BBC Presenter and yet more allegations

1000 replies

friendlycat · 11/07/2023 23:28

It would appear that the front page of tomorrow’s The Sun has further allegations about messages with a new 17 year old. Creepy hearts etc

Scrolling through Sky news and seeing front pages of the papers. This appears bottom right on The Sun front page.

@BloodyHellKen off topic but you've stolen my next user name - we say it at least twice a day in this house!

derxa · 12/07/2023 18:37

I hope Huw Edwards recovers well from his episode of depression. I applaud his wife for making her strong and supportive statement. All of you calling for his head on a spike... please stop. Think of his wife, his children and wider family. I don't approve of his alleged extra marital activities but they're none of my business.

Jess Phillips MP
@jessphillips
Just coming on here to say that Vicky Flind is by some distance one of the nicest, kindest and most decent women I've had the privilege to work with.

I've been told similar by someone who has worked with her.

And breaking his wedding vows, being unfaithful to his wife, putting himself before his own children and their welfare/happiness and generally acting like a arse.

Was talking to my friend saying how it's ALWAYS the woman who ends up picking up the pieces.

That's why it kinda feels awkward it being her putting out the statement too.

Poor woman.

SerafinasGoose · 12/07/2023 18:40

Pandor · 12/07/2023 18:33

@SerafinasGoose - are you saying that depression never plays a part in people seeking out meaningless sexual encounters or engaging in risky and self destructive behaviours?

I'm not saying it never plays a part. No one could in any seriousness make such a large, sweeping, unsubstantiated claim (casts cynical eye upthread ...)

What I am saying is that plenty of - most? - men with depression don't compensate for it by indulging in morally reprehensible, highly dodgy conduct of a sexual nature.

But it's quite interesting how 'depression' is often cited as an excuse when they do just that.

I'm not sure anyone has been calling for his head on a spike, merely pointing out how some men in a position of wealth and power unfortunately abuse their position and as in this situation it's the wife and children who suffer.

I can almost hear her humming stand by your man in the background …. These women are equally part of the problem.

Or maybe she thinks her children (think there are five of them?) have more than enough to contend with at the moment given their dad has been the centre of a media furore, had to listen to a lot of distasteful things he's done (how would you feel if you found out that was what your dad was doing) probably been doorstepped by the press and there has been a major mental health crisis. SHe probably decided that hearing their mum lay into their dad at this juncture would not be helpful for them.

Agreed. I feel very bad for her and the children.

I feel bad for him too because he must be in a poor state but he did actually bring it on himself.

It would be so refreshing for one of them read the statement out with a big fuck you, Huw I’m going to take you to the cleaners in the divorce added on the end of it. If she’s such a nice lady, she’ll have lots of support from family and friends. She doesn’t need him. She’s probably been lied to For the last four days.

Translucentwaters · 12/07/2023 18:43

I wonder how the mental health of the alleged victims is faring? They don’t have the cushion of wealth, fame, specialist care, committed wives to defend them.

EasterIssland · 12/07/2023 18:43

Soothingaftersun · 12/07/2023 18:24

His poor wife. Humiliated, living in a sham of a marriage and at the end she's the one who's had to come out and deal with the fall out. Awful for her and her kids and also the young people involved

or maybe she knew and was happy with it
don’t think it’s easy for this famous people to come out of the closet … probably family knew and were happy with it. The message of the wife sounds more from a love point of view rather than someone that has just discovered they’ve been cheated on

Sweetashunni · 12/07/2023 18:44

Pandor · 12/07/2023 18:26

Regarding the status of his mental health - as I understand it he has spoke. About mental health struggles for many years, so this isn’t exactly a new “script”.

in any event it is not clear if mental health is being blamed for his behaviour (although it isn’t hard to say objectively that it was risky and potentially enormously self destructive). His current mental health may well be entirely linked to the last few days - the absolute collapse of his career, his reputation, possibly his family life. He may well feel all hope for the future is lost so I’m not surprised he is in care and no doubt being carefully watched.

To be honest what is there left to discuss or pursue? He’s in mental distress on a psych unit, his alleged ‘victim’ wants nothing to do with any of it even 3 years on, his family are probably in hiding and his career is finished.

👏🏻 Great result all round. Now let’s see which other tv presenters have acted seedily but legally lately, there’s a few more lives out there to ruin!

I expect the mental health of the first one is in the toilet after their parents unleashed this furore on their world against their wishes.

I am not sure any seventeen - twenty year old I know would even use the term ‘rubbish’ it is a very old fashioned word I haven’t even heard in decades. It’s worrying that even the language sounds off.

It's a commonly used word in my neck is the woods by young people...

Some marriages - and I am not saying it’s the case here, who knows - are marriages of platonic friendship and convenience as both parties are gay but unwilling to come out. I know a couple in this arrangement, they’re quite happy with their set up. Not my business anyway.

SerafinasGoose · 12/07/2023 18:47

3BSHKATS · 12/07/2023 18:24

That wasnt what I said, but minimising it is part of the problem. As is standing by them, blaming depression etc. If anyone i knew had behaved in such a manner I would not be issuing a statement- would you ?

Touche.

No, I would not.

First and foremost, however, this is an establishment problem. It's a Hobson's choice between their rugsweeping the behaviour of the powerful (men), and allowing that problem to continue with impunity as it always has. The other alternative is - a barbed irony here - a salacious media being the only ones apparently willing to expose that behaviour and stop the cover-ups, but risking vigilantism and a lack of proper justice in doing so.

In such an unappealing dilemma, the first consideration has to be the more vulnerable. Sadly, that's not without potentially serious ethical implications.

Freysimo · 12/07/2023 18:48

SerafinasGoose · 12/07/2023 18:30

A great many people have documented histories of depression and don't engage in alleged reprehensible conduct involving much younger people.

Check out any abuse thread on this very site and I can guarantee an objection of 'is he depressed?' will appear on the first few pages.

It isn't relevant. Depression doesn't make someone do these things.

Exactly, it's insulting to people with real mental health problems who wouldn't dream of behaving as he has.

Translucentwaters · 12/07/2023 18:50

So why are the police not taking any action?

Lacucuracha · 12/07/2023 18:53

He wasn’t too mentally ill to send threatening messages to a young person 🙄

Rich men have been hiding in hospitals when the shit hits the fans for centuries.

If I were leading a double life, there is a good chance my MH would be shot to pieces as well. It’s a shame no one has acknowledged the vulnerability of the victims in this, and the desperate state they must be in.

I do think it's dreadful how he's a mess but he has fucked up to at least some degree. And he can't blame others for that.

the80sweregreat · 12/07/2023 18:54

I hope the first person involved is receiving some help too, but I can imagine their 35 k is being spent on other things ( sadly ) or already gone.
It's all so sad for all involved , especially edwards wife and children. I do feel for them and the first persons parents who were only trying their best to help their child.

specialsauce · 12/07/2023 18:54

I don't understand all this ' poor Huw, he hasn't done anything illegal, it's his own private life' twaddle. Since when was giving huge sums of money to a 'barely legal' young person addicted to class A's ok? He clearly knew the lad would do anything to fund his habit. A newsreader too. Mental ill health is no excuse for encouraging young people to do themselves harm. 17 ffs. Only just finished their GCSE's. Young people need more protections from predatory adults.
