'Visiting' the titanic wreck is a ghoulish activity. It's sad for those who love them but they obviously knew they were risking their lives.

SmartHome · 22/06/2023 21:56

Less that an hour ago the sky news reporter was talking about retrieving bodies.

mayorofcasterbridge · 22/06/2023 21:56

I'm probably more angry than anything - the expense and effort that has gone into attempting to save their sorry asses (bar the 19 year old) is ridiculous. I hope their estate is paying for all of that - them and their stupid vanity project!!

L13422 · 22/06/2023 21:57

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 21:47

What makes me even more fearful is that the poor 19 year old is said to have been absolutely terrified ahead of the trip, and according to his aunt only went on it to accompany his father, who was titanic obsessed.

That is just awful. Where did you read this?

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 21:51

I actually feel bad for Logitech/ PlayStation here. They're being slagged off for being basic, but their tech isn't designed for stuff like this!

I understood that such technology and joysticks are commonplace in submarines. It’s not a weird one-off just on the Titan.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 21:57

My son says perfection is the enemy of progress.

I think people working at the cutting edge can get a bit blasé about gut instinct, probably ok, good enough etc.

You really wouldn't make progress if you didn't take some unmeasurable risks.

But not with a 19yr old.

SmartHome · 22/06/2023 21:56

Less that an hour ago the sky news reporter was talking about retrieving bodies.

Then they were an idiot who hasn't understood what they have been reporting. The coastguard made it clear without spelling it out in detail.

Hugasauras · 22/06/2023 21:58

Sad news but thank Christ it was instant and they weren't slowly dying in that tiny vessel for days.

How many times had this particular sub been down at those depths?

I imagine it was an accident just waiting to happen.

So very sad to think the son was terrified, but felt he had to go along. He had his whole life ahead of him.

The controller wasn't why they died. None of this should be any reflection on Logitech. If they used a different controller, even the most sophisticated one in the world, it wouldn't have saved them.

WellPlaced · 22/06/2023 22:01

All of a sudden, debris and lots of info.

We’re fools if we think we weren’t fed the full story.

I’m so disgusted reading this! Absolutely heartbreaking. This will keep me awake tonight 💔 if I was his wife I can’t imagine how I’d feel, so angry at her husband but so broken. There are just no words

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 22:01

I just hope in the nicest way, that they wouldn't have had any idea of what was about to happen to them.

Hopefully, at the point of lost contact, they met their fate quickly and painlessly.

Yes, exactly.

I couldn't ever imagine putting my life at the hands of a PlayStation controlled. That's absolutely terrifying.

I don’t think the controller was the issue

What do you mean?

Feelingsickrightnow · 22/06/2023 22:03

It’s not fair to say that these people went there as they were billionaires so could afford it.
I read some horrible posts saying that they were bored and didn’t know what to do with their money etc.
I don’t agree with it..
If the actual Titanic was closer and for example not deep in the ocean in a remote area but parked outside our coast line or down the road, there would be thousands of people queuing and going to see it.
Only as it is far far away in the middle of ocean, ordinary people can’t not afford it so only few managed to go..but I bet if it was available to anybody and free there would be waiting lists long as possible..

PurposefulBear · 22/06/2023 22:03

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 22/06/2023 21:36

Saw on a news site one of the people who was on board had written a post about how the weather had been so bad but luckily there was a chance they could go as a opportunity had opened up..though would likely be the first and only in 2023 to do so..

Unfortunately right just not because of that reason.

Wasn’t that Hamish Harding, as in he was on board?

EarringsandLipstick · 22/06/2023 22:04

Does your heart also break for the people who die on Everest or during other “extreme” high risk tourism?

My heart doesn't 'break', no, as I don't know these people but I hade huge sympathy for them & their families. What kind of a cold-hearted person doesn't?

Also, like some of the individuals on Titan, explorers are needed & ddi a service to the world. It's not a life I'd choose, but the human condition is to venture forth & discover - in the water, on land, in space.

I've just finished listening to a podcast with Sir Ranulph Fiennes - he has certainly gone to extremes in his life. Would you dismiss his achievements so glibly?

His expeditions are sponsored by the kind of multi-millionaires that were abroad Titan, and a charity benefits from monies raised - he has raised nearly £20 million for charities in this way, via his backers.

The lack of understanding expressed here is astounding.

What project was that?

moonriverandme · 22/06/2023 22:06

It's awful about the young man. I also heard on Talk TV, a man being interviewed ,who said, he hadn't wanted to go & only went to accompany his dad who was a Titanic enthusiast. His poor mother.

Bouledeneige · 22/06/2023 22:06

Brutal explanation of the impact of an implosion on the human body. Don't read if you're squeamish.
