How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

Unfortunately, I have to agree. He's been all over the news for days (fair enough) but was sat there in the Sky news studio reading out messages he was receiving. It just felt grim, like he was rushing to be first to release this information. How does he know that all family had been informed before he declared it to the world?

During the search I used to switch off when he came back on. He looked fishy from day one and therefore was not surprised how he even started back stabbing his so called 'friends' the moment he was sure enough they were gone and won't ever see his running commentary of past days.

I can't believe David Mearns is leaking information about his friends to the news.

Was he the one interviewed yesterday on WATO and after being questioned on why he'd decided against going on the expedition (he had bought a ticket for it) gave a clumsy redirection that implied he has had some very deep and serious safety concerns about it for quite a while?

notimagain · 22/06/2023 19:31

BBC have said he's told them information from a private what's app group. I'm sorry but that's despicable. The only people briefing the press should be the coast guard at 8pm.

Dealing with the media when there are accidents resulting in fatalities is a nightmare.

I spent some of my formative year in a job where we had occasional fatalities, often high profile.

It was always a bloody battle for those in the organisation who needed to get to, inform and protect the Next of Kin before the *** journalists were on the spouses doorstep.

Snowy2022 · 22/06/2023 19:34

@DogInATent No, not him. The other one was more respectful and only said on LBC he didn't go because of some 'reasons' and wouldn't be pushed into admitting the reasons were to do with the safety concerns.

smooththecat · 22/06/2023 19:34

Probably been said already, but the back part of the sub (the fairing, the bit that says oceangate titan on it) is a cover and not part of the pressure hull. Imagine the pressure hull as a capsule shape. The tubular part is carbon fibre and the two ends are titanium hemispheres that would normally make up a sphere in this kind of vessel.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 22/06/2023 19:37

Who leaked what to the press? Sorry I missed that bit

chupachucks · 22/06/2023 19:39

knittingaddict · 22/06/2023 19:13

I think with those kind of pressures it would be collapsing in on itself rather than exploding. Pressures are enormous that far down.

That's exactly what would happen no explosion at all. If the hull suffered a catastrophic failure what would happen is the massive pressure under there (basically the entire weight of the ocean above) compresses every single bit of gas within milliseconds to a miniscule amount.

Meaning it implodes, only solids that contain no space for gas survive, so metals glass ect. The people inside would have not even realised what had happened.

RIP

That must be such an awful job to do and so much worse since the digital age when people can instantly share information (that's not for sharing).

I notice the co-founder has said earlier that an implosion would have happened four days ago. I don't understand how he can know this?

Thanks for the description provided re the hull.

HumphreysCorner · 22/06/2023 19:40

Are they still having a press release at 8pm now news has leaked out?

Isthisexpected · 22/06/2023 19:41

According to the BBC yes

Locutus2000 · 22/06/2023 19:42

I notice the co-founder has said earlier that an implosion would have happened four days ago. I don't understand how he can know this?

I think he's referring to the fact contact was lost 3/4 of the way down.

Efacsen · 22/06/2023 19:43

Surely all 4 families were informed of the 'debris field' and its likely significance by the US Coastguard before they tweeted the same information at 4.48pm

Mearns interview was about an hour after the tweet?

Would this likely mean there was something faulty with the sub then?

I hope it was on the way down and not today.

Yes they will. None of this is confirmed. We are likely to learn more. Just checking see if this has reached CNN. Ocean gate have just released a statement stating that they believe the people on board. have perished.

Isthisexpected · 22/06/2023 19:46

Trevor Hale, a spokesperson for the Explorers Club told The Independent that the message that the club’s president, Richard Garriot, sent to others in a group was misrepresented.

^ from the guardian.

But what's I'm getting at is, who does a private citizen think he is in briefing the press about his friends, using information gained from other friends in a private what's app group. If that was my 19 year old I'd feel violated and betrayed.

AcrossthePond55 · 22/06/2023 19:48

CNN just read a statement from Oceanquest confirming their belief of the loss of lives and expressing condolences to friends and family.

Marteenie · 22/06/2023 19:49

He has been talking to sky news the past few days, maybe it was a pre scheduled interview. He's just lost 2 of his friends and his interview was very emotional, I honestly doubt he wanted to be the one to break it for his own self interest. I don't think it's fair to judge someone so harshly on assumptions, if he really just wanted the spotlight I'm sure he could have made a much bigger announcement than during an interview on a free view news channel.

This may have been linked before- No subtitles in English, but still interesting.
A Mexican you tuber went down in 2022 in 'Titan'.

I posted it earlier, the first two parts are subtitled.

What news did he break?

What news did he break?

The information that the debris was deffo from the craft and the pieces found.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 19:54

Ah ok

WibblyWobblyLane · 22/06/2023 19:55

Would it have definitely been a fault or could it have happened from accidentally going deeper than anticipated?

loveyouradvice · 22/06/2023 19:57

where can we actually watch the coastguard's speech? at 8pm... On any of the UK channels???

I8toys · 22/06/2023 19:57
