TV presenter allegations

Could we PLEASE have a thread that stays up?

Meaning don't name anyone, or any programme or ask for initials or hint.

I just would like to discuss how this is likely to unfold.

I know who it is now I'm certain.

FiddleLeaf · 09/07/2023 21:00

I don’t want to believe it’s him but it’s looking increasingly likely.

The whole thing is just awful for all involved.

Cantlastsixweeksofthis · 09/07/2023 21:00

@sarahh96 None of the guests are presenters on the BBC though? Do you mean guests on the show or presenters on that show?

The BBC said they became aware of the allegations in May, not that they were investigating. It’s taken the The Sun article to make them suspect the man and launch an investigation.

Here is the timeline from Sky News:

Here is a look at what allegations have been made and when they first came to light.

Friday 19 May: The family first make a complaint to the BBC. In the complaint, they reportedly asked the broadcaster to make the man "stop sending the cash".
When the presenter was still on air a month later, the family reportedly became frustrated. The BBC confirmed in a statement that it had "first became aware of a complaint in May".

June: The youth receives a £1,000 payment - allegedly made via PayPal, from the presenter, according to The Sun. Their mother said they "suddenly had this cash" after running out of money.

She said the payment had made it "obvious the BBC hadn't spoken to this man... as they thought he was too important".

She also claimed that initially, the "security boss gave us a number that didn't exist".

Thursday 6 July: The BBC receives "new allegations" of a "different nature" - but the broadcaster does not reveal any further details.

Friday 7 July: The Sun's bombshell exclusive is published both online and in print. The paper said the presenter is "a familiar face who is known to millions" and is also paid a six-figure salary by the BBC.

Well theres the problem right there

In May the request was for the BBC to 'make' the man stop making the payments.

Whether the family like it or not, this was a situation between 2 adults and the fact that more paymetns were made doesnt mean at all or imply that 'they thought he was too important', it is simply the fact that no employer can tell someone how to act in their private life if they're not breaking any laws

If the new information which came to light is that it has been going on since the young person was pre 18, that might be the new information which has been acted on, but on the facts given so far (which may or may not be accurate), I dont know what else an employer could do?

Alleged victim at the moment

Yes topnoddy you are quite right, thanks for correcting that, alleged victim.

I can't find that person's twitter page - says it's been removed

I have to say I'd never expect him to be so seedy.

@Cantlastsixweeksofthis one of them is/was

WibblyWobblyLane · 09/07/2023 21:12

Where are people getting female from? I'm sure it referred to the alleged victim as 'he' when the story first broke

Which person? Because the person who has been hinted at throughout this thread still has their twitter account up.

Sorry but that”s ridiculous. That’s a small snippet of the complaint. The family said “We just wanted the BBC to tell him to stop."

Of course the BBC can tell their presenter not to procure images from a child. It’s in their contracts that they can’t bring the BBC into disrepute.

IClaudine · 09/07/2023 21:14

I think a lot of rubbish is being spouted on this thread and a lot of people who claim insider knowledge have none.

No, it has always been referred to as ‘she’ in all the online articles I’ve seen.

No shit Sherlock !

This thread is virtually 100% total bollocks

But the person is not a child now and was not in May?

Indeed. And how do we know the Sun story is not bollocks too? It has form for outrageous lies.

Ontheroadyetagain · 09/07/2023 21:19

The only shows I can see on BBC on Friday night are Winbledon??

Ok there may have been more to the complaint, I was simply going on the timeline supplied

But in May, the young person was not child. No crime was being committed in May, so any employer cant insist on this?

Bringing into disrepute? Well Im not clear on what constitutes this given that Linekar was going to be suspended for a personal tweet about government policy, which was ludicrous in my view. The BBC then had to backtrack as he has the right to make personal comments as he sees fit (within the law)

I dont know if this falls under the same thing to be honest.

Fiancé wants me to share all details of previous relationships to show I have no secrets. I don’t think that’s healthy… and he regularly gets very angry about little things that I am not aware of and says it’s all me and that I have relationship issues. I need some advice pls

saraclara · 09/07/2023 21:17

The Metropolitan police confirmed it was in discussions with the BBC about the incident but had not received a formal allegation

So the mother has not reported this to the police.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/jul/09/bbc-suspends-presenter-accused-of-paying-teenager-for-explicit-images?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

She might have done. But she is not the victim.

Several of us on here and on the other threads have pointed this out over and over again.

A formal allegation needs to be made from the victim.
