What the hell am I going to do ? URGENT

Going abroad tomorrow. Today, I have what feels like the start of a UTI. Namely, peeing a lot & a constant dull urge to pee. No blood/pain/discomfort as yet. Dr did a dip test today and was all clear, so wouldn't prescribe antibiotics. This is how the last UTI started, when the dip test showed nothing then 12 hours later I was calling the out of hours DR with blood in urine and severe discomfort. Fortunately for that occurrence, I managed to get antibiotics.

Ive now potentially got to travel tomorrow with the constant need to pee. How the hell am I going to do that. I will be abroad (Spain) - what if I need antibiotics ? Not so easy to get ?

WHAT TO DO ?

I have debated calling the out of hours DR tonight, exaggerating the symptoms, and getting antibiotics prescribed over the phone. I'm so worried as the last UTI started in this way ie dip was clear but needing to pee a hell of a lot and it turned into a full blown UTI.

Any advice ?

D-Mannose has been shown in recent clinical studies to effectively treat UTIs (and be as effective as antibiotics).

Are you a urologist? Most urologists now know about D-Mannose for UTIs, but no GP I've ever visited has.

(Had chronic bladder infections for years & saw many many specialists)

Did you get prescribed low dose long term antibiotics? Finally urologists are catching up on this treatment and this is now NICE guidelines

i had ALL treatments like bladder installations, urethra dilation and d- mannose. 8 years and a new urologist just prescribed cheap as chips very low dose antibiotics . 2 years and I was ( touch wood) free of them - not a single attack in last 3 years.

will also take buscopen too, we have that in the house

Just be aware if you are exaggerating your symptoms and saying you have blood in your urine that the pharmacist may not be able to prescribe antibiotics - that was the case with me. I had to get them off the doctor.

ThatSunCreamSmell · 31/07/2023 22:05

I've been in a similar situation - I think you're doing all the right things but if it hasn't passed by the time you travel then just load up on incontinence pads and have a little wee when it gets too much.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 31/07/2023 22:09

Hope you get your antibiotics very soon.
As soon as I start getting any cystitis symptoms I start drinking loads of pineapple juice (not cranberry as it's useless on me) & it stops it in its tracks.
Now it might be because I'm drinking loads to flush the cystitis bacteria out of my system, but pineapples contain bromelain which has anti-inflammatory properties & some anti-bacterial effects.
I also take an effervescent Vitamin C tablet in a glass of water too which helps.

ChiaraRimini · 31/07/2023 22:13

Dip tests are not sensitive enough to pick up a lot of UTIs.
hope you get your antibiotics tmrw from boots OP. Unfortunately nitrofurantoin makes me feel terrible but it does work well for utis.

helibirdcomp · 31/07/2023 22:24

Also get some cystitis tablets like Effercitrate. They seem to reduce the burn. Plus incontinence pads or knickers. If you are on a plane with the seatbelt sign on you will need them!

No reply or update from Boots, it's been over 2 hours. They said they would respond within 2 hours.
I have found a packet of pnenoxymethylpenicllin 250MG, that I had left over from some time ago. Thoughts on taking these ?

I'm having my hair cut tomorrow morning before leaving for holiday, I won't even be able to have that without needing to go. How can I sit in a car for a 40 minute taxi when I arrive on holiday.

Way back when I was in my teens I was told to drink lots of lemon barley water and it still works now, may be worth a go.

Hawkins009 · 31/07/2023 22:48

Take a chance all the best op

Turmerictolly · 31/07/2023 22:57

Health care will be much better in Spain - you might have to pay some euros but not many. Take your chances.

mummydoris2006 · 31/07/2023 22:57

@idealworld897 unfortunately the penicillin won't help so I wouldn't bother! Usually trimethropim is the standard antibiotic prescribed for a UTI until urine sample cultures can be tested in a lab to show what antibiotics may be needed such as ciprofloxin

mummydoris2006 · 31/07/2023 23:02

Sorry about the typo, I've had a couple of strokes this year and it still affects me 🤦🏻‍♀️.

I meant to type ciprofloxacin, also nitrofurantoin is another commonly prescribed antibiotic again usually dependent on the cultures.

I hope you manage to get away and have a lovely holiday 🌞

Great advice on plenty of water, sodium bicarb.
An anti histamine will calm everything down for your flight.

Is it not within 2 hours during working hours?

Hope you get some relief and enjoy your holiday

FatCatatPaddingtonStation · 31/07/2023 23:03

Agree that the dip tests are rubbish. My son often tests negative on these and subsequent lab tests confirm infection.

He has recurrent UTIs due to a medical condition. He was prescribed a prophylactic low dose AB until he was three and since then he has taken Waterfall D Mannose daily, as pp have said, as recommended by his Consultant Urologist, so would recommend getting some in going forward if you are a repeat sufferer. However, he still take trimethoprim AB for raging UTIs.

Hope you feel better soon.

Katey83 · 31/07/2023 23:04

Utis as I have found to my massive detriment are increasingly antibiotics resistant. I have been on 10 types of antibiotics over past 18 months and cannot get rid. Anyway my tips are water water water and visit to gp as soon as poss to get culture as not worth taking common antibiotics for uti as these now mainly don’t work,

Yes, boil up barley, then drink it with some lemon in.

You can buy antibiotics for cystitis from Lloyds pharmacy or Superdrug - order them online.

I can usually head off cystitis by doing the following, but fair warning I do this as soon as I start getting it. It may be too late to work for you.

I drink a pint of water every half hour for 2-3 hours. You will pee like anything. I then drop it down to one every hour and keep that up for at least half the day. I mix in a bit of baking soda into a half-pint and include that too, to take the edge off, but don't do this anymore than twice a day or else I find it messes with your electrolyte balance.

Essentially I flush it out before it has the chance to get established.

Yes, also having a shower each time you need to wee helps to keep it all flowing out

SofiaAmes · 31/07/2023 23:08

Can you get AZO over the counter in the UK. It is not a treatment for the infection, but it sure does work for the symptoms. Just be careful...it turns your pee dayglo orange pink and will stain anything it comes in contact with. But it sure does work for the symptoms. Did I mention...it works for the symptoms.

Nope.
https://www.sweetcures.co.uk/blogs/health-hub/e-coli-cranberry

and

and

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20130415-cranberry-juice-to-stop-cystitis#:~:text=It%27s%20a%20well%2Dknown%20remedy,isn%27t%20quite%20so%20clear.

and so on…

at best it’s just because you’re drinking more, at very best it might help some people, and at worse a big majority of people will find it makes it worse

Those articles appear to be talking about cranberry juice mixed with other ingredients. Ocean Spray is only 10% cranberry juice. I imagine the capsules are cranberry juice concentrate only. I had a long term issue with utis 15/20 years ago. I took several courses of ABs and kept it away with pure cranberry juice, which is an incredibly viscous, bitter liquid.

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/07/2023 23:11

Posted too soon. I hope you get some ABs op. I took ciproflaxin each time but I see that research says low level, long term ABs, which does make sense as this is a recurrent issue for many women.

Maddy70 · 31/07/2023 23:12

Go to a pharmacy in Spain. They will give you antibiotics over the counter if you need them

WildBee · 31/07/2023 23:13

phenoxymethylpenicillin will not work for a UTI and this is the reason why antibiotic resistance is a huge problem.
