What the hell am I going to do ? URGENT

Going abroad tomorrow. Today, I have what feels like the start of a UTI. Namely, peeing a lot & a constant dull urge to pee. No blood/pain/discomfort as yet. Dr did a dip test today and was all clear, so wouldn't prescribe antibiotics. This is how the last UTI started, when the dip test showed nothing then 12 hours later I was calling the out of hours DR with blood in urine and severe discomfort. Fortunately for that occurrence, I managed to get antibiotics.

Ive now potentially got to travel tomorrow with the constant need to pee. How the hell am I going to do that. I will be abroad (Spain) - what if I need antibiotics ? Not so easy to get ?

WHAT TO DO ?

I have debated calling the out of hours DR tonight, exaggerating the symptoms, and getting antibiotics prescribed over the phone. I'm so worried as the last UTI started in this way ie dip was clear but needing to pee a hell of a lot and it turned into a full blown UTI.

Any advice ?

Go on holiday. Pee whenever you need to. There are plenty of English speaking doctors in Spain if you need them.

FrenchBean7 · 31/07/2023 20:19

Late night pharmacy? They can prescribe antibiotics - say symptoms have got worse?

idealworld897 · 31/07/2023 20:20

I'm having my hair cut tomorrow morning before leaving for holiday, I won't even be able to have that without needing to go. How can I sit in a car for a 40 minute taxi when I arrive on holiday.

You can buy antibiotics for cystitis from Lloyds pharmacy or Superdrug - order them online.

I can usually head off cystitis by doing the following, but fair warning I do this as soon as I start getting it. It may be too late to work for you.

I drink a pint of water every half hour for 2-3 hours. You will pee like anything. I then drop it down to one every hour and keep that up for at least half the day. I mix in a bit of baking soda into a half-pint and include that too, to take the edge off, but don't do this anymore than twice a day or else I find it messes with your electrolyte balance.

Essentially I flush it out before it has the chance to get established.

Have you drunk GALLONS op?

What about the sachets from the chemist- it may head it off at the pass.

Hope you feel better soon xx

LittleMonks11 · 31/07/2023 20:22

Try buying some D Mannose fizzy tablets from Holland and Barrett. You can buy a course of a antibiotics from Boots.

Pipiestrelle · 31/07/2023 20:22

Plenty of lemon barley water (correct pH balance), cranberry capsules, painkillers, hot water bottle in your suitcase. It used to be the case that ABs could be bought over the counter in Spain, but I’m not sure it still is.

Use a local pharmacy UTI service in the morning. There is no need to trouble your GP with a UTI if you are a female aged between 16 & 64 with no other relevant medical history.

Great advice. Saves me writing the same xx

I'd do your plan. You know it's going to descend into needing antibiotics so get them just in case by exaggerating current symptoms. Then if you end up not needing them save them for the inevitable next time. My sympathies. UTIs suck.

Ilikewinter · 31/07/2023 20:26

Yep get online to either Boots or Superdrug. Order now and it will be ready to collect in the morning. Drink tons of water tonight and pee when you need. Good luck OP 🤞

greenteaandmarshmallows · 31/07/2023 20:27

Have you got insurance?

Flipflopflopflip · 31/07/2023 20:27

Depending on where you're going it will probably be easier to get antibiotics abroad, I did one holiday, just have them out in the chemist

Sittingonthefence83 · 31/07/2023 20:27

I second Lloyd Pharmacy or Superdrug online, go online now and order them and hopefully you can get them at some point tomorrow, you may have to cancel hair appointment to get them otherwise it could ruin your holiday!

When I get UTI's I always have to get antibiotics they never go away with just water etc

carmelK · 31/07/2023 20:28

Either do as you said and exaggerate symptoms so that you can get some antibiotics to take with you (I would say wait before actually taking them though, just see if you need them, pack them for peace of mind) OR relax knowing that Spain is a great place to get antibiotics. I'm sure you can even buy them over the counter without prescription there? Or used to be able to! But if not you will be able to get them.
And in mean time drink loads of water, comfy pants on and hope it passes over

ScarletWitchM · 31/07/2023 20:29

You need to flush it out. Drink as much water as you can and pee it out. I’ve tried cranberry etc and it doesn’t help really - loads and loads of water is the only way. You will need to pass it all out!

GiddyGladys · 31/07/2023 20:29

If you ask really nicely the pharmacist will give you antibiotics over the counter in Spain.

User6424678852 · 31/07/2023 20:29

Order then ABs online for pick up tomorrow, but only use them if it gets worse

Mutabiliss · 31/07/2023 20:32

I found rehydration salts (like for after stomach bug) helpful when I couldn't get antibiotics before. Also D Mannose is in Boots now.

Purplepinkfairy · 31/07/2023 20:34

Please ensure you have travel insurance. Am just home from Spain. Had to get dr to our hotel for my husband. Cost of visit 550 euros.

BusySittingDown · 31/07/2023 20:36

Get those powder sachets. You can get them at the pharmacy or supermarket. I've got them a few times and they've cleared it up before the need for antibiotics.

This has saved me twice. Good luck OP

You should be able to order to this to the Boots at the airport if you need.

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 31/07/2023 20:38

It’s worth bearing in mind that dip tests are out of date and horribly inaccurate, missing as many as half of all infections. Get the antibiotics OP. And for the future, I swear by something called Bladapure (from Holland and Barrett) which is D-Mannose, cranberry powder and various minerals. It prevents infections by stopping bacteria sticking to the bladder wall.
