Really I am done with it..where I am it has rained every day (bar literally two days) since the beginning of July plus it's been windy and cool and now the nights are getting darker earlier it just feels gloomy! And it's not even (just) August yet.
Feel so sorry for kids on the school holidays and parents trying to cope. It's just pants.

It probably depends on the kids but mine just whinge if you take them to a wet park for example. I wouldn't mind if they enjoyed the puddlesuit experience, I'd suck it up and let them have fun but they don't.

This is all bringing back all that shitty advice people gave during lockdown.

NashvilleQueen · 01/08/2023 07:09

Don the wellies and get out there! Don't let the weather get you down. Just embrace it. I need to get out walking for mental health reasons and I have several children so I need to get out. We do woodland walks. It's very liberating being the only daftie out walking in this type of weather 😂

Yeah this is fun once maybe. Im sure the novelty wears off after the 30th consecutive day.

My DC are all used to it, been going out rainy walks for years and no one complains as we go where there are flying foxes, tree swings etc. They know they get something out of it. It's not all bad. The dog loves romping about in mud too.

kessiebird · 01/08/2023 07:14

I'm with you OP. Not once this year have I proclaimed "it's gonna be a hottie" first thing in the morning. I'm in the North of England so we are talking high 20s when I say that. June hit 25 here once. We had two days of extreme heat last summer where it hit 38 (18th and 19th of July if I recall correctly) . The rest of last summer was lovely.

The thought of summer gets me through the winter. We aren't off abroad but I'd spent ages painting the decking and planting nice planters with a plan to sit / work outside most days. Some of the flowers haven't opened yet.

The gardeners we use are losing hours of work sat in their van, waiting for a gap in the rain. They are working until 7pm most nights as its taking them much longer to finish jobs.

We have a huge green outside the house and we put up a swing for all the kids to use. There's very few kids playing out in the village I live in. Even our ice cream van hasn't been round!

I'm just generally most cheery when it's sunny and warm.

NashvilleQueen · 01/08/2023 07:20

I'm sure you mean well but it's not cutting it with me I'm afraid. This weather makes me profoundly sad and I just want a break from it.

Very happy for this to be the default in the other 10 months of the year in this miserable part of the country but right now I would like to be gardening or sitting listening to the birds or reading in the sun so donning wellies and a cheery demeanour is just not going to work.

BarrelOfOtters · 01/08/2023 07:22

We had a miserable long winter, 3 weeks of loveliness and it’s been crappy mostly since then, especially at the weekends. The dog is miserable, until you take her to a river and she jumps straight in.

I had so many plans for the garden, it’s too wet to get out there and weed or plant.

And I stubbed my toe on the hammock I bought that hasn’t even been out of its box…

no summer holidays booked as going away for 3 weeks in November.

Vettrianofan · 01/08/2023 07:24

I live in Scotland so don't expect any hot weather. Different outlook, I suppose 🤷🏻

Getting my SAD lamp out in the morning two months earlier than usual !

Me too 😭. Also going to ring the doctor to try to get my Sertraline prescription increased. Between the weather and the cost of living crisis I’m struggling to go on. I know that will sound ridiculous to some but it’s just my biology. I’m on annual leave this week to try to give DS some sort of fun this holiday but I can’t think of anything to do with a 14 year old that’s free and indoors. We joined the gym yesterday which we can’t really afford just so we can leave the house. DS has been asking for a while and I need to exercise for my mental health. DH has just put BBC news on and fucking hell, it’s all depressing!

SecretVictoria · 01/08/2023 07:38

Sick to death of it, live Greater Manchester. Looking out the window today, there’s a hint of sun, everything is still soaked from the non-stop rain yesterday and it looks really windy. Great 🙄. It’s also 14 degrees, it’s been warmer in December!

Its just nicer when it’s sunny and warm. I’m in a much better mood than with this constant pissing rain and low temps. I walked from the car park to my workplace last Thursday and my coat was still drying out hours later. It’s ridiculous and depressing.

‘Rainy walks’ are no fun either, nor is having to dry a wet dog twice a day. I wish to god I had another holiday coming up.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 01/08/2023 07:43

Oh god. The cheery 'just put on waterproofs and splash in the puddles' stuff is as annoying as those comatose hot-chocolate-drinking blanket-snugglers.

I don't think it's totally unreasonable to express a wish for a bit of sunshine. I don't want to wear waterproofs all summer and slop through mud pretending it's all fucking marvellous and let's make a lovely den from these soaking wet bloody sticks, darlings. I want to sit in the sunshine with my book.

Indeed and I can't just put on waterproofs because they are still inevitably wet from the last time we ventured out of the house and got soaked to our skin by yet another bloody downpour.

Aren't they just. Currently 12 degrees here, and not raining - yet.

Your own mileage may vary but the BBC weather page has some hope for later in August for the Midlands....

I love the winter, long for late October and everything dark and chilly. Too much heat makes me miserable and I hate sweating.
That said though this rain is taking the piss. I have managed 1 Park trip so far this holiday and even then i had to take towels to dry off equipment and dodge the showers.
I am glued to the met office rain map trying to work out whether we can make it to certain destinations and back without getting drenched. We have rainwear but it's so sticky and sweaty. Where I am today looks OK and Friday looks dry so far other than that 🌧. I am thinking it's going to have to be a holiday of crafts and having friends round.

Karmatime · 01/08/2023 08:10

Mmm the BBC forecast has been offering false hope for weeks now. That run of suns keeps getting pushed further down the line.

Sorry - but I’m loving it. Working full time, it’s not too hot, the grass is growing well (have horses so this is important), don’t have to water the garden daily, can sleep at night without overheating. It’s not cold, so you can do outdoor activities. What’s not to love - especially when the alternative was like last summer when it was far too hot to move and we had fires all over the place

Couldn’t disagree more- I have a horse with EMS to manage so grass growth is the last thing I need, it’s like perpetual autumn here. Weather has been too shit to ride much a lot of the time-no lovely long summer hacks.

Mud everywhere, gateways are boggy - I’ve got the pig oil out again. It’s horrid.

TheChosenTwo · 01/08/2023 08:22

Yep, another one rejecting the idea of going out and splashing in puddles. My dc are older teens and 11. They’d most likely just push me into the first one, turn around and go home again! I can see you may have more success if your kids are small and have a zest for life. Mine aren’t zesty about wet weather.
very grateful that we are abroad for the last 2 weeks of august. I’ve taken a few days off here and there over the first 4 weeks of the holidays with a view to having picnics and a paddle in the river, a couple of day trips to the seaside and to top golf (you can do this one in the rain at least) and organising a wider family day at a place you can bbq and play games etc on the field. None of those things are enjoyable in the downpours.
So yesterday we went and did the school uniform shopping and had lunch out.
Today though it’s actually bright and sunshiney (obviously I am working and my youngest is booked into football camp), we are going to have a bbq tonight and play some swingball. Happy to take the small wins!

I don't mind it, its still mild. Yes it's grey but I don't need to worry about my daughter burning. Doing anything outside and judt fling on weather appropriate clothing.

This is the weather I remember from childhood summers, 30 or 35 years ago.
Change your attitude and embrace it all will be fine.

@Marchitectmummy

nah the weather is shit and no amount of positive attitude or different mindset or whatever is gonna change that
If it’s pissing it down, it’s pissing it down

RampantIvy · 01/08/2023 08:23

It's official. I live in the top third rainiest areas.

WomanAtWork · 01/08/2023 08:25

Sympathy, although I prefer cool weather to roasting at 40 degrees. However I agree it is a shame and life is more expensive when summer is cold as you end up paying to do indoor activities. Whereas usually we are just in the park every day, playing in the paddling pool if there is no hosepipe ban, having picnics, etc.

i just got back from a few weeks in Belgium and the Netherlands - it was fairly damp there too but at least it was warmer - I don’t mind being rained on so much when the temperature is still above 20 degrees! We had opted for a mobile home, did feel sorry for the people on our campsite who were in tents as we had one night of torrential rain, they can’t have had a lot of sleep that night.

Of course you can go out in cool, rainy, windy, dull weather - living in Britain we get to do that all year round but I don't think its that unreasonable to hope for some dry...maybe even warm...weather in the months that are generally known as summer.

I've got teens and I've mainly been working throughout July but entertaining young children is often more expensive in poor weather. Of course you can still go to a farm, for a walk, possibly an outdoor play area but it's likely to be for only part of the day , or need to go somewhere indoors for lunch rather than a picnic. And I feel bad for people who's business relies on more pleasant summer weather!

Of course I'm relieved we haven't got 40°c temps and wildfires but there's a massive range of weather in between that wouldn't be unusual for July/August
(I have a day off - I haven't even opened the curtains yet but I can hear the wind, and can tell its dull ... so August not yet an improvement)

You have my sympathy. I love how far down the list London features, I strongly suspect that's where a lot of those who can't see the problem, think we should stop whining and just get on with it and who think there's no such thing as bad weather etc live.

I doubt they would be quite so enthused if they were higher up the list and got more rain.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 01/08/2023 08:37

I live in a village near the 3rd rainiest city in England 🙈. I’ve gone back to bed, even the dog keeps going to the back door and crying (he has been out for a wee). I’ve been looking forward to this week of annual leave for months 😭.
