation. We stock up whenever we are back home. You can buy Caramellos in bulk from Amazon if you have (a lot of) self control.

Oh, cheers! I'll give them a go 👍

They do an orange crisp bar that is absolutely divine.

Peanut butter . So bland these days.

The older you get, the notes of your tastebuds die, that's why it doesn't taste as good

lollipoprainbow · 09/09/2023 10:12

Baked beans

Britpopbaby · 09/09/2023 16:56

Chicken and mushroom pot noodles.

Buy a packet of the cheapest chicken stock cubes that a supermarket sells, and crumble half a cube into the pot then add the water.

Voila - all the bad, but tasty stuff they took out is back! You may want to have a pint of water on standby though! Thank me later for this dirty, dirty walk down memory lane 😁

McVities digestives. The original type without chocolate. I used to love them with cheddar but now they taste awful. I remember seeing on here that M&S do some that taste the same as McV's used to but keep forgetting to pick some up.

You could try the Hovis branded digestives. I think they used to be included in the cheese biscuits selection box. Butter first.

Jersey royal potatoes , apparently used to be grown via independent farmers who used seaweed as fertiliser, now grown in Jersey by a big conglomerate and no seaweed.

i haven’t had any for a while, but I used to find that Cyprus potatoes - bought from Cypriot greengrocers - were a good substitute for Jersey Royals. I live in London so it is easy to find a Cypriot greengrocer.

Kitkats! I don't see that Cadburys's chocolate has changed that much, it's still (far too) edible for me. But Kitkats are just vile now, completely tasteless chocolate and overly sweet wafer filling. Bought a 14 pack recently and had to donate them elsewhere!

Yes, totally agree. When the foil packaging was replaced so was the taste.

fridaynight1 · 26/10/2023 13:37

If there is one thing I miss more than anything it is Lucozade. The new version is just vile .

And I agree with the chicken pps - it just doesn’t taste of chicken anymore. Where has the chicken taste gone 🙁

I really miss lucozade

I can't drink it at all now, but I used to love it as a kid, did try it as an adult, what the hell did they do to it?! It's vile! And as for the flavoured ones? Just no!
