Really I am done with it..where I am it has rained every day (bar literally two days) since the beginning of July plus it's been windy and cool and now the nights are getting darker earlier it just feels gloomy! And it's not even (just) August yet.
Feel so sorry for kids on the school holidays and parents trying to cope. It's just pants.

It’s the dull greyness that gets me. No light. Plus being cold. It’s barely worth having summer clothes. I’ve been in a winter jumper today.

starrynight19 · 31/07/2023 23:16

Feel so sorry for all of you who are trying to attempt a holiday in this weather , especially camping. It’s more of an endurance task than a break.
Also feel for those whose trade relies on summer and the sunshine , what a washout.

Gymnopedie · 31/07/2023 23:18

The last time I remember a summer this bad was 2004.

I don't have an astonishing memory and I had to look up the year, but I remember on yet another lashing it down day listening to 5live and hearing Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson winning badminton silver at the Olympics.

In some part of the UK the rain has been too much. As a PP mentioned, this isn't good for crops anymore. I don't have to water the garden, true - but a lot of the flower stems have bent over in the force of the wind and rain and the petals have gone brown and mushy. Branches have snapped off trees. And while some news outlets are saying we'll get sun for the second half of August the Met Office are saying don't get your hopes up.

Agree with @starrynight19

I bought a fire pit at the end of June. The next day the weather turned to shit and it's been sat in its box unused since then. Bah.

I also bought a fire pit for the garden, still sitting in the boot of my car along with the impulse buy hot tub 🫣 the weather has just been awful. Drying clothes is no fun either .. I've lost count the amount of times mine have been on the line and got soaked! Finding things to do inside all the time over the summer holidays is wearing thin now ..

Crikeyalmighty · 31/07/2023 23:25

@Harebell22 I bought a load of patio furniture- the wicker sofas kind in mid June- we've used it 3 times (all in June)

Twilight7777 · 31/07/2023 23:27

I’m sick of it too, can’t do anything outside cos the weather is so unreliable, it actually feels like September early October weather not almost august.

Midnightpumpkin · 31/07/2023 23:28

Also sick of this weather I'll join in for a moan. We can't afford to go on holiday (our usual caravan holiday has almost doubled) this year so I had the bright Idea of buying a second hand climbing frame / slide / swing combo for the garden and I thought it'd be a great if we could potter sorting the garden in the six weeks. The garden currently resembles a mud bath. Everywhere indoors is too expensive and all the outdoor free events are being cancelled. :(

Twilight7777 · 31/07/2023 23:38

Also forgot to add, it’s definitely setting my SAD off early too 😞

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/07/2023 23:42

I completely agree
It feels autumnal here today

VeryGoodVeryNice · 31/07/2023 23:43

My solar lights in my garden came on about an hour before it got dark yesterday, because it was so gloomy and shit they obviously thought it was dark.

The only positive is that I haven't had to bother to shave my legs.

reesewithoutaspoon · 31/07/2023 21:51

Yeah its shit. Feels like summer was just those 2 weeks in June.

@reesewithoutaspoon that's pretty much the majority of 'summers' in the UK.

Begsthequestion · 31/07/2023 23:54

@UserRose and anyone else on here that uses a SAD lamp - is there any particular one you recommend?

I think I'm gonna have to get one for myself soon.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 31/07/2023 23:59

I've had my heating on the last few days. Driving home from work tonight, was so grey and miserable. Normally as I come down the road into the town I live. I can see right out to the horizon of the sea. Tonight I could barely even make out the town it was that dull. The weeds in my garden seem to be loving it though. I swear those fuckers get bigger every time I look outside

crazeekat · 01/08/2023 00:29

i'm so fking depressed over it; i'm now off for the last two weeks
of school hols (scotland) and the weather is ruining everything. i know there's no bad weather just bad clothing but come on, it's just been so depressing and the sun really does make that much difference to how your day pans out. have been looking for days hear and there but everything fun we would do all depends on the damn weather being good. sure
we can go paddleboarding in the rain but sooo not the same . sorry i'm a moan but in fking sick of it. and i just know as soon as i go back to work we are gonna get a heatwave. Angry

hilariousnamehere · 01/08/2023 00:29

Joining the whinge because I had to drive to the post office in my big snuggly cardigan today so the parcels I was posting didn't get soaked while I was walking. Found myself shivering at my desk hence the cardigan.

Every outdoor shoot I've had in the diary has been bollocksed by the weather, and all the events I sell at in the summer have been disastrous or cut short or totally empty due to the rain. Not to mention my sodding gazebo which is still in the garden trying to dry out from an event on 22 July 😭

I am hopeful August will be better and grateful for a space to rant!

crazeekat · 01/08/2023 00:30

Lifesapurpledream · 31/07/2023 21:43

Me too. I usually am really into gardening but have just completely lost interest as I’ve barely been in it. Doubt much is going to ripen in the greenhouse and all my tender plants have been destroyed by pests. Have two under 5 and all the indoor activities are rammed due to school holidays and with the rain and wind combo outdoor activities are just no fun. Soaking swings and slides. Lying listening to the rain hammer on the velux. It feels almost autumnal. I’m in Scotland and the winter seemed to stretch on forever, even most of May was rubbish, until we got two glorious weeks in June and now this.

i really feel ur pain, in east coast scotland and i'm just sooo fed up of it all

Harebell22 · 01/08/2023 00:40

I've bought myself a couple of mountain warehouse thermal fleecy tops, they arrived today, I put one on immediately and it stayed on all day...I may live in them until spring I fear

BrightLightTonight · 31/07/2023 22:42

Absolutely - but still preferring it to the relentless heat of last year. Hay crops will be better, last year nothing grew.

I’m surprised you are wearing coats and hats - yes its wet, but it’s not cold. I’m wearing tea-shirts

Maybe we don't all live where you are... 🙄🙄🙄

It's 11c here right now. It's been below 17c all day. My feet are currently like blocks of ice. Waiting for the kettle to boil so I can fill my hot water bottle! In August!

It's a shit summer and it's making me dread winter!

QuestionableMouse · 01/08/2023 01:36

Also lots of the land round here is clay and the relentless rain means a lot of it is mud already! The horses at work are being kept in quite a bit because the winter fields are just now recovering but they poaching the summer ones!

GreenwichOrTwicks · 01/08/2023 01:42

Thank you for this thread!!!! I work in a school and was so looking forward to the holidays having worked through the few sunny warm days in June! Only solace is that I was in Italy last week when it was too hot -assumed when I can back that my garden would be parched but it is green and growing (thothe wind has blown down several climbing roses and the bus all look sodden and yes the slugs!!!!)
Music festival here in Twickenham yesterday was a total washout ☹️☹️☹️)

Roselilly36 · 01/08/2023 02:33

So fed up of the bad weather. Just no end in sight. Can’t dry washing. Off to the coast soon hopefully the weather will cheer up abit, but not holding my breath.
