Yes we know they're billionaires
We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

As you were 😁

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

This is going to sound really silly but it makes me even more sad to think that they never got close enough to even see the Titanic before they died. So close but not close enough. I hope they had no idea of what was about to happen and it was over in an instant for them.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 20:27

US coastguard has confirmed all have died so, so heartbreaking.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:28

I don't think there's anything to discuss now.

It's as clear as can be, there won't be anything new for a while.

YoSof · 22/06/2023 20:28

The news we all knew was coming but still hoped against hope for a happy ending.

I am glad that it was quick, and that there was no suffering. May they rest in peace, thoughts with their families and the rescue workers that have worked tirelessly to find them.

It was, they had no chance of even realising they’re going to die.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:26

No @HyperionWarbonnet

It was over before there was any opportunity of banging on anything b

Nobody knows that at this stage. It's ALL speculation until a lot more stuff has been done.

Like with the Kursk, these investigators will make it their mission to get every last gram of debris up and a full investigation.

Marteenie · 22/06/2023 20:30

I'm glad the family have definite closure, rest in peace to them all and thoughts with the families.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 22/06/2023 20:30

My hope for those 5 souls is that they all knew the risks involved in this expedition and were willing to take them in the name of adventure and passion for exploration, and that their deaths were quick. I also hope this brings some small comfort to their families, especially the mother of the young boy.

The best outcome now would be that their lives are not in vain and this catastrophe is used to underpin new research methods that allow humans to explore the oceans safely and respectfully.

Thank you to all the intelligent people who have contributed to this thread, I have learnt so much.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:31

They pretty much spelled it out @HyperionWarbonnet

Weren't you listening

DarkDarkNight · 22/06/2023 20:31

This is so very sad. The smallest of comforts in that at least they weren’t still alive all this time and losing hope.

GwinCoch · 22/06/2023 20:31

That was an excellent press conference and the fact they said it would be the last one should mean that media speculation ends. You would hope so at least.

For anyone TL:DR… likely there was an implosion at the point of comms failure (when the submersible lost touch with the surface vessel) so they did not reach the Titanic. Implosion would have resulted in immediate death for all on board, no bodies to speak of, horrible news but much less horrific than surviving for days and running out of air. Five major pieces of debris found, consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber. Teams continue to investigate the area but will start be wound down within the next 24 hours. Agencies are working together to establish a more solid timeline from the information they have. But no further press conferences. The crew has perished.

notimagain · 22/06/2023 20:32

HyperionWarbonnet · 22/06/2023 20:23

I wondered this. Allegedly no testing between missions means that there may have been issues with integrity in the hull that no-one knew about. Banging on one part may have made it turn catastrophic.

Excuse my French but it increasing looks like the banging story, certainly the idea it was a distress message, was a load of bollocks.

It seems to have started with a story in Rolling stone who claimed they had seen an e-mail from Us officials a (?) Homeland, the rumour grew legs and off it ran.

And yes, I thought the press conference was well handled.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 20:32

I wondered if the sound of the implosion would still be travelling around the world? Of there's multiple devices around the world that pick it up could the time it happened be calculated?
Sorry if that's a stupid question

Bellagio40 · 22/06/2023 20:32

Very very sad

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:32

The debris was found pretty much immediately below the point where last contact was.

The implosion wasn't heard after the arrival of the rescuers.

It happened where they were last heard from, and before anyone started looking.

It's pretty clear.

StGuffersOfTheVillage · 22/06/2023 20:33

It is a sad ending.

Some small consolation maybe in the thought that one second they were all fine, son and dad were together, all expecting to shortly see the Titanic; the next second they were gone. With luck, no suffering, no panic, no pain.

Good summary for everyone TLDR!!

Read that if nothing else!

The correlation with the Titanic can't be lost on people.

Safety issues raised but ignored etc. History repeating itself.

The Titanic never reached New York
The Titan never reached the Titanic

Both because of safety issues that should have been paramount in such an inhospitable environment.

Very sad.

AmenAmin · 22/06/2023 20:34

My first thought in reading the outcome was relief. The idea of being trapped and suffering would have been so deeply traumatic for families and haunted them forever. If it were my own family I would be grateful that it was instant and they probably never knew. The chance of recovery wasn’t likely, and the alternative was stomach churningly horrific with suffering
I hope it has given some peace to their families in that it’s not the worst case outcome. Hopefully the media gives them space to grieve in peace. My thoughts are with them

Exactly. I was in the Falklands for the ARA San Juan, it was a really tough time because regardless of why it was there or past troubles, no one wanted to think of what it meant for the men onboard. Even now, the answers aren’t clear - that’s part obfuscation by the Argentine Government but the reality is that the fleet was poorly maintained… exactly like the Kursk in all honesty.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 20:35

Also my other thought was if it happened in the column they weren't obviously at the seabed so the pressure wasn't so high so would the implosion have been as fast as if it was on the seabed?

DigbyTheDigger · 22/06/2023 20:36

chupachucks · 22/06/2023 20:16

The physics are this I'm going to try keep it as polite in the circumstances as possible.

The pressure increases as you go below the ocean as the weight of the water above increases, this means that all gasses that are not pushing back with equal pressure are compressed. So every molecule or space for gas in every item/person/ship that does not have the equal force push back will be instantly squeezed with the same pressure force of the water above to the same amount.

So if you see Styrofoam / polystyrene cups being sent down they are compressed into tiny sizes as the gas within them is literally squeezed into non existence. So any solids like metal and glass that has no space for gas in its molecular make up will stay the same. But any matter that contains any gas will literally be squeezed into a solid or until the gasses have the same pressure as pressing down on them.

You will still find all the solid material, its a bit like having a full balloon compared to an empty one.

Thanks for explaining that. So the wreckage of the hull does probably exist as one crushed lump, it’s just a question of finding it?
