What the hell am I going to do ? URGENT

Going abroad tomorrow. Today, I have what feels like the start of a UTI. Namely, peeing a lot & a constant dull urge to pee. No blood/pain/discomfort as yet. Dr did a dip test today and was all clear, so wouldn't prescribe antibiotics. This is how the last UTI started, when the dip test showed nothing then 12 hours later I was calling the out of hours DR with blood in urine and severe discomfort. Fortunately for that occurrence, I managed to get antibiotics.

Ive now potentially got to travel tomorrow with the constant need to pee. How the hell am I going to do that. I will be abroad (Spain) - what if I need antibiotics ? Not so easy to get ?

WHAT TO DO ?

I have debated calling the out of hours DR tonight, exaggerating the symptoms, and getting antibiotics prescribed over the phone. I'm so worried as the last UTI started in this way ie dip was clear but needing to pee a hell of a lot and it turned into a full blown UTI.

Any advice ?

I'd exaggerate the symptoms and try my best to get out of hours prescription.
Failing that I'd cancel my hair appointment ( you can always wear a hat) and be waiting for the GP surgery to open in the morning and explaining I hadn't slept due to severe pain and need to pee.

D Mannose works for me especially if caught early

LittleRebelGirl · 31/07/2023 20:40

I'd be going to out of hours and explaining the history. You have recurrent UTI. You need treatment.

I have travel insurance and there is a pharmacy in the town we are staying in and a separate DR office which confirms English speaking. I have just completed the Boots online order service, they have said they will review my order and come back to me within 2 hours for UTI. Hoping to collect from Boots tomorrow morning. I have the sachets from the pharmacy. They make me feel sick drinking them, but have forced 1 down so far. Will cane the water intake tonight.

The Boots UTI service is excellent. You'll be fine OP

idealworld897 · 31/07/2023 20:44

I may also call out of hours GP and get a prescription, then I can decide what course of antibiotics to take, I am presuming that the GP prescribed will be stronger than Boots prescribed ? at least I then have both options, if one of them doesn't come through ie either Boots won't prescribe or out of hours GP won't. Will wait the 2 hours to hear from Boots first.

Oh and pick up some Tenas while you are in Boots just in case.

idealworld897 · 31/07/2023 20:46

@Fizzadora - good call. I don't like ant type of towel but this might be a must !

Not to worry you OP but I would see a doctor before you go if you can, but if not do it STRAIGHT away when you get there.

Source: Me, who took the advice to "just drink lots of water/sachets/cranberry and pee" and ended up 5/10 days in a hospital with a full blown kidney infection during a once in a life time massive family holiday to Tenerife...

It is not worth the risk whatsoever.

INeedAnotherName · 31/07/2023 20:46

My DD did the Boots online and it worked perfectly for her. She didn't even wait the 2hrs, she got the call after 30 minutes.

Hopefully it all works for you too. Have a great holiday!

BitchBrigade · 31/07/2023 20:48

Never mind, I see you are being entirely sensible unlike I was 😁

mrshenny · 31/07/2023 20:49

I haven't had one for a while but I used to get them a lot and I would buy a huge bottle of water and drink it all and just keep drinking and I guess flush it out. Seemed to help!

Cystitis sachets from Tesco now! One every 3/4 hours. This was me on fri. Big day/night out on sat. I was feeling much better by the morning

Favouritefruits · 31/07/2023 20:52

Either go through Lloyds online Dr or in Spain they sell Azo which is a tablet which dyes your bladder but gives relief to UTI pain. Drink as much as you can and hold your bladder you need a good stream of pee to wee out the bacteria.

autienotnaughti · 31/07/2023 20:55

You can buy antibiotics from boots. I'd order tonight to collect tomorrow morning

RosesAndHellebores · 31/07/2023 20:57

If you explained your situation to your gp I think the service you received was execrable.

Pipiestrelle · 31/07/2023 20:58

It’s in Boots that I buy the cranberry capsules recommended to me by my GP who’d been to a urology seminar. Only the capsules work - I now take them daily.
I find warmth helps - a warm hot water bottle pressed between your legs/ Tena pad. If it becomes really bad, pee in a shallow bath of warm water.
Hope you feel better soon.

Laiste · 31/07/2023 20:59

As well as the various good advice here to treat the infection, don't forget you can take ibroprophen to ease the actual paid and discomfort.

It sounds ridiculous but even though i've suffered with cystitis on and off for years it's only recently i twigged that as well as doing all the water, bi-carb sachets and antibiotic tablets to treat the infection, good old pain killers help A LOT to remove the misery of it all.

Damnedidont · 31/07/2023 21:00

Meds from chemist and gallons of cranberry juice. Juice not drink

idealworld897 · 31/07/2023 21:00

I've started on the sachets this eve. They make me feel sick but I am holding them down. Hopefully antibiotics from some source tonight/tomorrow - either GP out of hours or Boots. Picking up Tena lady for the journey.

get to a supermarket and pick up some of those cystitis sachets - they are brilliant :) I know how you are feeling though.

idealworld897 · 31/07/2023 21:01

@Pipiestrelle I will try to get the cranberry capsules to take with me. Ty.

Cystitis sachets
Cranberry tablets
Paracetamol
And I know it's odd but orange juice

Mirabai · 31/07/2023 21:02

In a similar situation I called a private OOHs doctor and they arrived with antibiotics. Expensive but worth it.

mariiiajane · 31/07/2023 21:03

I've been able to flood what I believed to be a UTI out of my system a couple of times with lots of pints of water and lots of cranberry juice.

You pee so much it's untrue but it definitely relieved the symptoms and they subsided within a day.
