I sometimes wonder why so many MNers love to jump on these threads talking about how much they love shit weather. In real life, no one I know is going on about how great this summer is.

There is a middle ground between scorching and this shit. It's windy, rainy and grey. I find it hard to believe that so many people are really enjoying this.

I know, in real life every single person I know is moaning about the rain

Ridemeginger · 22/07/2023 11:01

We have had a very long spell of dry, hot weather - in May and June. The seasons have been shifting for years. It's felt Autumnal to me at the start of August for at least the last 10 years. What we in England/Wales need is a shift of term times like they have in Scotland, with Summer hols kicking in much earlier.

Iolani · 22/07/2023 11:03

It would be interesting to know who is getting rain all, most, some of the time.
Im guessing those MN having really terrible weather are in the West, North, higher land. ? Is that right?

We are the SEast and whilst it’s not blazing sunshine
it’s not raining a lot.
Temp at the moment 18.5 ( we are not in a city or town, it makes a difference aparently )

Perihellopause · 22/07/2023 11:03

As I have been plunged into peri-hellopause this year with hot flushes galore. I’m secretly enjoying the shit weather as even a vague heat is sending my body into what feels like heat stroke!

Sorry😅

DustyLee123 · 22/07/2023 11:03

I’m catching all of this lovely free water for my garden, in the water butt 😊

My neighbour has 2 water butts they've both been full for over a week so even that bonus to the shit weather is no longer a bonus.

NowItsLikeSnowAtTheBeach · 22/07/2023 11:06

It's shit. Absolute shit.

CantHaveTooMuchChocolate · 22/07/2023 11:06

In Scotland and still waiting for summer to arrive… if you like cold weather you should move up here, lucky to see anything over 18 during the summer 😐

Matilda762 · 22/07/2023 11:06

For me it is the cloudy skies I don’t like much; it is always cloudy in UK, but I do prefer it than trying to do things with 30 plus degrees. It is better to sleep and do things, work.

If we live near the sea or have a pool I wouldn’t mind much warmer weather

Madcats · 22/07/2023 11:07

I remember the summer being shit 16 years ago, when I was on maternity leave. [That said DD did have fantastic weather for her late June birthday this year]. We're in Somerset.

Last week was better than we were expecting (not too much rain), but I think the weekend is supposed to be a washout. No doubt it will improve significantly once the school holidays are over.

Pigeon31 · 22/07/2023 11:07

I'm very glad we're not seeing temps of 40 C here this year, although it's a shame about the Ashes.

But with the climate emergency, we are going to see more extreme/ unusual weather - it's really quite grim.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 22/07/2023 11:08

why do some people seem to prefer this - raining allday situation?
It nearly always boils down to the fact that they feel too self conscious in summer clothes.

ohtowinthelottery · 22/07/2023 11:13

Don't think there's been a day here in the last 2 weeks when it hasn't rained. Chatting with a farmer this morning and he said he hasn't had to irrigate his potato crop for the last fortnight. So many outdoor events planned are either cancelled, curtailed or suffering from reduced footfall possibly meaning they'll make a loss. And no sign of it stopping in the next couple of weeks. Vague talk of possible improvement from mid August. I find it all a bit depressing. I preferred last year's heatwave.

Or maybe just thankful we don’t have to put up with topless men….

BarbaraofSeville · 22/07/2023 11:14

It's the unpredictably I hate and Sod's law that dictates that it will be warm and sunny while at work/school etc, but pissing it down at weekends and especially if there's an event you want to go to that would be great in good weather and shit in wet weather.

And no, it isn't all about the 'wrong clothing' I want actual nice weather not trudging around bundled up in a waterproof.

Bollocks

MarleyJP · 22/07/2023 11:15

‘Miserable’ is the right word OP, that's how this awful weather makes me feel. Grey sky, wet, not able to garden, ruined outdoor events.

DustyLee123 · 22/07/2023 11:15

Bollocks

@DustyLee123

so why do so many people on here profess to love this grey cold wet July weather?
it really baffles me!

Princessbananahamock · 22/07/2023 11:17

I’m utterly pissed off by the weather. On this day last year I was on hayle beach it was lush!
Due to circumstances I haven’t booked a holiday this year (normally go this week!!!) so spent the money on new lovely outdoor furniture, fire pit and yes a hot tub! Can’t use any of it for now. I’m blaming the French for the weather and my headache!

Not to mention the footwear conundrum already mentioned in this thread

SwirlyShirly · 22/07/2023 11:19

Something to do with the jet stream being lower than normal for this time of year, so dragging down cooler air from up t'north and moist air in from the Atlantic. Something like that anyway, I'm no meteorologist.

Iolani · 22/07/2023 11:14

Or maybe just thankful we don’t have to put up with topless men….

Yesterday at school pick up there was a 10 minute period where the sun shone between rain showers. I saw two topless men in that time. So maybe you are on to something there.

Pinkywoo · 22/07/2023 11:19

LittleBearPad · 22/07/2023 09:16

It is lovely. I think you’re exaggerating about the rain. It’s hardly never ending.

Looks pretty never ending to me!

What's also never ending is my Sicilian DH ranting about the bloody weather (he is on an outside job at the moment to be fair), not helped by FIL moaning on the phone about being too hot.

Why is the weather so shit?

@DustyLee123

so why do so many people on here profess to love this grey cold wet July weather?
it really baffles me!

Because I don’t want to sweat to death at work in the heat.
Because I don’t want to melt while doing housework/cooking.
I don’t want to have to get up at 5/6am to walk the dog.
Because I want to be cool enough to sleep at night.

Getting married in a couple of hours ... weather is terrible here in Brighton - have decided to incorporate this into my speech! Thankfully lots of guests are sailors so will be checking knots holding marquees in place Daffodil
