Could we PLEASE have a thread that stays up?

Meaning don't name anyone, or any programme or ask for initials or hint.

I just would like to discuss how this is likely to unfold.

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints i was talking about the 20yrold.They didn't even want this to get out. A 20yr old will not cope with this. Their life is now ruined.

middler · 09/07/2023 20:22

I feel so sad for the victim but also the wife and children of the presenter. Their lives are changed forever.

Alleged victim at the moment

And you know this person has a wife and children?

As of now they and the accused remain anonymous.

Perhaps the simple solution to the threat of suicide is to never investigate any crime? #bekind don't investigate any wrongdoing.

And I would've thought that their life would've been ruined already with the crack addition?

tommyhoundmum · 09/07/2023 20:26

I know only what I read in the papers today. The BBC received a complaint in May and sat on its hands.

Hold on - this 20 year old (if the situation is as we are assuming) has not asked for any of this. Why should her life be ruined by this or affected by this, she has agency and choice over what she chooses to disclose or report or be known

And if its true that the choice was taken away from her by someone else to report this then that is terrible.

It was reported by the mother, who obviously has their best interests at heart.

You're now saying that it was terrible that the mother is trying to get them off of drugs (and the allegation is they are selling explicit photos for drug money)?

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 09/07/2023 20:19

We can't all be held hostage by the threat of suicide to stop us from talking about issues. That is the abusers playbook- people can't act without decency and with impunity and expect people to #bekind and turn a blind eye to deprived behaviour. Then Internet posters say that 'we never learn 'but the reality is those that wish to abuse power never learn.

Well said.

Can I ask a question? While you are all frothing at the mouth to find out the details... Are any of you giving any thought to how this frenzy will play out?

If this carries on you are going to end up with a dead 20yr old.

You really are covering yourself in glory all over this thread.

Has anyone searched the various ‘names + DM’ on Twitter? It’s interesting seeing who has a history of initiating DMs with followers, and the sex of those followers.

Its not terrible she was trying to get her off drugs, but she has now dragged her child's name/situation into the public gaze. It will be unbearable for her

Sunnyfunnytimes · 09/07/2023 20:36

This has gone a bit nuts, I mean transgender really? And it’s clearly been reported there is a shot of the accused in his boxers on his sofa the girl took during one interaction.

it is the mother who has pushed this, the young woman is a crack addict, the mother said it’s ruined her life. What pushed her to the sun was she complained to thr bbc and a month later said presenter transferred another 1k to the girls account. So this showed her thr bbc didn’t act.

the bbc are subtley indicating they couldn’t contact the person who made the complaint , or the daughter, by way of excusing themselves for not acting as they say they couldn’t fully investigate. I suspect a picture changes that.

the sun will have given him an opportunity to comment in advance , they always do. so he will have known the story was going to break snd had legal advice.

the reason people will know if it’s the person mostly being named is he is due to be on air tomorrow night, on return from his vacation, if he is, it’s someone else, if it’s not then it speaks for itself. Not him. Only time will tell. I say mostly as it’s all over thr internet, but there are also many other names, which aren’t getting as much attention,

sp many folks claiming specialist inside knowledge though. And much of it is clearly wrong.

Either way this speculation is going to continue till it comes out and I really think it will this week.

Imagine how she would feel when she found out her mother had handed those pictures to the BBC. BBC people looking at them, the police now probably looking at them, CPS looking at them, will a jury see them? How would you ever forgive your mother for doing that.

Would you care to give more information as to the reliability of that source? Without that, you're just another poster online claiming special insight with nothing to back that up.

I can say who it is, no. It is a journalist friend, not usually wrong. He was told who the person is, and that the teenager is a boy.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/07/2023 20:44

That should say can’t, not can !

It's human nature to be fascinated by such goings-on. It reminds us of our own safety and stability, through a sort of "there but for the grace of God go I" mechanism.
People really need to stop wielding suicide with po-faced gravitas at everything that will cause discomfort. We live in the Information Age - when any shit hits the fan, it flies across continents.
That's why anonymity is being protected now. The BBC isn't being remiss; it's making sure it doesn't do another Cliff Richard.
And meanwhile, like it or not, we are a gossiping species that peer-bonds over misfortune.

Well that's incorrect, the BBC were investigating and then this week more information came to light.

The BBC said they became aware of the allegations in May, not that they were investigating. It’s taken the The Sun article to make them suspect the man and launch an investigation.

Here is the timeline from Sky News:

Here is a look at what allegations have been made and when they first came to light.

Friday 19 May: The family first make a complaint to the BBC. In the complaint, they reportedly asked the broadcaster to make the man "stop sending the cash".
When the presenter was still on air a month later, the family reportedly became frustrated. The BBC confirmed in a statement that it had "first became aware of a complaint in May".

June: The youth receives a £1,000 payment - allegedly made via PayPal, from the presenter, according to The Sun. Their mother said they "suddenly had this cash" after running out of money.

She said the payment had made it "obvious the BBC hadn't spoken to this man... as they thought he was too important".

She also claimed that initially, the "security boss gave us a number that didn't exist".

Thursday 6 July: The BBC receives "new allegations" of a "different nature" - but the broadcaster does not reveal any further details.

Friday 7 July: The Sun's bombshell exclusive is published both online and in print. The paper said the presenter is "a familiar face who is known to millions" and is also paid a six-figure salary by the BBC.

the sex of the young person involved has not been made clear in media reports. My gut feeling is that’s because it is a young man who presents as a woman.

of course, we’ll probably never know for sure

I’m sticking by this

Filming or airing on Friday 7 July? There was no prime time, early evening, magazine programme on the BBC on Friday, the tennis was on, then news.

sarahh96 · 09/07/2023 20:53

@Lacucuracha moved to BBC2 while Wimbledon is on. Live not pre recorded
