Yes we know they're billionaires
We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

As you were 😁

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

Also my other thought was if it happened in the column they weren't obviously at the seabed so the pressure wasn't so high so would the implosion have been as fast as if it was on the seabed?

Comms were lost 1h45 into a two hour descent, the pressures were plenty high enough.

Titan debris found.

RIP. They died quickly which was the best way. Now the families can start to heal.

Desperately sad for all concerned.

However..A fast death would be 'Preferable' for most people over a prolonged days of suffering.

Rest in Peace.

The Oceans are unforgiving, especially when doing risky endeavours like this.

My hope for those 5 souls is that they all knew the risks involved in this expedition and were willing to take them in the name of adventure and passion for exploration, and that their deaths were quick. I also hope this brings some small comfort to their families, especially the mother of the young boy.

The best outcome now would be that their lives are not in vain and this catastrophe is used to underpin new research methods that allow humans to explore the oceans safely and respectfully.

Thank you to all the intelligent people who have contributed to this thread, I have learnt so much.

My thoughts precisely. Thank you to the knowledgeable among you for sharing that knowledge. It's been a learning curve albeit a very sad one.

The Titanic never reached New York
The Titan never reached the Titanic

Both because of safety issues that should have been paramount in such an inhospitable environment.

Very sad.

Chilling. Just chilling.

MeinKraft · 22/06/2023 20:37

Awfully sad news but as others have pointed out, much better than the alternative at this point. The press briefing made it very clear that the sub would have imploded days ago, I thought. No need for people to worry about the crew suffering for days before dying. It's a fitting death for some of the men onboard, explorers til their last - but tragic for the young man.

porridgeisbae · 22/06/2023 20:38

Sadly, it WAS imaginable. They knew of the risk and took it anyway. Totally self-indulgent folly.

@TallulahBetty I admire the Hamish bloke as apparently he did all sorts of things like that. His wife would've known he was into that (still sad for his family though.)

But I don't think we can necessarily say the 19 year old knew the risks. Imagine most people's perception of risk at 19 years old. Apparently it was arranged as a Father's Day treat for his dad. Sad

My first thought in reading the outcome was relief. The idea of being trapped and suffering would have been so deeply traumatic for families and haunted them forever. If it were my own family I would be grateful that it was instant and they probably never knew. The chance of recovery wasn’t likely, and the alternative was stomach churningly horrific with suffering
I hope it has given some peace to their families in that it’s not the worst case outcome. Hopefully the media gives them space to grieve in peace. My thoughts are with them

My feeling was relief too. The thought of them trapped in there for so long was unbearable. Hopefully it is of some comfort to the families.

TakeMyStrongHand · 22/06/2023 20:38

Such sad news but I'll be honest, I spent the whole conference wondering if they are lying because they got there too late (possibly from looking in the wrong place where the banging was) and it would be too heartbreaking to tell the family that they were alive for all that time. And I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist. Honest.

Fightyouforthatpie · 22/06/2023 20:38

Thanks for explaining that. So the wreckage of the hull does probably exist as one crushed lump, it’s just a question of finding it?
No it has broken into multiple pieces. The front and rear which were titanium, have been found.

Ok well I'm kind of glad about that then. Definitely quick and they probably would have been having a laugh or sharing stories and never known about it.

darkmodeon · 22/06/2023 20:39

Whats the banging then? Are they going to find the source of that or what?

What do you mean by the hull, the carbon fibre piece?

The titanium domes at the front and back are, I think, still dome shaped.

General sea sounds, I guess. I don’t think it was ever confirmed at a press conference that the banging was man made in pattern

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 20:40

“Catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber” - what does this mean in layman’s terms?

This is not likely

feel for the friends of the student at Strathclyde University
feel for all family and friends of the 5

pushnpull · 22/06/2023 20:41

Just awful news, somewhat tempered by the fact it would have happened in a flash and they wouldn't have known or suffered.

It's unbelievable really that the Titanic has claimed more victims.

EnthENd · 22/06/2023 20:41

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 20:32

I wondered if the sound of the implosion would still be travelling around the world? Of there's multiple devices around the world that pick it up could the time it happened be calculated?
Sorry if that's a stupid question

Not load enough. HUGE stuff like major earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and nuclear explosions can do that kind of thing though.

TallulahBetty · 22/06/2023 20:41

Where did the 3 mins of banging every 30 mins come from then? Just someone bullshitting and it snowballed from there?

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 20:42

Will the banging noises be released now?

There were certainly noises that were being investigated.

Again, it was never stated by any official that these were on the half hour etc

What good would that do?

oakleaffy · 22/06/2023 20:43

I watched one of the linked videos where the owner said the plexiglass domed window would crack and give a warning before shattering under pressure.

He didn't seem to be bothered at the thought.
