A vent seeing as I can't show my real disappointment -school awards evening

DD is in Y7. All of her friends had an email about an award they were winning at school. The awards evening was this evening.

We had no email. She got no award.

She does quite well at school (generally grade 7 in the important stuff). But really doesn't put much effort into anything else other than her hair and make up.

She has no interest in sports or any hobbies despite us giving her every single opportunity. Nothing !!

I'm disappointed. But obviously I can't show it to her.

So i'm venting on here instead.

My year 8 daughter is very similar. No advice, but i understand. It's hard watching them just slip under the radar isn't it?

Teddypops · 11/07/2023 19:22

I have even asked the school to let me know what percentage of the Year 7 children received an award.

My kids have never ever won an award despite always working hard. In a school of over 2000 the majority of the kids slip under the radar. Eldest is now at Uni, happy, healthy and enjoying life. School awards really mean jack shit in the end.

That’s a sad situation for a 12 year old.

TheOutlaws · 11/07/2023 19:31

I never won an award at school, but I did end up studying at Oxford Grin Some kids just seem to tick the award boxes, others (me) don’t.

Hellocatshome · 11/07/2023 19:32

Even at secondary school the awards system isn't fair. Is your DD happy and healthy? if the answer is yes then all is good.

Vettrianofan · 11/07/2023 19:34

Make up at 12?

Teddypops · 11/07/2023 19:34

She is absolutely happy and healthy. Of which I am very glad.

If you know she doesn't put much effort into anything other than her appearance why are you mithering school about how many won awards? Surely you know why she didn't.

Teddypops · 11/07/2023 19:35

Vettrianofan · 11/07/2023 19:34

Make up at 12?

I don't think that's quite so unusual. Do you have girls?

DS has never won an award and is in his last year next year. I feel your pain.

CallMeDiaz · 11/07/2023 19:37

Not sure I know any 12 year olds who don't wear make up!

Well like I said in my OP. She gets good grades at school and there were plenty of academic awards. She has got 8s in all her maths assessments this year. 7s in everything else.

I am very proud of her for that.

Also, I would like to know what percentage of the children got awards to help me process it that's all.

Your dd is 12, and doesn't make much effort, is a bit apathetic and is otherwise fine but you're annoyed because she didn't win an award for something? Has she worked hard at something over and above expectations? Has she overcome adversity? Has she made progress where she was expected to make very little?

What is you think she should be rewarded for?

BlissedOutCat · 11/07/2023 19:38

DD didn't get an award once because the HT decided it had to go to someone who had been at the school since Y7. She joined for sixth form and had the highest marks by far in what was her favourite subject, which is now studying at uni). The subject was only available in sixth form.

qbansopwt · 11/07/2023 19:38

She's getting a GCSE grade 8 and 7 in her assessments in year 7 !!

sparklefresh · 11/07/2023 19:40

If she's not exceptional why should she get awards? Is she fussed or is this more about you?

Saynowt · 11/07/2023 19:40

Teddypops · 11/07/2023 19:22

@Teddypops oh dear, you have just embarrassed yourself by doing that.

I have an award winning DC and one who isn't. The one who wins is knowlegable, puts in the hard yards and gets great results. The one who doesn't win does the bare minimum. Their interests just lie elsewhere. I know it would be lovely if they were all hard working little academics, but lets face it they aren't. Awards are the time to shine for those that do put in the hard work.

SilkTrees · 11/07/2023 19:41

What is it that is actually annoying you, though, OP? That she didn't get an award, even though you acknowledge she doesn't try very hard? That her friends got one and she didn't? That she doesn't try harder?

Teddypops · 11/07/2023 19:41

qbansopwt · 11/07/2023 19:38

She's getting a GCSE grade 8 and 7 in her assessments in year 7 !!

Is it GCSE grade? I don't know how it works. Her predicted grades from her SATS were all 7s and 8s which she is mostly achieving.

OP posts:
CandyLeBonBon · 11/07/2023 19:42

When you say 'all her friends, how many people are we actually talking about? And how big it's the year 7 cohort?

Needmorelego · 11/07/2023 19:42

Awards at that age are usually just a cardboard certificate. Shame she didn’t get one.
If she really is interested in hair/makeup then that can become a hobby leading to a career.
I know a girl that when she was a similar age would do fancy braid hairstyles on her classmates for special occasions and they paid her for it. Embrace her interest 🙂

What is having a girl got to do with wearing make up? Men have their own range too😀

StephanieSuperpowers · 11/07/2023 19:43

What award would you have presented to her, OP?
