What the hell am I going to do ? URGENT

Going abroad tomorrow. Today, I have what feels like the start of a UTI. Namely, peeing a lot & a constant dull urge to pee. No blood/pain/discomfort as yet. Dr did a dip test today and was all clear, so wouldn't prescribe antibiotics. This is how the last UTI started, when the dip test showed nothing then 12 hours later I was calling the out of hours DR with blood in urine and severe discomfort. Fortunately for that occurrence, I managed to get antibiotics.

Ive now potentially got to travel tomorrow with the constant need to pee. How the hell am I going to do that. I will be abroad (Spain) - what if I need antibiotics ? Not so easy to get ?

WHAT TO DO ?

I have debated calling the out of hours DR tonight, exaggerating the symptoms, and getting antibiotics prescribed over the phone. I'm so worried as the last UTI started in this way ie dip was clear but needing to pee a hell of a lot and it turned into a full blown UTI.

Any advice ?

I find D Mannose really helpful.

mandlerparr · 01/08/2023 18:28

drink more water than you usually do and add some actual cranberry juice. No proof it works, but unless you are allergic, what will it hurt.

You can get uti antibiotics through boots online.

Mumpud · 01/08/2023 18:58

Can I add that, for next time, taking a sample to the docs from first thing in the morning is best. If you do it later in the day it doesn't always show up.
Good luck X

Ntft but inform your travel insurance, you won't be covered if not.

Grannyknowsbest · 01/08/2023 19:13

Holiday insurance will cover you in case.
But get some sachets for now.

OhcantthInkofaname · 01/08/2023 19:15

In the US we now have home UTI test strips. That settles the "is this an infection yet" question.

And vitamin C.

She should inform them before she travels

I'm from Spain with lots of UTI experience. Worst comes to worst, you can get Monurol from any pharmacy over there. It is an antibiotic, you don't need a prescription for it and it works wonders. Good luck!

Are you visiting your in-laws by any chance?

YesSirMam · 01/08/2023 19:49

Superdrug prescribe antibiotics for UTI can you buy & collect tomorrow to take with you?

IsisoftheWalbrook · 01/08/2023 19:51

I hope it clears in time for you holiday.

I had recurrent kidney infections and my doc prescribed amitriptyline antidepressants on a low dose. It was bloody miraculous. Perhaps something to consider when you get home.

As well as the advice on wiping from front to back, I’ll add ALWAYS wee after sex. And quickly afterwards. Don’t hang around.

How much urine can a tena lady hold ?! Im not expecting a pad to hold a full bladder, but I wouldn't expect to hold a full bladder everytime, when I am going so much

From experience the pants are far better than pads, pads can move and then leaks happen. The joys of having neuropathic bladder

Morgysmum · 01/08/2023 20:32

Drink some cranberry juice, it's supposed to help. I don't know if will or not, but worth a try. Could it be a touch of thrush. You could buy some canisten, duo, pessery and cream. Then you could treat before travelling or on holiday. Maybe do this and drink Cranberry juice. Double whammy.

IvyIvyIvy · 01/08/2023 21:09

The pharmacies in Spain hand out a lot more over the counter than we do and might even supply antibiotics. They have good healthcare- I would still go.

Mummyofbananas · 01/08/2023 21:31

I took a horrific UTI on a flight- make sure you have plenty to drink- plenty of water- also I was prescribed anti-spasmodic (like you'd get for IBS) abroad and it stopped the horrible feeling of having to sit on toilet while you can't pee!

agent765 · 01/08/2023 21:44

Happy to see you've had it sorted, OP.

I've had MANY (way too many) UTIs over the years - the ones I've tried to manage with upping liquids/sachets/cranberry juice have developed into kidney infections.

You might have sent a sample in too early. I send it in as soon as I feel it starting but the infections don't show up straight away. Not even if it's sent in to test.

Because of this, I've been refused antibiotics. This is troubling as a few days later I've ALWAYS tested positive. I have a condition that relapses when I get infections and despite the GP knowing this, getting antibiotics is like getting blood from a stone.

I'm very aware of antibiotic resistance and the problems we're storing for ourselves but being given IV antibiotics over 48 hours and taking a hospital bed for something I have a very strong history of doesn't help anyone.

I bought a few packs of antibiotics while on holiday years ago. They replaced the 'emergency pack' I was always given. I give it 36 hours before taking a sample then start them. The result has always come back positive but by then I've started the pack. The ones I get for that infection are held for the next time.

I would add that double-voiding my bladder has been life-changing for me. Something I was taught by my continence nurse 5 years ago. I've gone from 12-13 infections annually to having one in 2 years. Amazing. And saves me from wrecking my gut biome at the same time.

Try buying some D Mannose fizzy tablets from Holland and Barrett. You can buy a course of a antibiotics from Boots.

Used to get utis fairly regularly and dmannose powder or tablets was a life saver. No more crying on the toilet in the small hours cos you can't get to sleep. Not as strong as antibiotics but antibiotics bring their own issues.

Slutdrop · 01/08/2023 22:14

You can buy antibiotics otc in Spain.
