My heart aches for those poor men and their families. 💔😔

Very sad for the families. No sympathy for the CEO who was on board. From what I've heard so far, it feels like a cut and dry case of criminal negligence. He was warned about the safety of the vessel and the fact they all signed a disclaimer meant that he knew it was dangerous.

Picoloangel · 22/06/2023 21:46

I’m sure others have raised this but I simply can’t get my head around taking a 19 year old on a mission such as this. Some of those on board were thrill seekers and explorers - I don’t mean that unkindly - but they sought out near to the edge experiences and would perhaps have appreciated the risk. I just can’t get my head around taking my child on something as dangerous as this. I don’t intend this to be judgemental etc I literally cannot comprehend it.

why did this one implode? Other have been down & got back up safely - somewhat! Is it because this one was damaged & repaired creating a weakness?

The pressure of previous visits to the titanic had taken its toll on the sub
There was an expert on one of the media channels saying that a vessel that was taken to 16,000ft on a different expedition for exploration purposes (not leisure) was never used again as the toll at that depth was too much and it would have been too risky to use it again

SirChenjins · 22/06/2023 21:47

He worked on a project on the wreck of the Titanic. Dear god!

Simplestead · 22/06/2023 21:47

Trixiefirecracker · 22/06/2023 21:41

On the titanic? That would make him very old indeed.

Why? I think he worked on the wreck

I mean... from everything I’ve seen about the construction of it, the question should be, how had it ever made a successful trip?

What makes me even more fearful is that the poor 19 year old is said to have been absolutely terrified ahead of the trip, and according to his aunt only went on it to accompany his father, who was titanic obsessed.

Yep. Hidden fatigue apparently.

Me too. That's the greatest tragedy here imo. Older men with too much money who have lived full lives already taking this enormous risk is one thing, but why would you take your 19 year old son? Baffles me.

I actually feel bad for Logitech/ PlayStation here. They're being slagged off for being basic, but their tech isn't designed for stuff like this!

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 21:52

Oh that's awful @tortoishelll

I wish I didn't know that.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 21:52

I couldn't ever imagine putting my life at the hands of a PlayStation controlled. That's absolutely terrifying.

“There are no bodies to be retrieved and I hope the authorities are doing a better job of communicating that to the families than Sky News etc are”

Sky did an interview with a guy who worked on the Kursk disaster straight after the coastguard conference and he made it clear there would be no bodies.

No, I thought she meant he worked on, as in he did research about it, and wrote papers about it. Not that he visited the actual wreck.

Picoloangel · 22/06/2023 21:53

@tortoishelll that does make it so much worse. I wasn’t aware of that. 😞

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 21:53

Can we share links to other forums here?

There's now a Reddit sub for discussing this: https://www.reddit.com/r/OceanGateTitan/?utmsource=share&utmmmedium=iosapp&utmmname=ioscss&utmcontent=1&utmm_term=1

Well sometimes the analogue joystick does go a bit squiffy and your character ends up running around in an endless circle or up against a wall 😬 but yeah if I were Logitech I wouldn't be too happy with being associated with it all.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 21:52

I wish I didn't know that.

I wish I hadn't read it, either. Truly heartbreaking. How different things may have been had the father agreed for him not to go along on the voyage. So terribly sad.

Glad it would have been quick. I did not do physics but I wouldn't have known that death would have been instant. I'm relieved for them.

mayorofcasterbridge · 22/06/2023 21:53

Men with more money than sense! It's a disgrace that a 19 year old was coerced to go down with them. I have a 19 year old and I cannot imagine for one minute having him do something so fucking risky!

mildlydispeptic · 22/06/2023 21:54

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 21:45

I hope it didn't take days to implode and instead it was fast and painless for all involved. The alternative doesn't bare thinking about.

At that depth, I think it would have been like getting hit by a giant truck going 500 mph. Very fast.

I’m no scientist which is why I asked this question but surely this is very basic stuff. A huge oversight or negligence. I’m shocked that it could be as simple as that. I’m guessing there is no MOT as such on these subs, no tests etc. such a lack of respect for the water & under estimating how powerful it is

I don’t know why this baffles people so much?? The US Navy literally use Xbox controllers!

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 21:55

The ocean is a terrifying place indeed. We as humans just don't belong there.
