Some films produced by Oceangate advertising trips on Titan released only 2 months ago. Sadly featuring Nargeolet who died last week. Slick and smooth and as we now know overstating the development and testing of the vessel with the University of Washington, NASA, and Boeing.

The documentary that's linked up thread is chilling in light of recent events.

Just watched it again, and it’s brought back so much of the course to me (which I took years ago). Focus on being honest in debriefings, not to indulge the blame culture to which clinicians may automatically revert, explore what happened and discuss how to make it a “never event” in future.

Well worth 14 minutes of anyone’s time, and what a great man to have turned the awful, avoidable death of his wife into a force for good.

This is heartbreaking - but what a wonderful man. He could have been consumed with bitterness, but he isn't - he just doesn't want anyone else's family to suffer as his did.

You should listen to Cautionary Tales by Tim Harford

Those kind of stories come up - human factors in accidents

Podcasts | Tim Harford

To lighten the mood slightly, here is someone practising how to tell the pilot there is an issue (Hey Chief)

I haven't listened to the podcasts yet - but Cabin Pressure is one of my favourites, and I now want to listen to them all again!

plantsandwich · 26/06/2023 23:31

@SharkSip She wanted to see it and decided she'd find it herself, put all measures in place to do so, learned someone had now found the wreck, changed her career to a more lucrative one in order to save money to go and see it-and obviously kept researching and looking to see ways to facilitate that. She was intense but she had a desire and built her life around it. She seemed genuine to me.

I had similar feelings to you, regarding the documentary @SirQuintusAureliusMaximus . I do understand the desire a little more now, especially.

Mistressofnone · 27/06/2023 00:05

The documentary was chilling indeed. I noticed one of the men navigating was quite snippy with Renata when she was just showing interest.

In another clip of Rush giving a tour of the sub, think it's on YouTube, he mentioned they carry a lot of spare Logik/PS4 controllers on board. Wonder if that was a new protocol enforced since the issues in the BBC doc (where they no longer knew which button was synced to which direction).

xogossipgirlxo · 26/06/2023 10:13

No idea. What I find bit disgusting is that someone tried to milk the story (aka his aunt). Why did she even say this? Mum knew better how he felt about this trip I suppose.

I mentioned that earlier in one of the threads. I had wondered if this was direct knowledge or one of those, "I need my 5 minutes" so I'll blather on and people will listen.

I'm glad Mom came out with the truth as it needed to be said, since everyone was imagining the son being scared from the get-go.

This one woman is saying that it's a "thing" for people to decorate polysterene cups and tie them on to the sub because they compress under pressure and become tiny so you ahve a tiny souvenir to give to people.

I have a few of those. It's a great way to demonstrate the pressure.

I admit I am not very "up" on all of this, but the cup part fasinates me. Is there a place where I can see a before & after picture of a cup that compressed?

I was just talking to my father about Titan and how differently people evaluate risk and this moved on to balloon rides. My Dad was on holiday with his BIL in Eqypt and the BIL wanted to go on a balloon ride. My Dad refused as it was too risky in his opinion but the BIL went (and enjoyed it). A few months later the same balloon crashed and people died

It is interesting - I wonder how many successful dives would count as being "safe enough" to justify going on the dive - bearing in mind failure could mean instant death and there were lots of ways to fail.

There was the Comet plane - it did many many flights but then several crashed. Due to the square windows instead of round windows - which caused stress on the frame and the window. I guess those passengers assumed it had been through testing and had had many successful flights.

Risk evaluation, knowledge and trust in the system - and a though that it wouldn't happen to you.

I have flown in Nepal to some of the small airstrips - I think that the airlines have an appalling safety record but I was prepared to take the risk.

But how do people know the risk and do they have the information to understand the risk involved?

Do the airlines have an appalling safety record because the pilots are not competent, or the planes are not suitably maintained or because they are, as you said, landing on tiny strips of grass, in difficult flying conditions?

Qantas has a superb record, but as a pilot I met on a Qantas flight said, "99% of the time flights into Sydney have perfect conditions".

I've taught risk assessment as part of other courses and it is basically what is the actual risk if things go wrong ,multiplied by the chance of that happening.

So if you live in a three story property you probably open your upstairs windows in nice weather.

If you have small children you might have windows locked to only partially open.

If you are on a hospital ward with people with mental health issues, including suicide attempts the windows are either closed or there are bars.

@Nanaof1 no before pic, sorry and I think they should have put a ruler next to it.

Styrofoam cup taken to the RMS Titanic wreck site - Titanic Museum

This tiny styrofoam is actually a quarter of its original size. It was crushed by water pressure after it was carried outside of the Russian MIR submersible, to the Titanic wreck site in 2001. This piece of Titanic memorabilia is part of a collection o...

Thank you SO much! I saw a picture on the previous page too. I thought I had read every page but I guess I couldn't count well. blush

Another question: Who is the man who talked about Covid and having to get a pacemaker & defib put in? Was he in this fatal dive? (This pertains to the "Take Me To The Titanic")

Igneococcus · 27/06/2023 06:18

@Nanaof1 I don't have before or after pics but here are two of mine next to my Alvin mug. These were down only 2000 m, the smaller one twice and its about the size of a thimble.

@MavisMcMinty that video was amazing thank you so much. What an extraordinary man. What grace.

It's the only thing I've watched on this thread- I wouldn't cope with the doom of the engineering, titan ones. No way.

So thank you for that inspirational one!

One of the ex-navy commentators who was being consulted during the search said that the UK and US navy both used these, precisely because they were small, cheap, and easily stored safely, and spares could be carried for quick and easy replacement if necessary. (Otherwise they were left without a controller, had to return to dock and wait X time for an expensive (£00's) "proper" replacement to be fitted.

The whole point of these controllers (from a naval perspective) is that you could carry a spare and they took up next to no room.

Those tiny cups remind me of the craze that went round among kids for shrinking crisp packets in the oven.

Wow! Those are really interesting! I can see how much they compressed just by looking at your regular mug.
Thank you for sharing!

I watched the "Take me to the Titanic" and when they showed the cups, I assumed they were itty bitty little cups to start, like Dixie bathroom cups or espresso cups---DOH on me!

I'm in the US, so the BBC site or UK Prime did not work for me. I got it using this and then searching for the title.

Igneococcus · 27/06/2023 09:03

They are normal size @Nanaof1 like the ones you get at coffee machines in gas stations. One of the other scientists on my cruise brought cups that the classmates of her child had decorated and we lost that bag during the dive, so a bunch of us spend the evening decorating one for each of the kids. They all got one, just not the one they had made themselves.

Mistressofnone · 27/06/2023 09:32

@Emotionalsupportviper that's interesting to know, thanks! Sony should tap into the navy market more.

Those tiny cups remind me of the craze that went round among kids for shrinking crisp packets in the oven.

Yes! It was a craze back in the 70s and 80s when I was at school - is it still possible to do, or are crisp packets so plasticky that now they just melt in the oven?
