I keep thinking that in recent years summer seems to have moved to May/June and it’s pretty much always over by now.

I agree. It was hot May and beginning of June. My birthday is the end of August and it always used to be hot. It hasn't been now for years.

I haven't even got my summer outfits out for work yet.

Sarah2891 · 22/07/2023 10:42

I'm just relieved we aren't having relentless extreme heat to be honest.

justlass · 22/07/2023 10:42

I don't mind it being cooler, but where I am it's just been rain every day for weeks now and set to continue. It's grey and dark and it gets me down. Sunshine and getting outside in it lifts my mood, but I'm really struggling at the moment. Add to that the fact that I can't dry any washing, due to rain outside and it feeling damp inside. I keep hoping it'll change soon, but the forecast shows it staying like this for now 😣

Destinedforfakeness · 22/07/2023 10:43

It's really starting to get me down. I live in the north east where its not that warm most of the year and it's windy. So the tiny bit of nice weather is all we get!

I understand the slightly lower temp being preferably but the non stop rain for all of July is getting a bit fucking much.

Iolani · 22/07/2023 10:44

Here’s a couple of images.
The top one shows areas worldwide that had above (red) or below (blues) the average temperature in july76 and the bottom one is this year.
So heat wise we re definitely above. Couldn’t find one on rainfall though.

Why is the weather so shit?

SpeckledlyHen · 22/07/2023 09:12

I have to say I’m really enjoying this summer so far. Much nicer temperatures at low 20’s than the mid 30’s we had last year. I found that unbearable.

@SpeckledlyHen

give over, we are having a terrible summer
so much rain

No one is asking for relentless extreme heat, but some hot weather would be nice. It's 15° here and pissing it down.

Abbafabs · 22/07/2023 10:47

Quite happy with these temperatures but agreed, it could be a bit sunnier! The wind has been mad this week though, wore a jumper and jacket out yesterday. Yet this time last year I was permanently in shorts/crop tops for about 2 months!

After the past few years I think we've just forgotten that this is kind of what a normal UK summer looks like!

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/07/2023 10:48

countrygirl99 · 22/07/2023 10:36

The crops are ready to be harvested but the weather means they can't. You going to be do happy when the price of food goes up even more?

@twentyonepoundnote

this weather is shit!
so cold and so much rain
how the fuck can anyone like it?

I’m manifesting scorchio for next year and the years to come 😎

Oakbeam · 22/07/2023 10:49

I agree. I don’t mind the cooler temperatures, although I’d prefer it ten degrees warmer, but the rain is getting me down.

Jeez it's terrifying isn't it

@Sarah2891

lol low expectations
it doesn’t have to be one or the other
this July has been shit weather - no one can argue otherwise

FuppingEll · 22/07/2023 10:49

I'm in the West of Ireland and it is wet, wet, wet. I hate it. I'm an outdoor kind of person and look forward to a few months of the year where I don't need to bring a coat but for at least the last month here is has rained pretty much every day and its not looking like changing anytime soon. Most summers our local lake goes down enough that I can walk around the shore, this summer the lake is overflowing. We had a few nice weeks in May/the start of June but that feels like I very long time ago now.

Ridemeginger · 22/07/2023 10:51

It's fucked the Test Match Cricket, when England have Australia on the ropes. For that reason I am grumpy. Otherwise, I'd rather this than 49 degrees, and still not being able to go out and my garden shrubs and wildlife suffering.

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/07/2023 10:52

Livinghappy · 22/07/2023 09:26

Given the European situation our weather is preferable so I haven't found it terrible. Its not cold at least!

@Livinghappy

it is cold
its 14 degrees here
that is not warm

Oh no this rain is awful I've had to put my boots on to work! A coat and my brolly by the time I got to work I was all clamy. Its so inconsistent too.

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/07/2023 10:54

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 22/07/2023 09:44

As a gardener i love the rain.

Think of it as life-giving. We'd all be dead with no rain.

@ZeldaWillTellYourFortune

whats the point of a lovely garden though if it’s always pissing it down and you can’t sit out and enjoy it?

Fbshe · 22/07/2023 10:54

The rain hasn’t stopped here! The street has flooded twice the last couple of weeks. It’s awful walking the dog because it’s too hot for a raincoat but too wet to go without. I’ve been back in welly’s for weeks.

Lordofmyflies · 22/07/2023 10:56

Its rubbish. I'm in Cornwall. We've had a hose pipe ban since June 2022! It's pissing down. The roads are chocker with poor holiday makers trying to escape their damp tents and campsites.
When it really rains super hard, untreated effluent runs into the sea making it unsafe to swim for days. (Thanks SW Water).
Generally, I'm fed up!

U2HasTheEdge · 22/07/2023 10:56

I sometimes wonder why so many MNers love to jump on these threads talking about how much they love shit weather. In real life, no one I know is going on about how great this summer is.

There is a middle ground between scorching and this shit. It's windy, rainy and grey. I find it hard to believe that so many people are really enjoying this.

Whinge · 22/07/2023 10:57

Otherwise, I'd rather this than 49 degrees, and still not being able to go out and my garden shrubs and wildlife suffering.

Again though, it's not one or the other. No one wants 40°+ weather. We just want dry days and temperatures higher than 15°

That's not too much to ask for considering it's late July.

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/07/2023 10:58

morelippy · 22/07/2023 09:56

I love how a few days of excessive heat last year meant the whole (lovely) summer was labelled unpleasant, yet WEEKS of cool wet weather this year is ok 🙄

I know right!

why are people on mumsnet so anti- warm weather?!

why do some people seem to prefer this - raining all
day situation? Is it so they can be all ‘cozy’ indoors and cancel their plans and so they are happy cos they don’t have to go anywhere and see people?!

can anyone explain to me??

Elphame · 22/07/2023 10:59

I'm absolutely hating this weather. It's raining yet again this morning.

At least the wind has dropped.

I'm seriously thinking of booking a last minute getaway to Italy on Monday

1stTimeMama · 22/07/2023 10:59

I've always been an Autumn/Winter gal, but living in Cornwall, where it seema to rain for 354 days of the year, this has been the first year I've felt I NEEDED the sun. We don't get the really hot weather here either, so when everyone was scorching last year, it was perfectly warm here.
The constant rain is really is quite depressing.

Blottingpaperscript · 22/07/2023 11:00

I'm a perpetually cold person, so all this cool wet weather has felt torturous after the long cold winter and spring we had this year. I have been shivering at points even in jumpers which is ridiculous. It makes me feel like my bones hurt! I need some warmth!
