What the hell am I going to do ? URGENT

Going abroad tomorrow. Today, I have what feels like the start of a UTI. Namely, peeing a lot & a constant dull urge to pee. No blood/pain/discomfort as yet. Dr did a dip test today and was all clear, so wouldn't prescribe antibiotics. This is how the last UTI started, when the dip test showed nothing then 12 hours later I was calling the out of hours DR with blood in urine and severe discomfort. Fortunately for that occurrence, I managed to get antibiotics.

Ive now potentially got to travel tomorrow with the constant need to pee. How the hell am I going to do that. I will be abroad (Spain) - what if I need antibiotics ? Not so easy to get ?

WHAT TO DO ?

I have debated calling the out of hours DR tonight, exaggerating the symptoms, and getting antibiotics prescribed over the phone. I'm so worried as the last UTI started in this way ie dip was clear but needing to pee a hell of a lot and it turned into a full blown UTI.

Any advice ?

You will get better care abroad. Go on holiday.

you might have to pay to see a doctor but may be able to claim it back using insurance. Good luck.

I'm having my hair cut tomorrow morning before leaving for holiday, I won't even be able to have that without needing to go. How can I sit in a car for a 40 minute taxi when I arrive on holiday.

@idealworld897 maybe try the pants? Seen them in shops but not used them yet, but might be worth it in case of accidents

I may also call out of hours GP and get a prescription, then I can decide what course of antibiotics to take, I am presuming that the GP prescribed will be stronger than Boots prescribed ? at least I then have both options, if one of them doesn't come through ie either Boots won't prescribe or out of hours GP won't. Will wait the 2 hours to hear from Boots first.

It’s not so much stronger but if you don’t know what the bacteria is (ie without urine sample analysis) you need a broad spectrum AB like amoxicillin.

Not to worry you OP but I would see a doctor before you go if you can, but if not do it STRAIGHT away when you get there.

Source: Me, who took the advice to "just drink lots of water/sachets/cranberry and pee" and ended up 5/10 days in a hospital with a full blown kidney infection during a once in a life time massive family holiday to Tenerife...

It is not worth the risk whatsoever.

Me too, last year. Please, please don't ignore cystitis. My kidneys haven't really recovered.

How much urine can a tena lady hold ?! Im not expecting a pad to hold a full bladder, but I wouldn't expect to hold a full bladder everytime, when I am going so much

Fir anyone with meds for heart problems - please be careful of OTC preparations for cystitis as the formulas have changed (advice about this on the pack) plus ibuprofen might not be a wise choice to take.

It’s worth bearing in mind that dip tests are out of date and horribly inaccurate, missing as many as half of all infections. Get the antibiotics OP. And for the future, I swear by something called Bladapure (from Holland and Barrett) which is D-Mannose, cranberry powder and various minerals. It prevents infections by stopping bacteria sticking to the bladder wall.

What is the evidence for this please? I ask because I use these tests daily to diagnose UTIs & prescribe accordingly and haven't heard anything about this

You can fill in an online boots form tonight and it will be ready in working hours within two hours so you can pick up tomorrow. I did the same this week. Filled in the form at 9 and picked them up at 11 for 23 quid. Given j was in agony a bargain.

Hellostrawberries · 31/07/2023 21:13

Sounds like you're getting sorted. Ibuprofen is good for the constant urge to pee. I only found that out recently. We imagine the urge comes from a full bladder but it doesn't, it comes from the inflammation. Anti inflammatorys completely get rid of the sensation when I get cystitis.

You need to flush it out. Drink as much water as you can and pee it out. I’ve tried cranberry etc and it doesn’t help really - loads and loads of water is the only way. You will need to pass it all out!

Yep, recent epidemiological studies show little evidence that cranberry does anything 🤷🏼‍♀️

daisychain01 · 31/07/2023 21:21

Prevention: always wipe your bottom from front to back never the other way round.

It's apparently the No 1 cause of UTI according to the NHS website.

Pipiestrelle · 31/07/2023 21:21

Forgot to mention re warmth: if necessary detach the shower head and direct it at your urethra to help ease the pain.

millymoo1202 · 31/07/2023 21:23

Pharmacist can prescribe you a 3 day course with your symptoms, I’m in Scotland so not sure if it’s the same where you are

idealworld897 · 31/07/2023 21:23

@NumberFortyNorhamGardens I agree that the dip tests are out of date and inaccurate. Don't know why GPs still use these.

Buy all the cystitis sachets?

Wnikat · 31/07/2023 21:24

Bicarb diluted in water
I think you can buy antibiotics over the counter in spain

idealworld897 · 31/07/2023 21:24

@Prettypaisleyslippers currently drinking them as I type !

whatistheworld · 31/07/2023 21:24

normally if going on hols and past experience a GP would prescribe antibiotics on the understanding you only take if really needed. did you explain the situation to them? they maybe able to help tomorrow am?

Wnikat · 31/07/2023 21:26

Ignore me you can’t buy antiobiotics without prescription in Spain

Mariposista · 31/07/2023 21:26

OP I would not be taking the advice about home remedies, drinking water or any of the like. A UTI requires antibiotics and you need to do what you need to do to get them.
I wouldn't be so forthright but my dear gran died 3 months ago - she had a heart condition but it was a water infection that finally tipped her over the edge. I am sure you are much younger and healthier, but UTIs are nasty and not to be taken lightly. And you won't enjoy your holiday if you have one.

premiom · 31/07/2023 21:26

This exact scenarion happened to me. I was able to book an out of hours appt for the same day then collected the prescribed antibiotics from the chemist straight after (GP sent prescription to chemist electronically). Good luck.

If you get the maxi pants - boots usually stock them - they will hold a reasonable bladder full. You need the pants rather than the pads for coverage if you are a 'sudden gusher' rather than a slower flow if you get what I mean!

And yes spanish pharmasists carry a lot more than ours do here and are alot further ahead in pharmacy prescribing than we are. You'll likely find an English speaking one easily enough if not Google translate is your friend! They will find you what you need if you don't manage to sort before you go.

MsCactus · 31/07/2023 21:30

Buy bucket loads of D-Mannose from waterfall D-Mannose website, they're based in York. It cured my chronic UTis when they became resistant to antibiotics. If you take enough D-Mannose (and it's ecoli infection) it WILL work, but taking a lot over the recommended dose does upset your stomach... Maybe not the best for travelling
