Food that doesn't taste like it used to

What food do you miss?
I really miss the taste of proper roast chicken, baked beans, roast beef, and fresh tomatoes. None of these taste like they used to.
I have tried loads of different brands and shops and none of them are like they used to taste.

Baked beans and jersey royals for sure!

andymary · 07/08/2023 14:20

Tomatoes - Watery nothingness.
Apples - Tastes like old rubbish bins and sewage (maybe just a symptom of long Covid?)
Roast Chicken Breast / Whole Chicken - Doesn't taste of anything unless covered in some kind of sauce or herb mix.

Most Chocolate, especially Cadburys and Nestle has that bland, sweet waxy taste. I'll still eat it but it's not the same. I had a Kitkat the other day and it didn't taste like it used to.

Irn bru. I grieve for the old recipe!

You can buy the original 1902 recipe ones in most supermarkets and amazon 😊

MoonsHaunted · 07/08/2023 14:51

Hula Hoops and Pringles

GigiAnnna · 07/08/2023 14:53

Does anyone remember the old Greggs veg pasties? They were delicious. They changed the recipe to a horrible sicky cheese one but they used to be potato based and were a bit spicy with a bit of a kick to them.

McVities digestives. The original type without chocolate. I used to love them with cheddar but now they taste awful. I remember seeing on here that M&S do some that taste the same as McV's used to but keep forgetting to pick some up.

This is the snack/treat of champions. So so good, if you can get the right biscuits of course.

What has happened to make everything taste different?

Elderflower14 · 07/08/2023 14:57

Just bought a jar of Roses Lime Marmalade.... Its changed from when I last bought a jar. Not nearly so Lime tasting!!

Fruit in general, tasteless nothingness particularly apples just like eating crunchy water, I rarely bother with fruit much I don’t believe there can be many nutrients in fruit that tastes of nothing apart from fibre.

thenightsky · 07/08/2023 15:04

Cadbury's chocolate. It no longer melts in your mouth like chocolate should. You end up chewing what feels like a lump of over-sweet wax. Chocolate should not need chewing FFS.

Augustus40 · 07/08/2023 15:06

Green and Black organic dark chocolate tastes fine.

I was having this conversation with my son yesterday funny enough. We’d gone out for lunch and my dessert had a strawberry on it and I couldn’t believe it, it actually tasted stayed like a strawberry, not a watered down version if you get what I mean. It then got me reminiscing and taking about eating at my Grandparents, things that came to mind in particular, that don’t taste like they used to were particularly tomatoes, cucumber and new potatoes.

I totally agree I barely buy it now as it’s such a disappointment not to mention expensive!

GoodnightJude1 · 07/08/2023 15:21

Twiglets….they used to my favourite snack and now they taste like tough cardboard 😩

Wine Gums don’t taste the same to me either….

WhosTHATgirllala · 07/08/2023 15:21

Sunny D. That stuff used to hit the spot when I were younger, now it's so tasteless.

notprincehamlet · 07/08/2023 15:26

Most fruit and veg
This! It's hard to tell the difference between a potato and a watermelon! Was in France recently and everything tasted, well, real (and had a reassuring amount of bugs). Also 3 delicious charentais melons for 5 euros - they're £3.20 each here and just taste wet.

happysunr1se · 07/08/2023 15:27

I think for fruit and veg, the growers favour varieties that are pest and disease resistant, have good colour, use less water or space, grow faster, bigger etc.

The flavour is less important to them because consumers buy then when they look good and then forget that the flavour is disappointing.

Lemon1111 · 07/08/2023 15:27

Fruit pastilles, they used to be my favourite :(

Jersey royal potatoes , apparently used to be grown via independent farmers who used seaweed as fertiliser, now grown in Jersey by a big conglomerate and no seaweed.

i wondered why tasted of nothing

MoonsHaunted · 07/08/2023 15:31

Oh yeah and Rolos! Little brown lumps of sadness.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 07/08/2023 15:32

We grow quite a lot in our garden which isn't massive but the difference in taste in any fruit and veg is immense. Strawberries are easy to grow in a hanging basket likewise tumbling Tom cherry tomatoes. I also grow potatoes in a couple of old compost bags. I find broccoli quite easy to grow too but it takes a bit of space. Lettuce is dead easy to grow in a pot on a windowsill and herbs as well. We're very lucky that we have a friend with hens, amazing eggs from them that taste totally different to shop bought.

I find so many things have changed flavour for the worse these days. But fully appreciate the bit of garden that we have

What has happened to make everything taste different?

Biscuits/sweets/cereal it's the reduction of sugar and replacement with vile sweeteners.

I'll get flamed for this but if people had a bit of self-control and didn't let their kids eat so much sugary crap (you know, like saying 'no' once in a while), obesity wouldn't be such a problem and these companies wouldn't be forced to change their recipes.

But that's for another thread. Spoils it for the rest of us.

Vesta chow mein, I think they took out the salt and whatever E numbers made it taste like delicious crap, now it just tastes like crap.
So disappointing.

Ribena. That used to taste amazing. A well timed glass of Ribena could be a real highlight! Tastes artificial now.

Rocks Blackcurrent juice tastes just like old fashioned Ribena. ♥️
