How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

3 planes picked up the banging though

Every half hour.

We don't kmow when it imploded.

It might have beeb today because of the enormous pressure on it for soo long.

I'm wondering what the rational behind slow alerts to authority the moment it went lost have been.

From what I just read the area they were searching where the sounds were coming from was not by the titanic where as the debris is near the wreckage. They were different areas so I hope this means they haven’t been stuck down there for days before the implosion. I’m sure officials will know, even if it doesn’t come out today it will come out in the followings days or week

EnthENd · 22/06/2023 19:08

My guess is the "banging" was a faint noise in amongst all the other noises of the ocean, maybe even inaudible without using a computer to enhance the signal. The sort of thing that a listener might easily trick themselves into thinking is real.

Not a passive sonar expert though.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 19:08

Re the rationale - I’d think they’d want to avoid any bad publicity that might put potential customers off.

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 19:08

If the back of the sub is in one piece then surely there wasn't an implosion? It would be in bits if there was?

SunshinyDay1 · 22/06/2023 19:08

So much info is flying around but I thought it pinged back evry 15 mins... And it's when it didn't ping...

The rear cover isn't part of the pressure hull. It's a lightweight fairing to streamline and stabilise the sub. I can easily imagine it breaking off with minor damage if the hull did implode.

from what I’ve watched on YouTube an implosion is kind of like stamping on a tin rather than an explosion with lots and lots of tiny debris

not if the weakest parts of the sub were elsewhere, is it the case that it would all have been blown to smithereens or would the seams / weak points have gone first?

I agree, sounds like it was just one in a line of catastrophic and reckless failures. There are other employees of this company who were complicit in these circumventions around safety- hopefully they are held to account.

rabbithearted · 22/06/2023 19:12

Is it really "virtue signalling" on an basically anonymous forum? I thought the point was looking good to people

knittingaddict · 22/06/2023 19:13

I think with those kind of pressures it would be collapsing in on itself rather than exploding. Pressures are enormous that far down.

All of this information is in the last few pages of the thread. But the bit on the back is basically a cosmetic addition - a cover if you will. It would just fall off in an implosion situation.

I can't believe David Mearns is leaking information about his friends to the news.

placemats · 22/06/2023 19:19

It seems like it broke in two, the irony.

I would hope that all on board died instantly.

How can you leak publicly available material? I love how some posters think Sky News is the only source out there.

Lochjeda · 22/06/2023 19:20

All the hand wringing about David Mearns, considering he knows two on board. I'm sure he'll of heard from their families. They won't of shared info directly with him before the families. They have maybe asked him to be the spokesperson and its them passing the info to him.

I completely agree. The info he was getting from his mates should have been ‘off the record’. It was hard to watch.

I expect his head is all over the place to be fair, perhaps he didn't purposefully 'leak' it as much as agreed to an interview and wasn't sure if it had been publicly released yet. He might have done it purposefully for clout but with the amount of news outlets keen for the scoop I'm sure they would do what they could to get it.

It's utterly ridiculous. These guys were scientists and explorers. They would want people to learn from this.

It seems that it wasn't 'publicly available' until he said it.

BBC have said he's told them information from a private what's app group. I'm sorry but that's despicable. The only people briefing the press should be the coast guard at 8pm.

placemats · 22/06/2023 19:28

In such a high publicity operation, I would think that news breaking, because this was mainly kept going by the media, is going to be expected.

I was watching sky when it happened. He was right to break that news.

tigger2022 · 22/06/2023 19:29

I think he was reacting to it while he was live not fair to judge him in that situation
