Why would someone like Judy Dench…

Do shit TV adverts for money comparison sites. I don’t get it. She’s worth £45m. She’s a ‘national icon’. A dame! Why would you bother? It’s perplexes me

OP posts:

David Attenborough still gets plenty of work. (Is he 97?) The Wild Isles is brilliant.
Dame Judi has worked all her life, enjoys performing but can no longer take on acting parts. I'm sure this kind of gig suits her well.

SirChenjins · 01/07/2023 12:19

I read it was because she’s a Mumsnetter and after seeing some of Yeahyeahno’s other posts she decided to wind her up by doing that ad.

HaroldMeaker · 01/07/2023 12:20

I always think this about super successful actors doing shitty ads. But I suppose everyone here is right, she loves to work, loves to earn, keeps her busy, keeps her relevant…

senua · 01/07/2023 12:22

Does anybody actually buy anything just because a sleb has been paid shedloads to parrot some nonsense? It's a strange concept, isn't it.

😂😂😂

ChocChipHandbag · 01/07/2023 12:24

Can you imagine, names her hours and location, gets picked up by chauffeur, tells them exactly what she wants for lunch and snacks, says three lines, glides off home and gets the stonking fee into her account 24 hours later. It’s not like she needs to preserve her brand at her age and stature. Absolute money for jam. And maybe she wants to keep money coming in for her agent too?

DeliciouslyDecadent · 01/07/2023 12:24

Why does someone not know her name is Judi (and not Judy)? Shame you criticise her yet can't spell her name @Yeahyeahno

FiddleLeaf · 01/07/2023 12:24

We said the same in our house when the saw the ad. With her eye sight issues I don’t think she’s working that much but enjoys the job and I imagine it pays well.

PoppyFleur · 01/07/2023 12:26

Incredibly lucrative work for very few days and the actors are treated like royalty on set. The number of A list actors that do adverts for the Asian market is staggering.

Nesbi · 01/07/2023 12:27

Fuck me it’s like stumbling into the AGM of the Judi Dench Fan Club!

it’s a very shit ad and my first thought when I saw it was “Christ, she’s lowered her standards!” - so I think it is a legitimate thing to ponder on a discussion forum.

Amazed it has got so many knickers in a twist!

Isabel Allende

Is that a comedy name?

"Is a bell end" surely?

readbooksdrinktea · 01/07/2023 12:28

Whataretheodds · 01/07/2023 11:43

Maybe she thought she needed to be higher profile so people who started posts about her would learn how to spell her name.

Accurate 😂

She's a famous author https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabel_Allende

LobeliaSackville · 01/07/2023 12:31

Wow OP, you clearly hit a nerve with this! 🤣

I always wonder the same thing when I see actors George Clooney and Kevin Bacon doing adverts. The Owen Wilson Sofology advert felt random as well. It's like people never feel like they have enough money, and even multimillionaires won't pass up the opportunity to get a bit more. The goes for all sorts of rich folk though, not just actors. Jrs just never enough for them. They have more than they'll ever spend, and just want more and more like a dragon hoarding it's gold. Whereas I'd be thrilled to retire and live a life of leisure even I had big bucks like that!

Katy Perry is an interesting case, though. She really dropped off in popularity over the past decade or so and the Just Eat advert made her relevant again (although it made her look a bit desperate).

Seasidemumma77 · 01/07/2023 11:48

Louis Theroux interviewed her, i'm sure she talked about why she does adverts and how her eye sight is going making it hard to learn scripts.

But yeah, in seriousness, we probably and unfortunately won't see her on stage and screen much anymore.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 01/07/2023 12:31

I agree Op, I don't get it either. Sure, it's her choice, it might be fun...I still don't get it.

Denise82 · 01/07/2023 12:31

She does it for the money like they all do. Michael Cain famously replied to someone asking about his role in Jaws : The revenge, "I have never seen the film, by all accounts it was terrible. However I have seen the house it built, and it is terrific" 🤣 I like the honesty

Simplestead · 01/07/2023 12:27

Ah, no. She's an author.

WandaWonder · 01/07/2023 12:33

Because she was in the loo when they handed out the questionnaire to be completed of what you are allowed to do if only cleared by a committee of people who don't know her?

ImAOneWayMotorway · 01/07/2023 12:33

Maybe she's mates with the owner of said company? Celebs do shit stuff from time to time to help mates out 🤷‍♀️. Maybe she just wanted to for something to do, I don't really get why you are so bothered?

BarelyLiterate · 01/07/2023 12:34

There is only one reason why A list celebrities do crappy adverts. Because the corporates make them offers they can’t refuse. When they are being offered stupid amounts of money for a couple of days work, it would be daft to turn it down.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2023 12:35

Qilin · 01/07/2023 11:42

I suspect like many people giving up work is harder than it sounds when you're younger. It gets you out of the house, meeting people, often doing something you quite like doing and with people you quite like being with. I also think if people have worked a lot before and been successful it can be even harder to stop doing it, especially coming after a good period of time when they weren't able to (covid.)

I think you have hit the nail on the head.
I can retire next year. Do I want to? No.

SweetSakura · 01/07/2023 12:36

Ahh, I can't imagine many people would turn down a tonne of money for an easy day's work.
