How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

Might be on BBC news? It's on the website at least.

Eggyhair · 22/06/2023 19:58

Sky News has now reported a statement from Oceangate that the crew are dead. Not believed as @AcrossthePond55 stated, but definitively lost.

WibblyWobblyLane · 22/06/2023 19:55

Would it have definitely been a fault or could it have happened from accidentally going deeper than anticipated?

The pings stopped only 1 hour 45 mins into the journey not even deep enough to reach the Titanic so likely to have been a fault.

ArcaneWireless · 22/06/2023 19:59

Sky News.

everyone assembling.

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/06/2023 19:59

Five News just reading the OceanGate statement out now. They "believe all 5 men on board have been lost".

SheilaFentiman · 22/06/2023 20:00

Coastguard statement on sky news

OneFrenchEgg · 22/06/2023 20:01

Poor souls. I'm so sad for these and all those who've died and been lost at sea.

DigbyTheDigger · 22/06/2023 20:01

In an implosion where does all the material go?

topnoddy · 22/06/2023 20:02

The sub couldn't have done that , it can only go as far as the bottom of the ocean .

Who knows how long it was under that amount of water pressure before what ever happened happened

bluetongue · 22/06/2023 20:02

One report said that a catastrophic failure and instant death is the worst case scenario. I disagree. It would be much less awful than being stuck at the bottom of the ocean and slowly suffocating to death.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 20:03

Found 1600ft from the bow of the Titanic. That's pretty impressive they found it so quickly really.

Titan debris found.

RIP. They died quickly which was the best way. Now the families can start to heal.

They could have been sitting there for days though .

No one will ever know what happened and when it happened for sure

Totally agree

stayflufft · 22/06/2023 20:04

What an absolutely unimaginable thing to happen. How terrible for the families left behind. RIP.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 22/06/2023 20:04

My DH said days ago it was likely to be an implosion probably with the porthole blowing.

At least they didn't suffer, if this is the cause.

It's sad but definitely not unimaginable. Engineers know this can happen.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:05

5 pieces of debris.

The two ends of the pressure vessel and the tail.... fully mapping out what's down there...

TangBloodyFastic · 22/06/2023 20:06

Forgive my ignorance but what happens to the human body at those pressures? Is there any prospect of recovering the missing?

EnthENd · 22/06/2023 20:06

"Within the large debris field we found the front end bell of the pressure hull."

That confirms it, collapse of the pressure hull and certain loss of everyone on board.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:06

Prospects for recovery of remains...

Inhospitable environment
Catastrophic event
No newer for prospects of recovery

We can all hope it happened on the way down. What if it happened after being sat on the sea floor for days, stuck with no power? Doesn't bear thinking about

BarelyLiterate · 22/06/2023 20:07

So it was a catastrophic structural failure of the vessel. They would have been killed instantly. That’s unbelievably awful, but probably better than sitting on the bottom of the ocean for days knowing their was no hope of rescue and waiting to die of asphyxia.
Condolences to their families.

JellyDrops · 22/06/2023 20:07

How can it implode and yet the debris be described as though its whole parts??

porridgeisbae · 22/06/2023 20:07

They could have been sitting there for days though

@topnoddy If the thing malfunctioned then it's likely via occam's razor that there was only one thing that happened, rather than two.

An implosion would've happened in less than a second.
