So, the sub was destroyed before the story even broke? Is that correct?

Cheesecake53 · 22/06/2023 21:35

Yes, that is my understanding of the situation.

Callipsi · 22/06/2023 21:35

Yes. Less than 2 hours in. It never got to titanic.

the only good thing about any of this is they won’t have known anything about it. Dead before anything could register. Awful for their families, and no bodies left to have a funeral. A massive massive tragedy.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 22/06/2023 21:36

Saw on a news site one of the people who was on board had written a post about how the weather had been so bad but luckily there was a chance they could go as a opportunity had opened up..though would likely be the first and only in 2023 to do so..

Unfortunately right just not because of that reason.

They’re saying that because they haven’t picked up any sounds that could be an implosion it must have happened before the search began

What an awful loss to their families

SmartHome · 22/06/2023 21:39

And the people won't have known anything about it mercifully as sudden explosive decompression at those depths and concurrent enormous pressure differential between inside the chamber where they were and the outside means that they would have been pretty much immediately vaporised in the implosion that will have happened when the chamber was 'popped' and pressure equalisation (implosion) happened. There are no bodies to be retrieved and I hope the authorities are doing a better job of communicating that to the families than Sky News etc are ... Talking about retrieving bodies just shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the principles of physics.

That sounds likely.
Poor souls.

My uncle is a marine engineer and worked on the Titanic years ago. He said when the news broke that based on his many years experience he thought it had imploded early on and it would have been very quick for all on board.

ProseccoOnTap · 22/06/2023 21:40

Awful news.

The only console would be that it would have been a very swift passing for them & they would not have been aware.

I hope there is some kind of enquiry & lessons are learned - the safety aspects of this situation have been shockingly poor.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/06/2023 21:41

I hope the families take some solace in the fact it would have happened so quickly instead of waiting around for hours / days in stark discomfort / the dark waiting for death to happen

Motorina · 22/06/2023 21:41

Video showing glass bottles being crushed underwater:

It does show clearly what happens in an implosion. Appreciate some people may find this distressing, hence I've deleted the preview, but it does answer some of the questions that have come up.

On the titanic? That would make him very old indeed.

Ponderingwindow · 22/06/2023 21:42

might I ask why your heart is broken for these men? I don’t relish anyone’s death, but they chose to engage in an extremely risky activity and this was the natural consequence. Does your heart also break for the people who die on Everest or during other “extreme” high risk tourism? It is sad, but I wouldn’t rank it worse than the pain suffered by many other families today throughout the world whose loved ones died in much more ordinary ways.

our local radio station in the us had an expert on yesterday who talked about the sounds that metal makes as a vessel is imploding. A large vessel can take months to collapse. They said a smaller one might take days. The analogy used was an aluminum can being slowly crushed and breaking apart. You would hear the sound of the metal echo through the ocean with each shape change.

How could he have 'worked on the titanic'??? It sunk 111 years ago!!!

Hopefully this situation now gets people regulating this type of vehicle and procedure. Prevent anything else happening like this again

CovetedAsFuck · 22/06/2023 21:43

Relieved it's over and that there's some semblance of closure for the families. It'll be interesting to hear what comes out as the situation is investigated.

YesSirMam · 22/06/2023 21:43

why did this one implode? Other have been down & got back up safely - somewhat! Is it because this one was damaged & repaired creating a weakness?

SirChenjins · 22/06/2023 21:43

Trixiefirecracker · 22/06/2023 21:41

Obviously not on the Titanic. He’s old but not that old.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 21:45

I hope it didn't take days to implode and instead it was fast and painless for all involved. The alternative doesn't bare thinking about.
