Terrible to hear that the young lad was terrified to go

All of a sudden, debris and lots of info.

We’re fools if we think we weren’t fed the full story.

Can you say what you mean rather than being cryptic?

Does your heart also break for the people who die on Everest or during other “extreme” high risk tourism?

My heart doesn't 'break', no, as I don't know these people but I hade huge sympathy for them & their families. What kind of a cold-hearted person doesn't?

Also, like some of the individuals on Titan, explorers are needed & ddi a service to the world. It's not a life I'd choose, but the human condition is to venture forth & discover - in the water, on land, in space.

I've just finished listening to a podcast with Sir Ranulph Fiennes - he has certainly gone to extremes in his life. Would you dismiss his achievements so glibly?

His expeditions are sponsored by the kind of multi-millionaires that were abroad Titan, and a charity benefits from monies raised - he has raised nearly £20 million for charities in this way, via his backers.

The lack of understanding expressed here is astounding.

Ranulf Fiennes was an expert. These were just people with more money than sense.

Dunnoburt · 22/06/2023 22:07

Everything has an element of LFE .....deep sea exploration is not advanced......they knew the risks.......they have helped like countless others have in other fields of exploration......trailblazers...thank you guys!

I just can't get that poor young boy out of my mind Sad

Thats not what everyone else has been saying about at least two of the men, they were both extremely experienced. Did you know them?

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/06/2023 22:10

PurposefulBear · 22/06/2023 22:03

Wasn’t that Hamish Harding, as in he was on board?

Yes it was.

Cosycover · 22/06/2023 22:10

EarringsandLipstick · 22/06/2023 22:05

What project was that?

Is this really the place for this shit?

AllOfThemWitches · 22/06/2023 22:10

Sorry, how do trips like this actually benefit anyone except the men who choose to go on them?

EarringsandLipstick · 22/06/2023 22:11

Ranulf Fiennes was an expert. These were just people with more money than sense.

Incorrect. 3 of the 5 were also experienced explorers with expertise in a variety of fields.

Don't worry about the facts tho, as you spew your judgment 🙁

I'd assume (correct me if I'm wrong here!) that they would also try and collect footage and data of the titanic to analyse and aid in our knowledge.

What further 'knowledge' do we need about the Titanic?

How did we fly? How did we build high? How did we build cars? Boats? Phones? Anything..... RESEARCH....RISK TAKERS....THRILLSEEKERS

Maybe take a break from the coverage & posting so.

It's desperately tragic, of course. Most people are sad for their families who knew them. But unless you did, you don't need to continuously think of the victims.

Yes, I watched the documentary on BBC iPlayer this morning of another expedition the Titan done (I believe perhaps in 2021) where they mapped the Titanic wreck and completed the first full 8k drawing of it.

Screwballs · 22/06/2023 22:14

mayorofcasterbridge · 22/06/2023 21:56

I'm probably more angry than anything - the expense and effort that has gone into attempting to save their sorry asses (bar the 19 year old) is ridiculous. I hope their estate is paying for all of that - them and their stupid vanity project!!

Really spiteful people in the world. I'm sure if it were your family, you'd do everything you could. Go have a glass of wine and look up the word empathy.

Me too, OP.

He worked on a project on the wreck of the Titanic. Dear god!

I got this first time out, so it's not you @SirChenjins

Not just the Titanic. I think it's the BBC documentary that featured a marine biologist and another scientist who were getting lots of useful information as they try to better understand marine life at that depth and its environmental impacts. The sub brought up samples of water from the deepest point that they were analysing.

Theunamedcat · 22/06/2023 22:14

AllOfThemWitches · 22/06/2023 22:12

What further 'knowledge' do we need about the Titanic?

What's eating it the rate of decomposition the response from the animals in the surrounding areas etc etc we need to learn about our own planet it might be useful someday

Dunnoburt · 22/06/2023 22:12

An unmanned rov could do exactly the same.
