How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

If they release the "banging noises", then it might put the conspiracy theories to rest at least?

Or people could just not create conspiracy theories

Craftsandgardens · 22/06/2023 20:51

I don't usually identify with disaster stories, but this one had me thinking nearly all the time of those desperate people sitting in a cold metal box and wondering how long the oxygen would last.
Although the outcome is still tragic, a quick death is better than the agony of a slow death.

Gossip!

Noise was heard that needed to be investigated.

That turned into speculation and so on and before you know it...

As the late great Terry Pratchett said a lie can be half way round the world while the truth is still putting it's boots on.

“Catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber” - what does this mean in layman’s terms?

Think of a shower screen smashing. The frame remains intact, but the centre area disintegrates.

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 22/06/2023 20:49

And how was the debris found 1600 feet from the Titanic? Surely they descended closer to the wreck than that? Unless the implosion blew the debris that far?

I think the journey there takes about 3 hours. The full descent and ascent is 8 hours. and they think the implosion happened when they lost contact about 1 hour 45 mins into the journey.

So they hadn't reached the full depth the time it imploded.

Sorry I meant how was it so far away on the seabed, as I imagined their descent was pretty much right over the site of the wreck?

So around 450 metres from the Titanic? They would not want to descend right on top of the wreck and risk getting snagged. The graphics I've seen show them descending on a slope pattern like a plane coming in to land and they were not at full depth when contact was lost. It would be like an aircraft exploding part way into the final descent into an airport - the wreckage would mostly be found on the ground before the airport not at the airport.

I heard that the knocking was the cause of it exploding today after days of knocking there was a crack in fiber glass

I think the coast guard said if it imploded in the last 2 days their sound devices would have picked it up. So hopefully it was on the first day & there was no time to panic

You don’t understand how conspiracy theorists and conspiracy theories work do you?

Could someone please link to the Mexican’s video? Was it on one of the other threads?

RubyMurry22 · 22/06/2023 20:53

Very sad news but I’m so relieved to hear they didn’t suffer.

Igneococcus · 22/06/2023 20:54

The owner described {In the Mexican's video} how things would literally explode with dynamite like released energy.

I don't get that. How can it explode against the massive pressure that is outside? I always picture explosions as something that expands, I can't see that happening here.

The sub had no way of positioning itself as it descended so it could have been coming down some distance from the Titanic. At least one previous trip the sub had got lost and failed to find the Titanic at all. If it imploded before it got to the sea bed then the debris could have been moved by the force of the implosion or currents as it drifted down to the ocean floor.

beeonmybonnett · 22/06/2023 20:54

Very sad outcome. May they rest in peace and I hope their families find the strength to get through their grief.

I really hope the company don’t continue these tours around the titanic. Let this be the last one so that nothing like this ever happens again.

No. Just stop

Motorina · 22/06/2023 20:54

Currents would have caused the Titan to move sideways on it's descent, too. Some of the very early coverage said it got to roughly the right spot, and then the mothership guided it to the wreck.

Implodes rather than explodes. Imagine crushing an eggshell in your fist?

TallulahBetty · 22/06/2023 20:45

That's what I mean, where did that "fact" come from if not the official source?

CNN and rollling stone said something about the banging every half an hour. I believe the “for 3 minutes” is simply navy protocol that an interviewee explained

beeonmybonnett · 22/06/2023 20:56

I don’t know how realistic this is but I really hope their bodies can somehow be recovered and returned to their families so that they can be laid to rest.

The Coastguard didn't dispute that there were banging noises, But no-one was able to confirm for definite where they were coming from. The experts were divided. Most likely we will never know.

What absolute bollocks are you reading? Please don’t share nonsense like this that has absolutely nothing to back it up.

Catbeemouse · 22/06/2023 20:50

The coastguard categorically denied that. They said they had sonar buoys in the water on Monday that would have picked up an implosion and they registered nothing.

Sadly I think everyone was dead before they were even reported missing - right after contact was lost

oakleaffy · 22/06/2023 20:57

Alan's video has English subtitles for the first two videos.

The fourth video he gets to see Titanic.
